  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Drive!!!

Thanks, have a good shoot

Can you record 2k and 4k to a drive or is it like the CF cards where you choose one project setting and then you are stuck for that drive until you reformat?

Hi Shawn

We got our drive yesterday. I tried to work with different framerates
but had to format the disk every time I changed the speed. I had a single camera crash when I tried to play some of the footage, but after a reboot
it worked nice. It seems like you have to wait a little longer when you playback the footage, compared to the flashcard. Especially if you skip around with the files.

Question or thought... If you have a Raid 0 like the Red Drive, it should be able to do a linear write at up to about 80MB/s. If I am correct and 24P at 4K red code raw is 28MB/s even and the rate increase per frame or decrease is linear then 60P at 4K red code raw should be about 70MB/s even. So if the drive can write that fast, which it should and then some(I am pretty sure about 80MB/s should be do-able for the drive in raid 0), is it logical to assume that the question is can RED ONE itself process 60P 4K into RedCode Raw. If it can it should have no trouble writing it to the Red Drive based upon the Raid 0. Right now we can do 30P which should be about 35MB/s even.

What do you guys think?

They are laptop drives, which I am sure can't do a sustained 40MB/s each, especially not if you are near the end of the drive. RED chose to make it a RAID in order to keep up with the data rate for 30p @ 4k.

The RED ONE electronics can only do 30P @ 4k in RedCode RAW as has been stated before.

richcam1, thanks for the knock tests :)

Any chance of a photo showing the drive with the cables and plugs that come with it?

Cheers!

Paul

The drives are powered by the single cable on the camera. It feeds all data and power.

They come with an external power supply for unloading onto a computer.

The camera with drive draws 5.3 amps when recording (with LCD on) .

Do not open

Do not open

I love how when you receive the drive it says Do not open except at approved field force protective works station!

And then we are supposed to go shoot in all kinds of conditions!

Re audio tests and Red Fan Noise

Re audio tests and Red Fan Noise

I have a full location audio setup so testing isn't an issue. I will run a whole series of tests this weekend with a variety of mics, mixers and setups. However in doing audio for a number of years there are a number of factors to consider.

Although ENG folks for obvious reasons like to slap mics directly onto their cameras and in particular short shotguns, using a shotgun like a 416 indoors is fraught with its own issues. Also HVAC systems in buildings where the controls are not locally accessable present their own issues. A mic such as an MKH050 boomed is going to be a better choice as its pattern and drop off distance make it easier to deal with an HVAC or the "Red Fan" issue you are looking for. Using a decent mixer with low cut/high pass and then a bit of post can pretty much elminate all but the worst offenders. I'm not a big fan of wireless lavs. Although because of coverage issues they are often necessary the omni style pickup is going to be a lot more sensitive to all the surroundings even when placed under clothing.

Choice of locations and booming technique really play a significant role.

Richcam1:

Enjoy the drives! I've been beta testing the RED Drive since early December, with solid results...no problems whatsoever. I'm also stoked with the 4k/29.97 recording to the drive because I shoot a lot of longform television programming, a lot of it with high motion subjects. 23.98 doesn't cut it for that. 29.97 smoothes out the motion, plus 29.97 converts easily to 59.94 for broadcast purposes. As expected, record times of 4k/29.97 to the drive are slightly less than 4k/23.98, but the bottom line is that longform recording on RED One is seriously enabled by the use of the RED Drive. I still use the CF cards for more lightweight configurations, in-water, aerial, and hyper mobile camera shake shooting. Having the option of both the drive and CF really opens up a lot of possibilities with RED One.

This weekend I'll be test shooting with RED 8X using a Sennheiser ME66 short shotgun on a Rode shockmount, mounted on a red cage piece on the right front of the camera. The shotgun extends out past the camera and lens, and is very directional. I don't anticipate problems picking up camera and lens noise using this setup to gather ambient audio...we'll see.

Looking forward to that Gibby. Please keep us posted. Cheers....btw what's the red shockmount?

?!

Is this another new component you're testing for Red, Gibby?

Cheers,

Paul

Sorry...my bad, its a Rode shockmount, but I typed RED instead of Rode. I corrected the original post.

I would love to see pics of your mic setup when you load it up Steve. =)

Absolutely...I'll configure RED 8X this weekend, with the audio setup as described and post some pics of it on the audio forum here on RED User. I'll also post configuration pics of the EFP (on EFP/ENG forum) and long lens sports/nature configurations (on Lens test forum) I use this weekend (see below)

Configurations I'll be shooting with this weekend, some of which I've already been testing for a few months now:

Full EFP/ENG B4 2/3" 2k configuration: Fujinon HA22x7.3 and HA13x4.5 HD EFP/ENG zooms, RED B4 adaptor, RS232/12v bus to Fujinon converter cable to power zoom servos and on-lens record button, RED EVF, RED Drive, camera mounted Sennheiser ME66 shotgun.

Long zoom 4k sports & nature configuration: Canon 150-600mm zoom with Century PL mount conversion, RED EVF, RED Drive, Miller Arrow 55 tripod, camera mounted Sennheiser ME66 shotgun

When I get a chance I'm having fun out here shooting different configurations of RED One, and in the process generating some kick-ass stock footage. :gun:
