  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Color - A look at REDWideGamutRGB/Log3G10

I like to be excited about new camera releases and new image processing!

Graeme

I get that, but what you are doing pertains to every RED camera's footage dating back to the R-1. When your legacy footage becomes up-to-date, that just exceeds...

Just want to say how great this thread is, really appreciate it!

Phil you are brave to mix your mug in with the beautiful people. Great dedication.

Thanks to all!

I'm a very inexpensive image release :)

So Graeme's been cranking away further. Here's some comparisons between DRAGONcolor2/REDgamma4 and the latest REDWideGamutRGB/Log3G10 w/ a Transform LUT for Rec.709.

I'm back in LA now and can test this much more aggressively and have been. This new method is in a pretty good place at the moment. Looking forward to chewing through more Dragon and Helium files in particular, which should line up nicely with an upcoming shoot and camera test.

Overall I'm seeing:
- A thicker/denser look with a smoother highlight roll-off
- More three dimensionality to the images which is much more noticeable on larger screens
- Improved skin tones
- Richer more vibrant hues across the board. Especially in achieving purer blues
- Much better handling of out of gamut/edge of gamut hues, even the tricky stuff as seen in the hellish first image
- Subtle increases in shadow detail
- Slightly less noise in motion tests due to this method

There's going to be a whole lot of conversations in the near future about this process, but it's certainly an improvement from what I can see. It's very flexible in the grade as well.

Wow, that first one, Phill - it's back from "unusable" to "more than usable".

Tastefully dealing with out-of-gamut colours has been the #1 request.

Graeme

Phil - I can really see the extra three-dimensionality you mention on the images. I'm really seeing it on the painted skin faces for instance.

could somebody shed some light on this:

(a) is the official RED transform LUT pack already out, and if not what is the targeted release date ?

(b) any way to currently test this in latest NUKE ?

some have mentioned latest DVR already has the new SDK... I'm not sure if BMD already implemented the latest SDK or if peeps were manually replacing certain .dll files... I thought I read somewhere that this was the fastest way to update the SDK implementation to latest...

is this possible in NUKE as well ?

Wow Phil! you guys have just made my day with those images. Looks amazing! I've been dreaming of this for a while :)

Left - so far (DC2, RG4)

Right - something in Beta (RWG, Log3G10 base)

With the mixed light and color casts in the room.

what would happen if there was a slider in rcx between, say... dg2 & rwg?

obviously you could do such things in post, but... could get interesting

Patience. There's more coming shortly and this will become clearer. This thread more or less tracks the journey on the way to where this is going. For the time being feel free to explore usual workflows and experiment with REDWideGamutRGB/Log3G10.

Graeme has been working painstakingly hard to create something that makes everything look better in technical and subjective ways, but aesthetic and look-wise, this is coming along incredibly well.

This runs deep.

Yep. It's very much a new look.

No offense to whatever you're working on, but her skin isn't wherever that is.

Phil...

it is clear, this is a simple workflow.

The question is whether we can activate the new RED SDK in a NUKE installation manually ?

Foundry is very slow in updating the RED SDK... and I have a few shots in a project that suffer a lot from out-of-gamut errors, both in DC1 and DC2...

What are the .dll files that need to be copied over ? anybody know ?

None taken. That neither is a final version nor that shot can be a reference. Just some late night testing fun along the way.
Edited with more conservative saturation response and WB compensation.

:)

can't help you there, but you could go ahead and render out of rcx and bring in an image sequence for a few select shots

yeah, may have to reside to this... the shots have already VFX and then grade on it... VFX all in Nuke from .r3d (DC1/RLF) so I would just need to select the new scheme (RWG/Log3G10) and everything would be good to go if I can somehow activate the new SDK...

would avoid clogging up the HDDs further with unnecessary intermediate files...

if you've got all that applied i would stick with rlf and just go ahead and make the image sequence for now

Phil, I don't know if people realize how much work it is to run through all of these images, but I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time, and effort, to process and post all of these test images.
