  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED DRAGON Scores Highest DXOMark Score ever.

Sign me up!

And probably most of the high-end photographic community as well!

The FF 36x24mm was on the early roadmap. So I'm pretty sure it will be coming eventually.

For me Dragon sensor balanced color response is more important than anamorphic.

Dragon's 6144x3180px already consist size of Alexa Open Gate anamorphic at 3414 x 2198px and also 2880 x 2160, both of them ANA 4:3.

Dragon eats Alexa Open Gate anamorphic!!!

That means Dragon is widely scalable by shooting formats, frame rates, compression option, diverse lens mounts, small body size, wide range of accessories, etc...
 
Another vote for Leica FF format.

Same 6K horizontal resolution.

Beating out ALL of the best STILL cameras, and being able to shoot 24fps, and SLOW MOTION (or a never-ending super-high burst of flawless stills) is simply i-n-s-a-n-e. Pardon my French, but I am so fuck it, this is one sweet ass review to hold over people's heads and piss them off as much as they used to bug us with their scam-cries, FUD and straight up corporate lies.

BEST, as in better than all others!

May I suggest to all DPs who get push back on using Dragons on their shoots, please make a PDF of the test results and print it out. Keep it close to you and show all parties who question you.

Simple. And hopefully effective.

What's the point? Dragon is the only motion camera they have tested so far. You might aswel show them Dragon's specs

100% Disagree.

Because DPs will understand the significance based on the technical information. Color fidelity, skin tones, etc. has been perceived as "not good enough" for many DPs with Red One MX & Epic MX.

It's VERY important IMO to get folks to open their minds to the fact that Dragon is an entirely new sensor. It's not just "the RED sensor that does 6K". It's a new "film stock". 6K is just a huge bonus - if Dragon was only 3.8K UHD - I would still choose it ANY day over MX at 5K.

It needs to be evaluated from scratch by cinematographers and photographers.

Hopefully, information like this will help open a few closed minds. People should NOT be coming to conclusions and passing judgement on Dragon or ANY other camera just based on tests, examples and posts on REDUSER and CML. Not saying posts, tests and examples on REDUSER and CML are bad - the opposite in fact - they help educate. But the best way to filter out "marketing", "fanboys" and filter out "haters" - is to show some technical evaluations from camera agnostic sources.

Its rather incredible that there are haters or peoples not impressed with this technology? Are they new to the industry and have never shot anything digital that has come before the RED or Alexa camera.

This is called PROGRESS, not magic, things take time to develop and historically way longer then the evolution of the RED. If you can't get the images that you want out of an REDone Classic, or an EpicMx, you are obviously not very good at lighting or shooting.


They can borrow my timemachine and put a Pro35 adaptor on a Varicam and shoot some old school digital and then they may feel different. These cameras are pound for pound and penny for penny the best in history of digital cinema period. Yes, the Alexa is a great camera, but not for everything, and I rather invest the 100k I save by owning an Epic into my life instead paying people at Arri and Germany and owning something that the Assistant Camera community deems more user friendly in a world where ACs don't load film, they have huge beautiful monitors to work off of, incredible batteries, lightweight everything.

I just had to point out in a discussion on LinkedIn (That Matt Hayslett started) to a cinematographer that wasn't very impressed that this camera could do 90 frames pr second of high res stills, and that was the reason RED was tested and bot an Alexa, as he wasn't aware of the fact that the dragon could do this.
We still have some way to go with some people

I'm Matt Hayslett. Yeah, a lot of people are clueless...
 
Not to rain on the fanboy parade but I would take DXOMark scores with a grain of salt. I think the DXOMark grading system is somewhat arbitrary, some of their tests in the past have been flawed and I know a lot of photographers who agree. DXOMark could theoretically test a weird industrial sensor and it could score super high in DXOMark but would actually make for a terrible camera in reality. They also haven't tested any other cinema cameras. For all we know, the Blackmagic 4k or C500 could score higher in these tests (I highly doubt that though). Certainly, this test sheds some light on the incredible capabilities of the Dragon sensor and I'm personally very excited for my Dragon but I don't think anyone should think of these DXOMark tests as flawless evaluations to flaunt around town like we're #1.

And ultimately, producers care more about reliability, ease-of-use, post-workflow and skin tone quality than positive sensor evaluations especially when they can't compare them with any of the competition. For all they know the Alexa is still the better camera and they're likely to see these tests as just more Red fanboy hype. Sorry to be a party pooper, just keeping it real.
