  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED bricks not showing voltage on EPIC?

Still having the same issue.. Was really bad today and we lost a shot because our AC didn't check the batter every 5 seconds.. :-(

Will try firmware down up tomorrow when I'm off this shoot.. Don't wanna mess with it yet.. Will keep u posted

Ok, I finally upgraded to 1.6.40 still not reading DC from RED battery plate. It will read volts from shore ac power and from side handle ok.

I used a IDX battery plate when we flew the EPIC on a Steadicam and we could read the DC volts from the IDX battery plate.

Not sure whats up, but its a real pain in the field. Need to know what is the next step to trouble shoot problem?

Thanks

I'm using the RED battery plate with the ET aluminum plate. Using only the magnet that's on the ET plate I didn't get any voltage feedback on the Epic. So I took the magnet from the RED plate and taped it just below (or above, I can't remember exactly) the ET magnet...and voila! Now it works fine...

Had a very weird experience with my voltage situation. Neither of my Red V-Lock plates worked, no voltage at all. Then one day on a shoot, my Epic camera played up, the fan went on full, froze and locked up and i had to crash it. Plugged in the power again and the voltage was there and has been ever since. Very strange.

...can you take some photos and show us
how you did it?
thanks.

Where is this magnet?

Inside the housing of the battery plate. IIRC correctly there is a rather heavy metal plate in there as well which I chose not to put back in due to weight. Methinks the magnet and the metal plate work together to read the voltage so I would suggest testing with both in place as a starting point.

Is anyone else still having this issue? I have the ET/IDX battery plate with RED Bricks and Broadcast4Batteries 150 watt bricks, but nothing shows up. I used an Epic-M back in August that showed the voltage for the B4B bricks with a RED plate, but the magnet couldn't have been the issue because those batteries are "dumb" bricks. I've tried switching the switch on the side of the plate and everything.

We're actively looking to this to figure out why it's not working for some people.
Don't have an answer yet...

I have the Element Technica backplate with the original Red battery plate and the 2B-to-1B adaptor. I can't get voltage readout with any combination of the original magnet and steel backing plate, or the ET backplate and neodymium magnet they've installed. Using RedBricks (153WHr versions) which show readout on the Red One no problem.

So my initial guess is that there's something up in the Epic's firmware or hardware that's not allowing the readout. DC indications work fine using the DSMC AC power adaptor.

Hope this helps, Deanan.

Cheers from Tokyo,

Paul :)

Where did you get 153 WH RED Bricks? All I've ever seen/used/owned are 140!

What's strange to me is that my other batteries, which are not RED and don't have any of the circuitry for the % readout worked fine on the last Epic-M I used. I would just downgrade to older firmware to see if that's the issue, but my camera shipped with 1.6.42 and you can't downgrade from that. It's not a huge issue as the camera should run at least 2 hours on one of those batteries and shutting it down is not a huge deal since it starts up in 8 seconds now.

I still have the issue, did downgrades, upgrades, etc.. Also tried 3 EPICs, 6-2b to 1b cables, 4- RED plates, still nada.. We tried about 10 different red bricks as well.. With REDMOTE on/off, side handle on/ off.. Nada..

Would love a fix Deanan, or some sort of upgrade to a plate that does work? It really is a huge issue..

Thank u..

Might also be worth noting that my Red battery plate is one of the early generation ones, shipped in February 2008. No idea if there were any process alterations since then, just mentioning it for completeness' sake.

Also, firmware 1.6.42 FWIW.

Cheers from Tokyo,

Paul :)

Just used a brand new quick plate with Epic #335 and I'm getting no voltage reading with bricks either. I do get it through power supply though. I guess it's still an ongoing problem.
