Monday June 4th.

Every camera company is invited to RED Studios Hollywood for a comprehensive camera test.

Each company can bring their own cameras and techs to supervise the testing. Each camera company can take their resulting footage and process the best way they know possible.

Results will be posted in 2K and 4K. Results will be shown on a 10', 20' and 40' screen.

Comparisons will be made regarding resolution, dynamic range, color and frame rates.

Footage may be captured in RAW or RGB codec. Display will be DCP.

Not sure you'll hear from many takers, Jim. ;-)

Jim, aren't you worried that you may give the competitors fodder for their marketing materials should their cameras prove to be better in the aspects you laid out?

(this is what's called a leading question. take it away, Jim!) ;)

The customer has the right to know...

BTW... not worried.

Jim, if I could be a part of this as a spare pair of hands or even document the process I would be grateful for the experience. I'm local :)

This sounds awesome! Even though I have doubts that the other companies will answer the call, it would be cool to see Canon, Sony, and Arri all officially send someone to represent their cameras:)

Sounds like a great idea with everything being presented with the future of cinematography in mind. I hope the major camera companies take the bite, I'd like to see the results, got a dragon prototype to test too?!

Since every camera company is invited and they can control every aspect of the testing... I would be disappointed if they didn't show up. This test will be the only one where each company has complete control of their camera and testing.

We will provide lunch at N/C... so there is absolutely no reason for them not to come. :)

On top of the tech specs, i'd like to see 300fps 60-0mph crash tests of the camera bodies - Extremely important in my buying decision :)

Free lunch! Only question is will you be serving hot or only RAW?

Besides the fact that they're gonna get their asses kicked ;)

Jim, I have a better idea (I think). Invite producers and others in the decision making process to RED Studios for an in depth look at RED imagery, including workflow. Do some mythbusting. Set people straight. Arm them with knowledge they can take into meetings when these types of discussions come up. You'll be amazed how many people have facts wrong. And in fairness, this is probably the case for other cameras as well. I'm sometimes involved in some of these discussions and you'd be amazed at what is said, how things are rationalized, what the motivations are, etc. You have a very successful digital cinema camera lineup. You've sold more cameras than Arri or Sony (high end digital cinema). The real fight is in the world of perception. Win that, and you won't have to worry about camera tests. You just have to worry about continuing to push the boundaries and continuing to build relationships. I understand the temptation to get sucked into this testing thing but honestly, there are probably better ways to accomplish the goal of informing people.

Now, if the other companies take you up on the offer, I admit I'll probably pay attention. :)

A raw bar for lunch...a very subtle tongue-in-cheek idea. :wink5:

I'll look forward to the results of this but don't envy the hassles and headaches RED will suffer from taking something like this on. As others have said regarding the Zacuto tests, there will always be acrimony and wild, biased accusations of "unfairness" from people, no matter how truly fair, genuine, or democratic the testing process might actually be.

Funny thing is, there are many reason why I own an EPIC and the results of this or any other comparison test wouldn't change that. I have a hunch that's true for most RED users.

There can be no unfairness if every camera company can attend and bring their own cameras and techs... then take their footgear to wherever they want for processing. That is what is missing from other "so called tests".

Actually... this should be fun for everyone.

Will color grading be involved? One of the biggest problems with non-raw formats is that once you get it... you can't really do much to it. if you want to color it you're fighting artifacts big time. It is extremely frustrating to have my creativity limited by a codec.

Everyone should have some visual effects shots as well (same vendor) - I don't know the last time I saw a film that didn't have some effects shots, especially the hidden kind. End to End Workflow. Really important.
