  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Raven vs Scarlet-W

The weight of both of those cameras are the same at 3.5 lbs.

Not exactly. Raven is 3.5lbs with lens mount and media bay. Scarlet-W is 3.5lbs with media bay. According to Red and Phil's infos. But it's not a big difference for sure.

Well I think I am almost convinced for the Scarlet W, it looks like a better investment for the future. I really like this forum! Thanks for all the advices guys!

Valid question and good thoughts. There's a lot of perspectives on it. With Weapon I've been using the bolt on DSMC2 LCD 7.0" Touch with and without the DSMC2 Top Handle. I go back and forth depending on what I'm doing. I've held in my hands the Raven with the 4.7" LCD Touch and that DSMC2 Universal Top Handle. Much like the DSMC2 Top Handle, the Universal is there in front of the display. At times not ideal, at times it doesn't really matter. Depends on how you work really. The good news is you can easily detach the Top Handles if you need them out of the way.

You can of course use the other LCD/EVF port on the brain. The 4.7" LCD doesn't articulate ideally for that, but I've used the 7.0" LCD there and it's been cool. The next step is moving the LCD away from the camera and that happens with the DSMC2 LEMO Adapters.

I did notice that the description page for the Base I/O V-Lock seems to have been updated with this:

"NOTE: The DSMC2 Top Handle is NOT fully compatible with the DSMC2 Base I/O V-Lock Expander, as the top handle will interfere with the battery when one is attached to the expander module."

Ha ok thanks :) Is this codec only used with Avid or can be aread with final cut pro x too? Anyway Red Code and Pro Res are great for me

I made the switch to the Scar W cause i need it more for a B Cam that can be used with a PL Mount, 4 grand more can't argue with the extra stuff!!!

4 grand plus the cost of whatever mount you want, so over 5. basically another raven brain.

I was set on Raven now I am on the fence on whether to reach for the W. I could use the extra resolution for stills and the interchangeable OLPF's would be great to have.

In my honest opinion, the .5K isn't all that much. However, I would like to have the extra vertical resolution. Even at 4.5K on the W, you get a taller image. Though, the capabilities at 4.5K, 4K, and the rest are the same. If W was 6K, it would be a different argument. Also, worth a mention that RAVEN looks better aesthetically and is a more attractive package, obviously in my opinion. The standard OLPF is beautiful so I won't really miss them. If you can justify the extra cash, W is definitely a good option, though don't discount the RAVEN for its drawbacks. Not many to choose anyway.

That's subjective, right. I think the Scarlet-W is gorgeous, I'm glad they didn't put the grooves all over which will collect dust and dirt I'm afraid. But the scarlet is not only about resolution, lens mount and OLPF. It can do anamorphic. And you can use any 3D LUT that you found or created to apply to your monitors and/or to the prores file. The difference in price is not much compared to the extra power. You're right though, nobody will make a mistake buying a Raven.

I have to agree with Marco on the aesthetics - all black body of the Raven is sexy....Scarlet-W not so much due to the lighter grey sections which in my opinion make it look "cheaper" which is really unfortunate as it is enough of a difference to factor into my purchasing decision. If I can swing it, I will still be picking up the Scarlet-W for the 5K & anamorphic ability, but even if not, I'd still be happy with the Raven.

Or you can cover it with black modules and black attachments of various sorts. I'm thinking of getting the forged sidekick. Which reminds me, it's pretty cool that all of the modules for Scarlet-W/Raven work with Forged Weapon. For everyone moving up in time.

There's also this: https://elementtechnica.com/product-category/cameras/red-cameras/weapon/ a little nifty cheeseplate from ET. They also have a slick v-mount.

Well it's been a long time since black doesn't mean pro anymore. Any still or motion camera is black out there. At least it's nice to see a camera which is different with its own personality.

If I end up switching to the Scarlet-W, I'll embrace the color, no matter what :D

Hi guys just a quick question. I have worked until now with a canon c100 mark II and I was thinking, it will be useful as B cam if I shot with the Scarlet in 2K? You think will be a problem to mach the shots? Thanks

Have never understood the argument about camera body, it's about the image not the body color of the camera & nobody cares about it........least off all the people on set or an audience watching the end result.

Ha ha lovely post! Me also preordered a Scarlet and would laugh my ass of if I heard after a screening "awesome movie, wtf was the color of the camera?" Just wish it would exist a option like for FS7 to have a speed booster on Red cropped sensors..

I apologize if this has already been answered but I can't seem to find it after some heavy searching. Does anyone know what the *exact* weight and physical dimension difference is between the Raven (with permanent EF mount) and the Scarlet-W with the lightest (aluminum I'm guessing) EF mount? As far as dimensions, I am interested in the length of the cameras (front to back). Is the Scarlet-W longer due to the interchangeable mount?

The differences might seem negligible to some but I'm on the fence between the two cameras primarily due to these two details. Can anyone help?
