  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED 18-85 on Epic?

hey tonaci what kind of battery plate is that? really nice and solid way of mounting. Is it custom made? where did you get it?

Thanks Ketch! Now thats interesting about not using a lens support. Epic X has a Ti mount also, but the body that it bolts onto dosen't have the same structural strength as the M. I wonder if the torque transmitted from a lens of this mass, through the mount and to the camera body will be just too much to use it without support on the X.

I have the 18-85 and wouldn't use it on any camera without support, I don't think that Ketch is doing that either. The torque on the actual mount would be much greater than 10lbs.

Yes, I do recommend for every one to use proper support with any lens andy time is possible, BUT, I did and will continue to use the RPZ 18-85mm and other heavy long lenses with NO SUPPORT,
as I am super confident of the Titanium mount capacity to hold such weight for the short burst I'll be using it for, of course I also KNOW GLASS, so I know which glass is built good in off to sustain such burden
on its mount and which ones can't, believe me even at 10LB and by iota length, the RPZ 18-5mm CAN... ;)

But again always use caution and your head when using any Professional gear for each individual job, no piece of gear can or should be use the same for every Job or situation,
but the situation and job should demand what to use as accessory of your camera and or lenses... ;)

He he, a fabulous lens, even put the Titanium strength to the test with no support... But seriously, a Fantastic Lens, no vignetting good all the way, Such an insane lens on the EPIC!!

Balance, oh well, Epic 5lb, RPZ 18-85 10LB... ;)

Oh, Hey! I was there for that! We were at DC Camera with Erich Roland.

Just one question... Why! are RED lenses so damn big and heavy! . Is there a reason.

Well, for an 18-85 lens the Red is actually lighter (at 9.9lbs) than the Angeniux 17-80 (11lbs) and than the Fujinon 18-85, which is 15lbs.

While the Ti mount may hold up I can tell you that the lens mount won't. It will flex and throw off the back focus or if the pans are fast it will bend.
I've seen it happen many times. The lens support is mainly to support the lens as the name suggests - otherwise it would be called "camera mount support"
You must admit Ketch you do get carried away sometimes:thumbup1:

He he, yes you were Alex, and thanks again for the great hospitality you and your fox give me and Joseph during our Epic American Tour, much appreciated!!

Jacek,

if you read carefully what I wrote you will better understand, that not only it makes sense but also it is something that I have done and continue to do, and not afraid of suggesting other to do, when short periods are needed,
and there is absolutely no need to worry about neither the mount or the lens, this are both Build Solid, I have been using Canon's EF 300mm and 400mm lenses with no support on the 1D cameras, and trust me that the mount on the 18-85 and the Titanium mount on the EPIC are by far superior to the other combinations...

Having said that, I also repeatedly said that it is only for short periods, and that any professional or none should make good use of a Lens support, and in fact sold the crap out of your Lens support with top handle... ;)

So one more time, if there are short periods, then go ahed and use it, no need to worry about having to carry all the extra gear, mounting plate, Rods, and support system, it is okay not to use one, now if you have to leave the lens on there for hours at the time of course I'll put a support on it, or if you are starting to add MB's etc, but even with a RED PRO MB I would use it no problem for short periods with no support, for everything else I got your 18-85 Lens Support package with top handle Jacek, so don't worry, I will not bend neither the camera or the lens mount... ;)

If you got MYYYYY support that's all right then...:thumbup1:(kidding, kidding)
On a more serious note the back focus on the 18-85 will go haywire if you don't support it(I've seen it in projection)- just something to keep in mind...

Ha ha...

Jacek, you will see a soon to be released videos why I use it with no support, same as the 300mm, and the 70-200 with Canon mount,
when I shoot hand held I use the Epic side up, Portrait style while I hold the lens and focus or zoom at the same time.

Not an easy thing to do with a support, which any way will not be of any use, unless used with a modified bottom or top plate,
which actually becomes the side plate were the support system can be then attached to.

For this the R90 will be a most welcome addition to my equipment... ;)

Is this lens too big for run and gun or would the 17-50 plus RPP 85 be better?

Neither?

I think that the current Red cameras are the wrong choice for "run and gun" work.

The Red camera you want is the Red Scarlet, which of course isn't out yet.

However, of the available lenses I think the Red 17-50 is an acceptable choice.

Now that the Canon lens mount has been announced, I think that an Epic equipped with a 16-35 lens or a 17-50 EF-S (APS-C) lens would work well for run and gun work. My second lens choice would be a 70-200mm lens.
