  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Re-grade your footage...

We are recommending that everyone download the new REDCINE-X (Mac or Windows) and open some of your old files. They are certainly going to be better than you remembered...

The new FLUT Color Science works a bit of magic on all RED footage, old or new. The power of REDCODE RAW. But you need to try it for yourself.

Spread the word to all your RED-shooting friends. This one should NOT be kept a secret.

See Post #11.

This is all I have been doing for the past couple days. It's amazing what the new color science and FLUT is doing to all my old footage. Whole new camera, again.

It looks so good i'm reprocessing some footage to bump again to HDCAM-SR some TV commercials that are going to be broadcasted for their 2nd year in a row :)

It HAS some magic, no doubt.

THANKS A LOT!

Antoine

I'm getting "parsing" errors when trying to open R3D files. So far nothing will open in the latest REDCINE-X.

Some highly unscientific test I did on some old footage. My experience is that footage can be pushed further with B90.

From the very first tests done in nov 08. Previous processing:

Last winter I did some high speed shots of wrestling, mostly as a test. Pushed to ISO 600.

So, thank you Græme et al.!

I also have the feeling that it is faster to get a good result in the new RC-X.

Sanjin... if you are going to post results, you have to make the WB the same. I'm confused by this last post.

Looks to me like Martin Weiss made a lot of grading changes as well.

???

Jim,

but my last post has exactly the same WB @ 5412K but it's at the another tread:

Could be that you mixed mine with Martin's example above.

I did, it was meant as a real life test, where I found that I get better results quicker with the new B90. Also, on the wrestling pictures I can get more out of the image. (If the post lends to confusion, please do delete it.)

Here's one comparison with the same settings.

Both processed @ 5.6k, 320ISO, slight S-curve.

I'm finally getting an hour's peace here to go through some more of my old footage and re-process it with the new REDSpace/REDGamma/FLUT and I'm really enjoying seeing how it makes my old footage better.

Yep,

Very coolio on all fronts. Same shot. Same timecode. Whole new ballgame.

B90 really helps reduce the "Fake-Tan" look that was an unfortunately all too easy outcome from RED footage. As soon as I get this current project delivered I'm definitely going to give this a whirl for our reel version.

Does this mean that for Final Cut Studio users we would have to transcode in REDCine to see the advantage of the FLUT and new colour science? Is it correct to say I cannot get the same image quality or colour reproduction out of Color? I'd appreciate some brief clarification on this...

Just tried a quick grading on my Windows laptop, never did much outside of WB before. I'm no coloring expert but I like the new interface and I think the new color settings handle skin tones better/"truer". [I only have access to two shots at the moment because of a bad power supply, if this comparison doesn't help highlight the subtle skin tone differences as I think it does, please feel free to delete it]

Great question. I'd really like to know this as well. I've actually been wondering if the new color science circa build 20 was being utilized through color 1.5 and the latest FCS installer. If anyone has a definitive answer on either of these questions please let me know.

Best regards,

Omar

These are really great examples of what this new color science can do. It's amazing how much warmth was brought out in the football yet at the same time the red was pulled out of the skin-tones to make them much more natural. Really noticeable on the thumb knuckle of the subject's right hand.

Can someone from RED comment on this?

I'm not from RED but it has been suggested that the new Color science will be implemented in a future release of the QT codec.

Currently COlor only supports the "old" color science.

Check this thread for more info and maybe let Apple know this is important to you.
