  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Compact Primes?

They probably got axed when the interchangeable Scarlet got axed...

Though the upside is assuming they learnt something from that...the next set of RPPS will hopefully be smaller and lighter but once again the best bang for buck and great quality the current ones are

I hope your right Imran, the next set of lenses should not be "competing" with the low end (i.e. Canon still lenses or Zeiss Compact primes). What i'm hoping for in 2013 is a 1.2T with no breathing for around $10k (i.e. basically equivalent to a arri master prime but at half the price). As a "nice to have", I'd like the lenses to be designed for digital imaging, with three spatial low pass frequency settings - none, 5k, 4k.

I hope along with you. Put Scarlet and RPP naked on my Steadi Pilot yesterday for a laugh - and laughter turned to tears very quickly...

Sorry, couldn't attach the original pdf, it's 6mb. But it does mention the mini primes for Scarlet.

I doubt the mini-primes' image circle covered 4K/5K. When 3K went away, so did the mini-primes, I believe.

I doubt that RED is going to focus too many resources on further cine lens development - next stop will be electronic lenses and lenses which will cover the DRAGON. After they conquer delivery systems.

I wanted to get some Red primes but couldn’t accept the weight of them so I’m going with Zeiss CP.2’s. I need to be able to hand hold a rig as much as work off a tripod. The counter weights would get rediculouse. Bums me out. The price of them are so good and everything I hear about them is that they are almost to sharp. Crazy!
I’m curious as to why they are so heavy? Most primes from the top manufactures come in under 3lbs.

If you look at all the new glass / prime sets that came out recently they are all in the size / weight category of
the Red primes.

And what I gathered from test is that the Red Primes still beat them all. At the same or a lower price.

It seems to be very costly and complicated to make small lenses that are fast and hight quality. The only two that I know
of right now are the Cookes and the Ultraprimes...

So as thrilled as I would be to see a set of fast / compact Red Primes, I doubt it is going to happen anytime soon.

The focus markings I believe is what some people got re-done...first time I heard aperture ones...

edit:

If i were you I'd hold back till NAB to see what comes...since NAB is like April time isn't it? So you could shoot yourself in the foot if RED does release anything new in terms of lenses for next gen sensor or any other vendors do...

Just saying...might be worth the wait but never know,

Choice is always yours of course

I love my Zeiss Compact Primes, but they aren't even in the same ball park of a Arri Master Prime. Also I think there's more and more glass in that "still" yet cinema class like the CP .2 , but there's nothing affordable in the arri master prime arena. I have been surprised at the quality of the Scarlet, it's really more then I expected, my next move will be to the higher end glass which matches the Scarlets ability. I'd think a lot of people are like me, upgraded from vdslr or corporate setups, so they have the "basic" glass, but not the high end stuff. RED allows people to move up from shorts and corporate work to feature film, yet feature film glass is still a bit unattainable for us low budget guys that shoot over long time periods(where renting really doesn't work). My electric follow focus btw calibrates and marks length on the computer screen, so I'm not so fanatical on the markings on the lens.

Personally I'd love for Leica to do an entire Noctilux line from 19mm to 90mm - same great quality etc. and able to be used with the Leica M Mounts too on the EPIC and Scarlet

A line like that would be damn awesome...especially since its still glass but apparently performs as good as the arri's from the sounds of things...as far as it goes for me personally, I love my Noctilux on the EPIC but it sucks that its just the 50mm...so switching mounts up and down doesn't exactly make for much fun...apparently the Rs breathe quite a bit so still glass wise thats out...hence the noctilux line

Though I'd assume Arri have a set of Master Primes that they'd crank out for 6K sensors? Shame Leica-Cs won't cover it but I look forward to when the Leica-S glass goes Summilux (if ever) and that can be used on the EPIC line...

Still glass can be an option just theres pros and cons and I guess the design and the aperture you get with Master Primes is what you pay for...if someone managed to pull off on par quality, price around 30K maybe less AND same size but lighter or smaller and same weight I think you'd probably end up with some serious hole punch in the entire lens industry for cinema...
That however is a dream that probably will stay one

Mike, I didn't know about the inaccurate aperture and focus marks. Is this widely known? I've never heard anyone else complain about this.
Trying to make my purchase decision by early March.

The focus markings I believe is what some people got re-done...first time I heard aperture ones...

Yes, the aperture marks on both sides of the lenses don't match. You could set 2.8 on one side and the other will be at +/- 1/3 of a stop. Completely unacceptable. The focus marks are also completely inaccurate, both in actual focal distance and they vary on each side of the lens similarly to the aperture markings. Again, completely unacceptable for an cinema lens, no matter what the price is.

...And yet, my RPP's don't exhibit those issues. My marks match. Some people do feel that the focus marks are too sparse. And I do agree with that somewhat. Personally it doesn't affect the way I work, but some AC's really feel they need the extra marks on there. But I don't pull focus looking at a lens barrel anyway.

My wish for the RPPs is for them to be lighter. Focus marks don't affect me either. The 18mm is heavier than the epic camera body. ;) what makes the Zeiss compact primes so popular despite the fact that they are inferior glass is their weight.... If RED can managed a light set of RPPs and make them affordable they will have have the ultimate set of lenses for a lot of people! :)
