I was about to post the bit about field of view before I saw that you just mentioned it. Interesting to note, however, that you're trumpeting the importance of getting that wide field of view from the camera (I agree), but you're downplaying the importance of resolution - which with these cameras go hand in hand. In other words, the mode with the widest field of view on a RED also contains the most resolution. So while you may not personally feel that 6K is necessary (I would disagree there, but we all have our opinions!), you have no choice but to shoot it if you want the field of view you're after.
If there was a downsampling mode in-camera (which many, many have asked for), the story would be different, but alas this is not the case at the current time.
High res acquisition is another matter. It has many post-related benefits which we all know (green screen, re-framing, etc.) and others which are rarely mentioned (such as more information for secondaries color selection for grading, and more information for anything that tracks pixel movement, or anything that warps or bends the image, such as lens correctors or even the Warp Stabilizer - these would reveal a lower resolution master, as pixels become stretched out). I'm all for high resolution acquisition. That said, 6K is overkill - beyond lenses, beyond any Acs ability to keep focus, just overkill in almost any real-life shot.
Also that said, if you up-rezzed 2K to 4K, at a normal seating distance, most members here would likely not be able to tell the difference between that and "true" 4K, let alone the audience. Thats' just a studied fact. So thinking about true 1:1 resolution for 4K mastering is obsessing about something that virtually no human viewer of your work will ever be able to see or differentiate as meaningful or relevant, unless they are in an Imax theater which has you sitting very close to the screen vs its size (and who many here shoot for Imax, and how often?).
Sure the meaningful wider field of view comes with the meaningless, data clogging extra of 6K, but I wish it didn't, and I wish I could record that same view downscaled to 5K (for some shots, like green screen) or 4K (most things) and 1080p (when I know the shot will just be used "straight" without much post work done.)
