  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Real frame rates...

forget frame rates... power consumption is the only thing that really matters... RED one is an amazing camera system, more than I ever dreamed of owning... but it´s way too power hungry... if the new cameras continue to draw as much power as RED one does, they are anything but the future of filmmaking... they are high tec dinosaurs...

one lightweight battery powering the camera for a whole day, that would be the future...

Wow. What a visionary. Please send your CV to Red...
Please tell me you're not serious.

I am willing to pay more! If my whole FF35 Scarlet package is gonna set me back $25K or whatever, then I seriously don't mind spending a few Gs more for 3K @ 60fps. It's just vital to the type of stuff I shoot.

I am only making a humble request. I'm not complaining or asking for anything for free.

Tom, why are you wanting to buy a Scarlet? If slightly higher frame rates are vital, buy an Epic, or hang on to your Red One.

paintthetownred - are those graded or tweaked at all? Excellent pics!

Slow motion is all about detaching you from reality, making reality unreal. I know that's the ultimate aim in life for most geeks, but not the general public - they don't care.

Yes, please.

I would like that too with anamorphic, but I still want the Epic FF35, with a Scarlet FF35 that has 3K @60fps with anamorphic.

My questions for Red is, Does the Scarlet S35 and Epic X/Epic S35 can work together for the same look for two or more angle shots or stereoscopic?

Will the Scarlet FF35 and Epic FF35 work together also?

How much are frame rates? Just Kidding :clown2:

I think people are GROSSLY underestimating what it takes to get framerates like these from sensors of these sizes, AND have the supporting electronics that fit within the size/power/thermal envelope necessary.

That's an excellent point. Would the people asking for higher framerates be willing to tether the camera to Mac Pro sized brick to make it possible?

I would think that specialized applications could work outside the form factor of the basic camera. Just give us a high-bandwidth path from the sensor and some external box to figure it out.

Although I agree with Mitch's point about renting a high-speed-specific body like a Phantom to give you a whole other camera on set. Often the stuff we shoot in high speed requires time-consuming set ups. An additional body lets you leap-frog a bit and build the slow-mo shot while working on other shots in main unit.

Some of us are building a niche doing Red One 120FPS for sports. Something just a bit faster would be nice since most sports broadcast trucks can do 90FPS pretty easily.

if i get the scarlet does it come w/ 120 fps or can i upgrade it that high?:shiftyph34r:

This may have been mentioned many times, but I think the issue with frame rates is that the current Red One will overcrank--at the very least in 3k or 2k mode. While this is not the full sensor, it provided a nice middle ground option for those few times that you may need slo-mo.

With the 13th release of the Scarlet, I think some viewed the lack of over-cranking, even in a windowed mode, to be a deliberate "hobbling" to protect the other product lines. This may or may not have been an accurate, but the idea was that Red never seemed like a company that would intentionally hobble a camera to protect other product lines. It didn't seem to be in their DNA as a company.

With the Dec 3rd announcement, it appears that they either un-hobbled the camera or added some technology, but kept the same price point. Either way, I applaud the addition of the frame rates. Even though it's still a windowed option, it allows a filmmaker that may only need slo-mo very occasionally, to have the option.

I personally think the new Scarlet S35 is the b-all end-all camera for any indie filmmaker. It is the sweet spot in Red's line-up. The bigger sensor stuff is great, but the S35 is a very clear replacement for film. (without stirring up the old debate of film vs....)

Even if the S35 comes in at 15k fully shoot ready, it still blows away any new 35mm film camera. In my view, it's now game over. The only thing that could stand some benefit is the sensor sensitivity, although it may be better in the Scarlet's new sensor.

Camera technology may continue to evolve, but I think Red has achieved the dream for any serious indie filmmaker.

Chris, I think you have this backwards. On Nov 13th, FF35 Scarlet could overcrank 3K @ 60 fps (we assumed by cropping). On Dec 3rd, overcranking above 2K was REMOVED from the Scarlet specs. No reason has been given publicly.

Many of us are hoping 3K @ 60 fps will be restored to Scarlet FF35 and maybe S35.

Oh, maybe I have it a bit wrong. I was speaking of just the S35, which I think had no over-cranking options? Wasn't the price bump to the FF much higher then? Maybe that's why i wasn't really looking at the Scarlet FF?

To have overcranking on the S35 is really great, in my opinion. I'd consider the FF version now, since the price is not much different, but I wonder if the increase in resolution and range will translate to moving images, or is it mostly just for stills?

Resolution is the least of my worries, but two more stops wold be nice.

I'm slightly confused by the Scarlet frame rate specs. I'm really stoked about being able to get the ready to shoot model for $3,750 (altho I hope the £ vs $ improves!). But why is it that the 2/3" Mysetrium-X model can shoot 3K at 120fps, yet the S35 and FF35 are limited to 30fps? Is it just due to the type of REDCODE and different sensor used?
Really great announcement on Wednesday though Jim - the lowest spec Scarlet is now within my price-range, and as an amateur I really look forward to learning to shoot on it. Even if the content of what I shoot is shit, I really can't wait to get some great images!

Chris, I cannot remember for sure if S35 Scarlet had 3K@60fps overcranking on the Nov 13th announcement, but I know for sure that FF35 Scarlet did, because I remember thinking that FF35 Scarlet's specs were just about a perfect fit for me.
