Got my Raven 2 days ago, but only yesterday did I remember that I bought the app Foolcontrol from (our very own) Mikael Lubtchansky a good while a go.
I´ve been beta testing some of his first RED software and was always impressed, but Foolcontrol is blowing my socks off.
Connected my Raven without trouble, and from my iPhone, I could control almost every aspect of the camera. Even pulling focus on my Sigma 18-35mm!

The only problem was that I forgot my phone in the car and the 45min hike back was´t an option. I could really have used the app as I needed to remote start the camera as I was operating another one handheld (the Raven being locked off on a tripod) instead I had to run back and start it and run back to my position.

Anyway, just wanted to make people aware of the app incase someone dosen´t know about it.

Excellent job Mikael

I second that. Since I've been using Foolcontrol, it's become invaluable and I almost can't believe I used to work without it.

Thank you Mikael!!

awesome to hear the app works well with the RAVEN and Sigma, looking forward to using that combo extensively

Nice :) So bad it's impossibile to pull focus with an iphone and a ronin at the same time! Ah! I'm just waiting for the LATITUDE standalone mode 3 firmware before buying that gorgeous rt motion thumbwheel :)

Luca, have you played with the new linear 'multispeed' focus page for 'eyes off' single operator focusing ?

Uuuu interesting!!!! :) I didn't know, I don't have my raven yet! Is it comfortable tu use it? An iphone is still pretty big!

Yes... Not a gimbal user myself and as a doco cameraman I started this thumbwheel + internal motor project last year... It ended up in latitude but was a selfish idea to begin with ;-)

Maybe it was ;) but look how much you put on the table ah! Thank you for the tip anyway!!!

I can confirm as well it that FoolControl works amazing with Raven and Sigma 18-35mm lens this app is a must have and I want to say Thank you to Mikael for the discount on the app my wallet is hurting at the moment but with the projects I should be ok.

Thanks Luis :-)

Let me know if you need any help or have any question on the new linear focus page in foolcontrol....
Basically you can touch anywhere and push up or down to push or pull focus and if you go toward the right side it will be fast and slower when dragging toward the left edge... Need to do some video tutorial to show all those features... (As soon as I finish the new lift gamma gain page I'll try to do this properly).

Hey Mikael - what is the range of FoolControl? How far away can I be from the camera for it to work? Thanks!!

to add to Michael's question, anyone know how much this from Wooden Camera will increase the wi-fi range?

Will do some test as soon as I'll have one with and without Wooden Camera's new external antenna...

Regarding wifi range, everything is subject to several variables. The surrounding networks and other wifi signals in your area are the main sources of interferences... The other thing is to try to use infrastructure instead of ad hoc mode whenever possible to increase both range and ease of reconnecting and maintaining the connection up. Even a cheap 25 $ USB powered router like a TPLink Wr802N is a huge improvement vs ad hoc mode.

that said Wooden camera's wifi side plate will certainly increase the range a lot (can also vary depending on which kind of antenna you'll attach) by offering a similar external antenna connector as found of the xenomorph or panavision dxl cameras :)

If you use a top plate on your dsmc2 that reduces the wifi range this external antenna system will be a must have....

Wow!

I'll be a first time Red owner come early 2017 (or sooner God willing). Your post inspired me to go ahead and do more research on Foolcontrol. Am I correct in understanding that the app works with any EF lens? Pulling focus electronically from an iPhone would be amazing.

it's true, all of it :-)

joke aside, as long as your EF or Nikon lenses have internal motors recognised by the camera as AF (preferably those listed in the DSMC operational guide) you're good to start pulling focus on your iPhone... and more.

Why can't someone make a little focus wheel that plugs into the headphone jack of an iphone. This could work with Foolcontrol to give a more precise focus ?
