  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Raven.... Everything Just Changed.

It's crazy because I already own an Epic Dragon, but this is like the feeling i had before my first Camera from Red came.. I'm still going to use my epic all the time.. the raven is going to work perfectly with it!!

So is it not 16:9 in 4.5k? I think I read it in this thread some where but did not find any specs on red.com

If you shoot 16:9 Raven is only 4K.

Looking forward to hearing more about these. Updating and posting about these tonight?

Haha, no, the steps I mentioned last a little longer than a few hours to finish ID, machine parts, coat them, laser etch, shoot, edit, and load onto RED.com. You are looking mid-Nov timeframe...

Raven
140 MB/s max data rate

...that's double Scar-D !!
SCARLET DRAGON up to 72 MB/s

And not that far under Epic-D
EPIC DRAGON up to 200 MB/s

however it is less then half of CF WEAPON
WEAPON DRAGON (CARBON FIBER) up to 300 MB/s

(All info taken from red.com tech specs while using HS mini mags)

Scarlet Dragon has just been cannibalized. He was a good dude though. Underrated guy. I even let him stay with me for a few months before I sent him back home. So young.

O don't worry... The Scarlet engineering team deep inside the RED bunkers are not sitting on their thumbs shaking in a circle with their hands held up to their foreheads crying woe is me.

Scarlet will see its Magnum Opus @ NAB. Or maybe March 1st. Or maybe whenever Brent takes that pain in the ass virus he implanted on all my internet connected devices that makes my system reboot as soon as I start typing Scarlet- <poof>

Funny, with my crew I've been calling the new Scarlet the RED "HAWK": the camera that sits btw WEAPON and RAVEN.

With think this "HAWK" will of course be DSMC2, but surpass Raven by being 5K, and have interchangeable olpfs and mounts.

Dream machine.

We called it!!!!!

Can't wait to find out the truth!

Please run a virus scanner and spill even a few beans!!! :)

If you shoot 16:9 Raven is only 4K.

Thats a pity. True 4k resolution from a single sensor bayer, according to Nyquest, needs a 4.5k ish sensor.

Defining a camera category by a single parameter (k) has become hopeless as manufacturers are all over the place with sensor size an aspect ratio.
I wouldnt be surprised if Netflix and bbc defer to Nyquest in their production specs.

It's likely 4.5k WS, like the R1mx... Which is also why I was hoping they'd try to do it for Scarlet-MX still (even this late in the game).

Just thinking out loud.
Dragon 6K @24P 6:1 has a data rate of 119MB/s, under the 140MB/s of the Raven. One of the points of the Scarlet is shooting stills @6k. I guess it will be the exact same sensor we already have in our scarlet D. They already maxed out the Raven, technically it seems it can't do more than what it does now.

That's why I'm really curious now. The datarate will be at least as good or better than the Raven. The sensor should be the same 6K one to shoot stills and be transfered during the upgrade process to reduce costs. Red is not known for limiting intentionally their hardware. So (if it's just a question of datarate, and I'm not sure at all) it can theoretically do 6k @60fps 13:1 (datarate: 138MB/s).

If the scarlet is limited to 5k (with a new smaller sensor) I'll then maybe consider the Raven which is a crazy bargain for a 0.5k only difference. Canon lenses are great and standard OLPF makes more and more sense to me (the weapon is cleaner in the shadows, and there is a new thread about the STH that explains the weird focus behaviors I'm experiencing with my camera).
If the sensor is the same as before, and if Red is putting the same power they put in the Raven in the new scarlet, it should be pretty close to the 6k cameras. So what will happen with these ones?
Interesting times. And probably harder times for Red to please all their former and newer customers at once.

Hahaha how about telex or smoke signals Jarred? RED rocks, Scarlet will be getting their looooove too!

It's already been said butI just want to point out again that there are EF to PL mount adaptors that work with a lot of lenses out there.
Check your own lenses to see if they might be compatible.

That aside I have a different issue. When Raven was mooted a lot of people were complaining that the sensor size would end up being much smaller than super 35mm. I have a lot of 16mm lenses and was actually excited by the idea but now it seems unclear if Raven is using the same dragon sensors or custom dragon sensors and what the coverage would be like in relation to 16mm lenses.

Can anyone update me on the current situation with that?

Same pixels, same size, just more of them. You can use those pixels or crop, nothing lost.
