  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Quote...

From Greg Williams:

"Mysterium-X is the bridge I was looking for between the stills and
movie world. The original Mysterium served me very well on my Red One
but I was always pushing the boundaries with the files and working on
stories for which the quality worked as a cinematic effect, but I could
not put my hand on heart to say it compared to what I could pull out
of a DSLR.

Mysterium-X changes all that. Detail in blacks, use in tungsten light
and a tremendously improved dynamic range put the stills right up
there. This sensor WILL change how photographers work in a huge way
and forever.

As a result of the new lighter Epic camera I believe that 90% of the
photographers, who can afford the new camera, will all become
photographer/directors within the next 3 years. The first true Digital
stills motion camera is here. Exciting times."

Greg Williams

Now THAT is a quote :) Thanks for sharing Jarred, Jim RED et al.

Stu, Jim made it clear that the Mysterium -X in the RED ONE will be an improvement, BUT will be somewhat limited by the RED ONE "pipes" (for lack of a better tech word). To get the full benefits of the new sensor, EPIC -X is the way to go as the circuitry and "Brain" are built to maximize it. Especially faster frame rates...

A new development 20 minutes ago Jarred? That is awesome! thanks for sharing the development process. Call me crazy, but I always read the "subject to change" as a mostly "positive" connotation... as RED is "Boldly going where no one has gone before" breakthroughs and AHA moments must occur daily... so of course one would expect "delays" if it means BETTER.

Mantras to adopt as a RED user. "Good things come to those who wait" and "ALL delays are DIVINE"

Exciting!

I cant wait, i'm checking this site way too much now! The excitement is too much to bare, i can hardly afford any of the camera's at the mo but when i hear qoutes like that i kinda think wow!! Really exciting times indeed!!

Why not?

I've been waiting for this since the R1. Hoping that I wouldn't need to purchase a separate DSLR just so I could shoot some fancy time lapse.

The next question I have but i think it has already been answered.

3. Has the rolling shutter / flash, strobe issue been eliminated or reduced?

Respectfully

If I recall Jim's post correctly, he said that the R1 skew time (ie roll duration) was 9ms. Film is 4. Epic is 5.

Take from that what you will.

Greg is absolutely right spot on!!

I agree with such statement which I have been making myself over and over, in various talks, including in my Hassy forums ;) in support of that, I have already sold a very comprehensive Canon collection of Cameras, Glass and accesories, and believe me I wish nothing more then to also have to sale all my Hassy H3DII-39 stuff for the Epic 645, instead of upgrading to the H4D-60.

RED already has, and continues to make so much news, talk, and hope in the Medium Format world that is truly to be experienced first hand to understand it, we are talking a global media of Pro photographer which already spend an average of 30 to 50K on a MF system, so the EPIC 645 will be right there, but at absolutely incredible new meanings for the photography world.

Absolutely fantastic!

I could arrange shootout between RED1 M-X and new Leica M9 photo camera.

And of course that both of them with the best Leica M glass on.

The best glass + the best sensor = the best pictures.

Then the photographers/directors can see what is going on there...

Very nice!

My personal hope is that the M-X RedOne body upgrade is not offered until EpicX is ready. Granted, this is for selfish reasons so i'll be upfront about that, I have no desire to do the Red body upgrade, only to head straight to EpicX, so it'd be great to not have months of inbetween

Sorry if this has been discussed/announced elsewhere, but does this quote in the original post indicate that The Social Network will be shot on Red?

Fincher has used Red on a few commercials, so I was hoping he would use it on this film.

Any info on which configuration he'll be using? Red One body with M-X? Epic prototype? One of the first Scarlets off the line?

Thanks.

(Sorry of this is too off-topic)

Great news, Jim!
Congrats, RED team!

Imagine if Néstor Almendros had lived to see the Mysterium in action...
Thank you Jim.

Epic-X meets Red One - hybrid

Epic-X meets Red One - hybrid

We are putting together some RED ONE Mysterium-X cameras for upgrade testing and a couple of high profile directors have run them through their paces. The 1st AC had a big smile on his face after seeing the results and gave this quote.

"To me, the new sensor is the biggest leap I've seen RED achieve. We rated the sensor at ISO 500 and did not see any noise in the blacks in low level lighting situations. The image is super clean." Steve Meizler

1st Assistant Camera on Saving Private Ryan, Artificial Intelligence: AI, Ocean's Twelve, War of the Worlds, Ché, The Informant, Social Network, among several others. Steve has been 1st AC on four feature films (and a few commercials) shot on RED...

I expect that we will have more quotes as the cameras get into the hands of a few more pros.

Jim

If I send a couple of Red One Cameras down (since I am north of California), can I get mine upgraded with the Mysterium-X sensor. I assume this type of retrofit will bring new life into the old Red Ones. I assume this is one path Red can implement with the Epic -X trade in - Red Ones with Mysterium-X. Or glue all the Red Ones together to make the largest Red One pyramid on the planet.
