  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Just do your homework. On any product. That's all.

OptiTek's Cube experience

OptiTek's Cube experience

Jacek beta tested an early Cube, using a Windows Atom based netbook without any h/w acceleration. Never got it working acceptably + we had to pull back his unit for other testers since we had limited units and hundreds of users waiting. Can't blame him for feeling it's not a great product, but don't think it a problem for most users either. We have hundreds of happy users by now, and willing to work with anyone that isn't.

Thanks Nicol!!!!

Thanks Nicol!!!!

Sorry about this I was trying not to offend anyone.
Nicol thanks a lot for stepping up-respect man!!!:thumbup1:

Maybe latency is more of a problem? Or could it be the video quality isn't very good?

There is a noticeable latency (4-5 frames now, down to 3-4 frames in the lab), and the video quality is no REDCode, but not bad either.

Don't take my word, ask Mark, Michael, or Deanan (or Josh, Sergei, etc etc.:-)

So how's performance on a MacBook pro?

I get a 5-7 frame delay. NO - it's not for pulling focus - but for client monitoring - it really gives you some very cool options.

Bottom line- even IF you are using a high-end wireless - zero frame delay system like BOXX - which is what we use on CBS show Blue Bloods - the fact that Cube can record H264 proxies without an operator - makes it a super exciting (IMO) tool - I only want to use BOXX and/or Teradek moving forward - and I own IDX, Modulus 5000s, etc. -

As I said this product looks great, but so far all talk has been RED ONE.. I am curious will this product have the same support for Epic? How will it differ from RED's planned H.264 unit.

#1: You can buy this product today.
#2: Hard to imagine the EPIC will have less meta-data in the RP188 stream than the RED one ...
#3: RED hasn't announced any detailed specs or a theoretical timeframe on their PROXY MODULE. I'm have every bit of faith it will be amazing - and obviously designed specifically for EPIC - but I can only assume it will come after EPICs ship (I guess you never know - but I think that is a safe guess). Teradek is a very inexpensive compared to other wireless systems - and it offers recording over NFS - I'm not aware of ANY other system that does that. YES - there is latency - but if you want ZERO latency - that will cost you $15,500 - and it's 5 times the size and weight.

If your clients want iPad dailies and are willing to pay a small price for the system, service - you can ROI Teradek(s) before RED ships their H.264 unit.

My 2 cents.

All good points Mark.. Couple more questions:

SD-HDI does not always embed timecode into it's stream. (So says convergient design) and even if it did, should I choose to JAM timecode I woudl be on time of day, and not record run. That said, how do you engage the unit to begin recording if not using record-run timecode?

Jay - timecode does not trigger recording - the RP188 of the RED ONE has a RECORD STATE FLAG that indicates if the camera is rolling or not.

You can JAM or not JAM - still works.

You can also manually trigger recording if you like - or are not using a RED ONE camera for some crazy reason ....

ok so there is a manual recording button.. Very nice. I gotta say this thing looks like a winner.

On the blog they are running some offer on proxy recording. However, i thougth this was already coming with the unit.

Is this thing a streaming unit AND a recording unit? Keep in mind I do not care about a delay (of 1 second or less) since this is for monitoring.

In a perfect world I would like this thing to serve as a monitor for clients WHILE we are recording, and then allow them to PLAYBACK the materiel once the shot has ended.

Is this possible? What what is needed in order accomplish this? Do I need this "option" that the cube people speak of?
