Anyone see the Cooke/RED ad in this month's AC?

It says something like "Cooke Joins the Rebellion." :)

Yeah I saw that ad in AC, encouraging. Will Red ever run "traditional" marketing like this? Seems like Red's market presence could do with a healthy dose of pr. Although you've got to respect a company that puts out an innovative product and lets the consumers sort out the rest.

It's interesting to me that Leica lenses are considered super expensive in the still world with an average price of about $3000-4000 each. I wonder why Zeiss and Cooke think their cine lenses are worth double or triple that amount.

In two words.....breathing and Ramping. Cookes do not breathe and the zooms do not ramp. In the still world, this is not required. In motion, these are highly desired traits.

It's an old discussion and it seems in most industries if you want the last ten percent performance, the price is almost the double

A lot of still lenses don't breath - mostly the primes. But someone posted a Nikon zoom shot that didn't breath. Now ramping on the zooms? We'll have to see how many are good at that.

I think when it comes to resolution there will probably be a few still lenses that hang in there with the best of the Cine lenses. Maybe more than a few.

To me it comes down to how well this Birger electronic SLR mount works. If you can calibrate your follow focus and get repeatable, smooth moves it'll be impressive. They are even talking about adding breathing compensation at some point.
 
Another price factor is total number sold. The volume of still lenses sold has to be something like 100x or 1000x the volume of cine lenses. At Cooke's prices, maybe it is 10,000x.

Actually, there is a recently-discovered reason to make a red-specific lens, although I bet they haven't done it.

You certainly could put an integral IR filter (hot mirror) as a multilayer film deposited on one of your lens elements, if you wanted to. The downside would be somewhat increased backscatter & flare. Could be minimized though, with enough dielectric layers & tight process controls.

They could be low dispersion optimized for digital sensors. Actually, that's an edge all modern SLR lenses have over all the old cine lenses out there.
