Red #88 For Sale - Portland, OR

Hi Jay,

It's the cannon mount that's not yet available. I believe the Nikon mount was available from day one

I'd think the cannon mount will take time to build, given the shock and vibration... (sorry, couldn't resist! :-)

Miss Nelson is that you? My third grade English teacher from 1972 , come back to check up on me?

Hi,

Thanks for the nice comment and 'vote' as I definitely want to start putting this camera in good use!

By the way, is this Jay up in New Jersey?

Norm

Sorry about you not keeping #88, but my vote is to get it into Norm's hands if you cant hold on. I was so hoping to work with Norm a long time ago, but it just never happened. Very talented. The freedom and quality of RED should be a good fit with Norm, IMHO.

Best,

J.

Sorry Norm, I think you're thinking of Jay Rodriguez (is that right?). This is Jason from Arizona. I think we talked some time ago about a project that I was going to be doing down in Arizona, but keeps getting delayed. That was some time ago, but I'm familiar with what you do, so that's where my comment came from. Hell, maybe I thought I talked to you, but never did. :) Man, I'm getting old.

Either way, your work is skilled and I can't wait to see you put your hands on a RED.

Best,

Jason

PS- You probably wont have trouble getting your hands on a RED in Vancouver, but if you don't get the camera, and I do, you're welcome to scoot down to AZ and use mine or I can come visit family in Seattle and bring my camera up your way.

Update:

It's clear from the interest I'm getting that people understandably want to move fast on this, and a deal can probably be made well within a week. There seems to be a large, large group interested in around MSRP, and a smaller but significant group willing to pay more.

Some want the opportunity to outbid any current offer I have, and I'm not opposed to doing this public auction-style over three days. But eBay just turns it into a highest bidder game and prevents me from taking reservation-number aspects into consideration. No one seems to give a crap about renting, which is disappointing since #88 would be seriously good karma for me (ok, my own opinion). So keep sending in the offers, and I'll contact you by email.

Greetings Dank...can number 88 be sent back to RED for the hardware upgrades or that something your leaving up to new owner? Thanks...hope all works out for you.

#88 will be in the batch that needs retrofitting, which Red is doing at no charge to current owners (even covering shipping). So at the most (work/cost-wise), you'd need to send it back to me first, and I'll be the agent to get it to Red. I'd ask that the buyer covers the shipping between me and the buyer.

I guess the issues are:

- Whether you could send it directly to Red - I'm not sure, but in my experience they've been pretty accommodating. And I suspect they'll either have it done on a receiver-paid account, or they'll send a pre-paid shipping label, which I'd send to the buyer. In both scenarios, you'd only be paying extra to have the camera shipped from me to you after it's fixed, and even that's only if they insist on shipping it back to my original address.

- How often do you expect hardware upgrades to occur where you need to send the camera in - The bulk of future changes will be firmware/Red Alert stuff, which is just software. So our bets are that the daughterboard/mount alterations are a one-time, uncommon adjustment.

About other hardware issues not related to the retrofitting, if Red requires the camera ship from/to my original address, I will certainly work with the buyer to have it sent to me/back to them.

Does anyone else actually have the Nikon mount? Since I haven't opened the box, I can't verify. I paid for it in full (rather than just putting 10% down), and it's on my invoice, so I assume it's in there. The smaller box is heavier and obviously has the camera. The larger one probably has all the accessories. I could open that to check the contents if people are concerned. Besides, I have two Red Buzzsaw buttons in there I'm keeping :)

Wait a sec, why can't you sell your Red free and clear and transfer the warranty? If I go buy a 2006 Ford Explorer, I get the remaining 3-4 years on the warranty.

Red needs to support a robust second market for these.

VERY INTERESTED IN THE CAMERA......
HOW CAN I GET A HOLD OF YOU....
CAN MY BROTHER COME BY AND LOOK AT IT... HE IS IN VANCOUVER.

I tend to agree. My guess is RED is trying to eliminate or reduce the loophole that allows you to essentially transfer your reservation (by waiting until it's converted into an actual sale). Not sure why that matters at this point and why they wouldn't just allow any owner to have access to the original warranty.

I agree, Shawn. <edit> thinkbug beat me to it. I'm sure RED has their reasons... I'm wondering if they'll change their policy at some point in the future.

They need to change their policy asap, or the second-hand market could collapse before it's even started. No second-owner warranties would inspire even more people to not take ownership and would drive rental rates even lower.

I can see it now, "Why should I pay $1250 a day when I can buy the whole thing used on ebay for 10% below retail???? I want it at $250 a day!"

" No second-owner warranties would inspire even more people to not take ownership "

why ? there is only a 6 month warranty (period) ...
RED does offer a 2nd buyer a 90 day warranty for X $$$ ..
anyway you look at it - it's a short warranty for original buyer and the new owner ....
i would think that #88 being new it would cost $500 ? to be re certified ...
from RED site under terms & conditions

"5c. Red Re-Certified Product Warranty – Product that is not possessed by the original Buyer may be sent to an Authorized Red Service Center for an evaluation fee of $500. Red will provide a quotation for the re-certification of the product to existing Red product specifications at time of repair. The Customer is responsible for all costs associated with such re-certification, such as troubleshooting, diagnosis, repair, test, calibration, and shipping costs. Upon completion of re-certification, customer may be offered a Red Re-Certified Product Warranty for an additional cost.

“Customer” is defined as an entity who obtained Red product by other means than directly from Red.

A Red Re-Certified Product Warranty is valid for a period of ninety (90) days for the camera and camera accessories after the warranty is accepted by the Customer. Red Re-Certified Product Warranty is not available for Digital Media and Batteries."

wow.... as of now, without knowing the other people who are interested, I would say that the camera should go to Norm Li, not sure what he offered you, but he is a genius.

By the end of a week or two, you may have quite a few people who are interested.

Oh yeah, I was thinking of Jay Rodriguez from NJ. I think I may have vaguely spoken with you through PMs a bit a while ago but it's so vague that I can't really remember! Has that project come any closer?

Thanks man, I'm super stoked on getting my hands on one asap.

Norm

Hi Norm,

I'm wondering why people keep voting for you. I'm #87, and am following it's two closest siblings- #86, and #88:)

Vladimir

I emailed DanK, initially I was interested... But then I thought to myself that I'll continue to hold out for my #1110.

Here's what makes me wait:

* The camera already needs to be shipped back to RED for the recall upgrade.

* Dan insists on keeping his Titanium R with the matching 88 serial number.

* Potential hassle with warranty issues, possibly involving shipping the camera twice to get it to and from RED.

* The camera won't include the new adjustable lens mount.

And the biggest reason of all...

* My #1110 is still a few months away and I don't NEED the camera now. There is a good possibility that there could be more physical upgrades to the camera before mine ships, meaning that it could have to take another trip back to RED.

Nothing against DanK, he was very prompt in responding to my emails and I wish him luck in selling this camera. I'd probably be a lot more interested if I didn't have #1110 due in Jan/Feb already.

I'm not sure why why many seem to be voting for Norm. Fine by me. :) Although, I think Vladimir has a legit interest in that he could have consecutive serial numbers.

Is selling a RedOne a democratic process lol???
