  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Compact Primes?

My wish for the RPPs is for them to be lighter. Focus marks don't affect me either. The 18mm is heavier than the epic camera body. ;) what makes the Zeiss compact primes so popular despite the fact that they are inferior glass is their weight.... If RED can managed a light set of RPPs and make them affordable they will have have the ultimate set of lenses for a lot of people! :)
+1 The price for the RPP are very good. lighten em up and no contest. Everything is getting smaller and lighter these days. It can be done.

Yes, the aperture marks on both sides of the lenses don't match. You could set 2.8 on one side and the other will be at +/- 1/3 of a stop. Completely unacceptable. The focus marks are also completely inaccurate, both in actual focal distance and they vary on each side of the lens similarly to the aperture markings. Again, completely unacceptable for an cinema lens, no matter what the price is.

Marks on my RPP's (focus and aperture) match on both sides of the lenses - I have a set and they all match. Further to that the focus make are accurate, completely accurate.

Are you talking about the current crop of RPP's? or the earlier ones? Are you talking about lenses that you own? Lenses that you've rented and used? or lenses that you've heard someone talk about?

The false impression that focus/stop marks don't match on both sides comes from the gap between barrel mark and focus/stop mark. If you don't look straight on this will result in a false reading. This is easily fixed by extending that mark all the way to the barrel. I had that done plus additional marks added to my set by Duclos lenses and I couldn't be happier with my set. The lenses are top notch optically and are beautiful wide open.

I'm referring to rented lenses. I don't know when they were purchased or last collimated. When did you purchase yours? Are these issues that Red recently addressed and made changes to the lenses, so newer batches don't exhibit them?

Purchased in the last couple of months.

My RPPs are some of the first ones to ship out from RED. Nearly 3 years and counting.... I've thought about having Duclos do the markings like Florian talks about, but just haven't made the effort yet. I probably will when I do get around to sending them off for a good tuning. Haven't needed it yet and I've been able to handle all their upkeep myself. Really nice lenses. Oh and the 300mm RPP is just awesome. Some people don't like it's bokeh look, personally I think it's killer. One of my favorite lenses to shoot with!

Jeff, can you post a clip or still of something you're shot with the 300mm. Haven't seen anything decent using that lens yet. Curious about the bokeh look myself.

The compact Primes were designed for the Tiny version of the Scarlet 2/3... WAS.

As far as the RPP's they are indeed fantastic lenses, and they are accurate, just that in my strong opinion needed more Focus markings, as I do work in Cinema were a Focus puller needs accurate referencing,
and for this together with Matthew Duclos, we designed what we tough was the best markings for the RPP's given their Barrel design, I since then suggested that any one working in the professional environment were a focus puller needs the added markings, to do so, the cost is very well recuperated out of the first rental.

Yeah I also agreed Jeff, the 300mm is a great lens, LOVE it.

Luis, that from Shawn was a great little short, thanks for posting... ;)

I'm in the middle of shooting 4 T.V. Spots and so far about 70% of the shots are on the 300. I threw it up when the director asked for the 100 - She loved it and restructured a bunch of shots so we could use it more.

I don't own the footage, so I can't post - and I'm shooting on the directors camera ( Some Sony with a spinning lens adapter, don't ask) which is a less than ideal situation.

Luis, thank you for posting. Great short and it looks great. I'm convinced that renting the 300mm is a good choice for next month.

Lorenzo, just saw your request to me above. I can still round something up if you want, but Shawn's short is a great demo of the 300mm. Another example is "The Exploding Girl" an indie feature from 2009 that was shot mostly (even entirely) on the 300mm RPP. It's on Netflix instant in the USA, maybe elsewhere.

Jeff, thank you . That would be great if you did. I'm off to check out 'The Exploding Girl'. Funny, my searches didn't yield such good results. All I found were reviews of the lens.

Thanks again.

Ketch, hey there. Do you have a close up shot of your 30mm with new markings on it? Would be great to see.

Thanks

OK, will do. I'll round something up or shoot something new for you in the next few days, whichever turns out easier. I just cleared all my workspace the other day prepping for a new project. Ha! I'll just shoot something new, I'm tired of listening to the tape drives spin. :)

Yeah, Jeff. Go for it man. Exciting! I just saw 'The Exploding Girl'. Great use of the lens in that movie. Especially near the end when they're on the roof, sunset in the back and pigeons flying overhead. Beautiful scene.

Thanks again.

Sorry buddy, unfortunately I sold that set, under the wrong given assumption that the Metric lenses were needed once I moved back to Italy... :(

What I had taken pictures of posted here: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread...my-modest-collaboration-)&p=693107#post693107

Okay guys,

as it was discussed an an other thread I started while ago, my RPP set is done and back form Matthew Duclos, with hum
I collaborated to renew the RPP's with added Focus Markings, I loved the RPP's before but now love them even more ;)

Each lens was Mapped out to add Focus Markings, Engraved and Calibrated for Precision.

Turn around should be with in 7/10 Days, however as with every one else, it will depend on the work load
that Matt will be experiencing when you send your RPP's in.

The cost of this is $2,400 for the set of SIX from 18mm thru 100mm, so about $400 per lens.

Will be bringing the set over to Red Studios some time this week or next week so that Jarred can also take a good look in person,
but I'm sure that He will concur of the great job done here, and now al RPP owners have the option to have this done.
