  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Raven delivery

My personal thoughts are RED's going to be pushing DSMC[SUP]2[/SUP] babies out of the womb at a fairly rapid pace from here to just a bit past NAB 2016.

Weapon is the tricky one (ones) as they are dealing with the upgrade process. That throws a wrench into the logistics in terms of QCing the Epics and Scarlets that come in and scheduling all that.

Newly built cameras; Weapon, Scarlet-W, and Raven will be a bit quicker to be birthed.

I wouldn't be shocked if we saw all of the announced DSMC[SUP]2[/SUP] cameras shipping before NAB 2016 or just around there.

Thank you for chiming in Phil, your opinion hold a lot of weight. As a side note appreciate all the information you've consistently put on this forum. And boy am I going to be excited if they do put ship in a rapid pace. NAB 2016 is about to be legendary.

Hello everyone! I'm new to here but I am also new to RED. I've been shooting on BlackMagic cameras for the last year but I've now come to point where I am going to jump into the RED ecosystem. I'm going to be putting a deposit on the RAVEN today or tomorrow at the latest and want to get some kind of idea of when I should except them. I saw that the sensors have not arrived yet (from the January update), however, once they do arrive, they'll start shipping since there is no prior upgrades. I know Scarlet-W is the priority since it ships in a few weeks. Though I've heard people have dropped their reservation of the RAVEN and have gone over to the W for the extra resolution and feature set. So realistically, I know I can't a guarantee, when should I except to take delivery? I'm hoping their production schedule will ramp up, looks like they have with the Weapon upgrades!

Thanks everyone in advance for the replies.

I just per-ordered my Raven today coming from a GH4 I think it's a good start a bit over my budget but when you want move up the ladder you need the tools to get you there. I got my confirmation email my rep said early Spring release.

I got some hands on time with Raven and Scarlet-W last night at the SF #REDRECON2016 meetup. You guys are gonna be blown away by this camera. I've been using the Scarlet since it came out in 2011 but the new Raven is a dramatic leap forward in RED's indie/owner op offering.

As for the release date, like Phil said, what's going to make Raven and Scarlet-W different from Weapon is that there's no upgrade pipeline getting in the way. As fast as they make them, they'll send them out. My not-at-all-scientific estimate is that if you put in a deposit today, you will be shooting in May. Red has come a VERY long way from a shipping and delivery standpoint.

Good to hear. I've heard plenty of good things about the Raven. I do have a question for you though. I haven't used a RED camera before but I am aware of the available compression available on their other cameras. For the Raven, is it a range between 3:1 to the highest or is it preselected?

There is a broad range, but the available range changes based on what fps/resolution you're shooting. You can shoot as low as 3:1 at 4.5K @ 24FPS. The compression floor increases as you scale up in resolution or frame rates. 7:1 for 60FPS. 13:1 for 120FPS.

General consensus is that most feature films shoot from 5:1 to 7:1. Television shoots from 7:1 to 10:1. 1080P Web projects shoot from 8:1 to 12:1.

REDCODE will change your life. Flexibility, data rates, ease of editing, it's all there. Once you know how to wrangle it, it's relatively easy to get great content out of it.

What's the range in 4.5K 24FPS? 3:1 to what?
Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I'm coming from a BlackMagic which shot DNG. Lovely stuff but the files were incredibly massive. ProRes wasn't much better and it lacked a bit of DR. Raven is the answer to both while keeping me shooting RAW.

The range is 3:1 (lowest compression, highest data rate) to 22:1 (highest compression, lowest data rate).

For DSMC2s, 22:1 will always be the other end of the range. Typically, you would not want to shoot past 12:1 for any paid gig, but the options are there to experiment with.

24FPS: 3:1->22:1
60FPS: 7:1->22:1
120FPS: 13:1->22:1.

From there you could see how bigger budget productions will want the Weapon if they're routinely doing high speed work for 4K export. Better compression ratios, better downscale. I think it's great that the Raven is this capable though. I would throw 13:1 high speed shots on a timeline for sure.

Thanks for the info man! Super helpful. Personally, I cannot wait until I receive the Raven. I've been a fan of RED for a long time and it just hasn't hit me yet that I'll be owning one!

That's awesome! Welcome to the family. Let me or anyone of us know if you've got any questions!

We're seriously looking at a new camera for 2016 and the Raven could be it, but I'm concerned about the actual delivery timeline. If I were to pre-order next week could we realistically expect delivery in March like the store says?

In another thread today:

March 17th is when the Raven spreads its wings.

Good eyes Terry!!! That's awesome news.

Saw that too! So March 17th. I have another question for ya. How many Ravens do you think are on order? I'm trying to get a rough idea on when I should get mine. I ordered it a few days ago. Also, about how many Ravens do you think will be shipping per week? Any insight would be helpful!

The only ones who would know how many are ordered and how many will ship would be the RED team. I won't even hazard a guess as to how many are on preorder. When I ordered my Scarlet X one month after it was announced, I wound up with brain #2098. RED is faster than they've ever been, so my guesstimate based on past pre-order experiences, the Raven pre-order list floating around on REDuser, and the fact that Raven is a new camera, leads me to believe that a pre-order made today will be received in May. Just managing expectations.

I am trying to manage expectations as well. However, with Jarred Land being confident in posting the release date and also mentioning that when they get the sensors in, they'll be shipping immediately makes me confident in receiving mine faster than that. I hope I can receive it before NAB, but again, let's be realistic. Haha. I suppose its also the pure excitement and anxiety that's kicking in from my first purchase. And also, the fact that people have swapped over to the Scarlet-W makes me feel a bit better! :)

Also, do you have any experience with the Quad Charger? I'm picking up two XLs and need a charging solution. Right now I am planning on using the XL module to charge but I don't think that will be efficient. Plus, I don't want to keep installing and uninstalling the module to charge up the batteries. Quad is the only solution and it seems to be quite a bit faster, 2 hours for a full charge (or so it states). Any recommendations?

I have had the Quad for quite awhile and it works fine. I'd say the spring loaded bays can get a little temperamental so you want to be sure the batteries are seated well and are charging before you walk away. Works great for charging Redvolts, too.
