I'm having some issues with the audio and my Epic-M, my firmware is V1.6.20. and I'm working on Redcine-X build 487.
When I connect a microphone in the jack input (I've tried with different one), on the screen audio is activate but levels are not working fine, just a green small modulation. I've played with the audio input menu but it's still not working...
Then back on Redcine-X, I don't have any sound...
Anyone experiencing this kind of issue?

Have you adjusted the levels? Are you sure the mic is not broken?

was it working before and just stopped? I had to send mine in for a fix - had levels jumping around randomly but no throughput, can't be fixed with firmware - talk to Deanan, he da man...

Yes David, I've adjusted the levels and I'm sure my mic is not broken, it's working fine with my Red One MX.
I'll check if someone has a solution, if not I will speak with the support service.

Received it two days ago and checked everything except the audio, I've just tried this afternoon and it's not working... We'll see, thanks for the advice.

I had trouble with several mics as well and could not figure out why. I am currently using an H4N mounted on a top handle and splitting the stereo output into the left and right EPIC-M input. That's the best solution for now and provides 4 channels mixed to two and simultaneous backup to SD card. That top handle shown is designed to hold a shotgun mic inside the handle with a special shock mount and that can be attached to the H4N via XLR and either mixed in with the stereo mic or directed to track 2. Can easily adjust output levels when required.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED INTERIM SOLUTION.

Thanks for this interim solution Michael!
I will try tomorrow, I just need to find a cable to split the output of my H4n, great idea you had!

There's no phantom power on that build if I remember correctly. Could that be your issue?

I've tried with self-powered mic too like the ones you can use with DSLR, Rode & co... and it wasn't working...

Radio Shack 1/8 inch stereo male to male plus a female 1/8 stereo to (2) split 1/8 male mono plugs. Label your left and right to be consistent.

Ah, ah, thanks for that! Unfortunately Michael, I live in France and we don't have Radio Shack! I need to find a professional audio shop around my place quickly!
Lucky you're in the US with Radio Shack, Home Depot, Circuit City, etc...
Anyway, have a great week-end Michael!

You want Markertek UK:

http://www.markertek.co.uk/

I use Markertek's U.S. division all the time for weird adapters and unusual connections and cables. The UK division will definitely ship to all of Europe, and they have a very large stock and fast shipping.

So, i'm using Abox to cheap Rhode mic that works fine on my RED---using phantom power...but CAN'T GET audio to show ANY levels on my Epic.....Anyone know the fix? i did see on Audio/Video tab under IN....all 4 channels show in gray OFF....i double tap and nothing--should i get them to show ON ?

How are you getting phantom power from camera to Mic - through the 3.5mm plugs? Someone more knowledgeable please help, but is this even possible? Wouldn't you need some sort of preamp or battery box?

Try a self-powered condenser mic like a Sennheiser ME64/K6. The K6 capsule has a battery power supply. If this works, there's your answer - no phantom power from the camera.

Alternatively, I remember when the Red One first came out and there was a buzz in the line when using phantom power on the mini XLR's. At that time I had cables made that pulled the audio in to one channel and received phantom power from another channel. Could we do the same here, send the audio in through the 3.5mm plugs and draw power from elsewhere?

Audio recording working fine here.

Rode mic into Sound Devices Mix Pre-D (for phantom power, mic pre and limiting). Don't forget you *will* need some sort of mic-pre, otherwise there is no juice to push the signal. As of writing this, phantom power is not yet enabled on Epic.

Out of Sound Devices box into A-Box adapter into Epic.

Go to Audio option in Epic, switch it from 'Off' to 'Unbalanced' and raise and lower the fader as you need.

Audio levels will show up on the bottom right of the LCD screen. Green, if there is audio bouncing around.

now that's a beastly little set-up!

Although I can see the convenience of this setup, as a sound guy I'm quite appalled. When you spend $58.000 dollars on a camera, the zoom H4n is not any where near able to capture audio good enough to match the Epics picture quality. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be an asshole here. I just think that sound deserves the same quality as pictures. :)

But then of course, if its just for reference/scratch sound then it's totally fine. Other than that, it's a very nice looking setup!
