Can someone who has tried it comment on wether the RED 18-85 vignettes on Epic.
How is the physical balance?

He he, a fabulous lens, even put the Titanium strength to the test with no support... But seriously, a Fantastic Lens, no vignetting good all the way, Such an insane lens on the EPIC!!

Balance, oh well, Epic 5lb, RPZ 18-85 10LB... ;)

Hey Ketch. Do you have any footage you shot using that lens? I really want to buy it for my Epic S, the only 2 things holding me back are that the close focus isn't that great, not really a problem, and I've never seen any footage shot on it that I know of. And obviously another problem is the fact that my Epic S isn't out yet. :P.

If you could post any links with footage of the lens that would be awesome!!

I've been wanting to get the 18-85, but I was told that it does vignette at the wide end, both at full-frame and 2:1. Actually, I think Jim posted that. Ketch, you tested FF and 2:1 at 18mm?

Adam, I'm pretty sure it was the RPZ 17-50 that vignettes. I wasn't aware of any issues with the 18-85; I just bought one!

Thanks Ketch! Now thats interesting about not using a lens support. Epic X has a Ti mount also, but the body that it bolts onto dosen't have the same structural strength as the M. I wonder if the torque transmitted from a lens of this mass, through the mount and to the camera body will be just too much to use it without support on the X.

Considering other Zoom options, where would you rank this lens?

Since I generally shoot near max aperture, how sharp is it wide open?

Here's where I got my information:

"I think I have some pretty good news. I've put both the RPZ 17-50 and RPZ 18-85 on my EPIC Tattoo and here are the results:

5K 2.4:1
No vignetting issues with either lens

5K 2:1
No issues with 17-50mm.
Very slight vignetting with 18-85mm at 18mm. Zoom to about 19mm and no issues.

5K FF
Slight vignetting with 17-50mm. Solution is to begin at 19mm.
Issue with 18-85mm at 18mm. Solution is to begin at about 22mm."

Thanks for retrieving that one Adam. Considering the big boy as a kit lens.

Shot only at 2.4:1 to match frame with highest speed obtainable only at 2.4:1, the lens is very sharp at all stops, even wide open, it holds it self incredibly well,
of course if stopped down there is a ever slight increase in performance, but not really that noticeable, so I just shoot it WO... ;)

Sorry no footage that I can show at this time, as it is part of NDA material, but I will pay some one happily to grab its images out of those shot with Master Primes, at same speed, he he good luck.
The RPZ 18-85 is that good, once you have done post on the images it will be extremely hard to pick one form the other, and we are talking of Zoom vs. Prime here!!

Can't believe its price is so low, but don't tell RED I said so he he.

NOTE: Such a large, long heavy lens, 10LB should not be used without proper support, I did so there cause I know that mount can handle it,
and I have an EPIC MN, with the EPIC X I'm not sure of the capacity and security of it, either way, only for very short periods would I
recommend to any one using such lens with no support.

Hey Tonaci! Do you have any footage you could post using the 18-85? Im really interested in seeing some.

Thanks again Ketch. I've gone ahead and ordered one!

Yeah it looks really badass on there. When I need to impress that client, I'll just whip out the the big bouy and point it at them.

Adam, I'm pretty sure it was the RPZ 17-50 that vignettes. I wasn't aware of any issues with the 18-85; I just bought one!

Mike

I have both and can say this is true on the 17-50mm. I will try out the 18-85 to double check in the next few days.

Thanks, looking forward to it.
