We're seriously looking at a new camera for 2016 and the Raven could be it, but I'm concerned about the actual delivery timeline. If I were to pre-order next week could we realistically expect delivery in March like the store says?

You got me excited. I thought maybe they pulled a big surprise and started to ship them.
I would say it's unlikely you will get it in March. There really isn't any solid info anyone can tell you other than there is a lot of demand for these. Who knows though. I have hopes. I only pre ordered about a week ago. No one can tell you a definitive answer though unfortunately.

Bummer, we might have to go a different route as we need something sooner than later.

Be honest with yourself, there is nothing comparable out there. Assuming Raven really does fill the bill in terms of your camera needs, you are actually going to buy a different camera because of maybe 4-6 weeks of a delivery issue?

RED has been much better about delivery in recent times so, while the delivery window of March may be suspect since you are pretty far down the queue, if they are still showing that in the store, it may be that they expect to hit that target.

I agree that for the price there's not much competition, but it honestly could make a big difference with our schedule. We have a lot of work lined up for February and March and I'd really like to get the new kit up and running for all of it.

my advice would be to rent a dragon, you can get pretty good deals right now and then just wait for the raven to come, the footage will match up well. Having said that there has been no news of any late delivery from red yet. i suppose the question will be can they work on the weapon, scarlet and raven at the same time. I'm thinking they are.

I agree with Matthew. Why commit to something else? If your business is strong in the March time frame, do you think that won't continue? Rent a RED, get comfortable and expert with shooting it and hit the ground running when your Raven ships.

I know others here like various camera other than RED; there are lively discussion here all the time. But, honestly, I think REDcode is without parallel and the move to another camera in anything near the price range is a step down.

In any case, good luck with your decision. BTW - I think (but you will want to double check), the deposit is refundable.

I talked to Red yesterday and asked them this question. They said they are on target for March shipping (even though originally it was February), but he said there is a large pool of pre-orders, so if you ordered now delivery would be most likely April or even May.

I know this is Red forum and people are cheering for Red the most but buy a camera when you need one, not when you want one. Renting Red Dragon for few project and every project lasting few days might not be the best idea as it can come up to the budget of Raven fast. If you can do this project on a Sony FS-7/FS-5 then buy that camera, do the projects and then sell the camera. Those are sill cameras people are buying and wont be hard to sell, even if you sell it at much lower price and youll still spend less then on renting a Dragon, or just keep it as a b-cam, backup camera,... If you really have a lot of projects lined up then money shouldnt be that much of a problem. Hold your deposit at Red for Raven and stay in line. When you get the email from RED that your camera is ready then decide to buy or to pull out...
Maybe youll even love the camera youll buy now and wont need to go to Raven. I know Red has more stuff to offer but you dont always need that.

If joining the queue now, summerish. Dont forget accessories may trail actual delivery of body.

planning for upcoming commercial projects require a reasonable plan of attack. Not wise to cut it so close. Leave a bit wiggle room for the unexpected.

Yeah, this is exactly our problem. Budgeting for a month or so of rentals while waiting on delivery isn't that big of a deal, but if that turns into 6 months we're in trouble.

I would be happy with April! I'm putting my preorder in today or tomorrow. Was it Red who said (for late preorders) "delivery would most likely be April or May" or is that your conclusion based on what they said? Thanks for the info.

Just curious... what do you consider competitive enough (and available) to order instead of Raven?

I think they proved that by building new Weapons rather than upgrading from Dragons to Weapons, they can assemble the cameras quite fast. When they've taken care of the Weapon Mg orders they should be able to devote all personnel to RAVENs and Scarlett Ws. Things may go pretty fast once they get rolling.

Just my guess.

That would be awesome. Learned my lesson on being punctual for preorders though, so I don't have to nag reduser about shipping expectations.

Probably a FS7. I know it's not the same caliber of camera, but it's good enough for our needs.

Yes it IS true not good idea to plan on "expected" delivery dates, but I'm pretty confident this bad ass line up will be out before nab. I have a feeling this is reds year to dominate. BMD has been promising their new camera for a long long time.. Raven is gonna knock em out the box
