  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Quick Look - LG 31" DCI 4K Monitor

JImmy,

Good to hear. Can you try the standard Display port and report back on that please? What about HDMI?

Looks like Apple's been working.

After upgrading my 2013 Mac Pro (D700) to the latest Yosemite 10.10.3 beta, I'm now reliably getting 4096x2160 @ 60 Hz using the included mini-DP to DP cable with this LG display. That has given me the confidence to order a second one so I can run a dual display system.

Its been a few months and Im glad to hear the news about this display.

Of course with NAB in a few weeks I am sure new ones will pop-up or we will see some that are on the floor ready for us to pick apart.

But I have budget to burn before end of March so I need to buy one of these now.

Anyone test this with a REDRAY and/or Black Magic UltraStudio 4K?

please excuse me for thread jacking...

I'm really torn between

and this product

Right now I'm using 2x Dell 22". They are TN panels, LCD based and only have a resolution of 1680x1050. I have audio monitors, they're at the very edge of my computer desk because of the side by side setup(40 inches side to side). Both of the top two options above would give me ample room to fit the audio monitors fully on my desk.
I have owned the dell set since 2008 and I think it's time I got a single large monitor with lots of screen real estate.

I'll be driving this monitor with a gtx 780 6GB edition. HDMI, Displayport are available on the card.

One of the attractive things to me about the 31" LG is due to the 4096x2160 resolution, which is DCI 4K. Also, UHD 4K is 3840x2160. So this monitor allows you to watch properly finished 4K material at 1:1 pixel resolution without scaling.

This is very, very important to me for general QC and review of 4K finished material I work on.

I would have bought this monitor just for that honestly, especially at this price. However, it has become my main workstation monitor and what I've been using now for a while. It's changed my workflow for the better as far as I'm concerned. When I'm editing now in Premiere Pro for instance I'm essentially looking at two 1080p sized images for my source and timeline monitors with health real estate for the timeline itself and bins.

Been working well for me so far. That's pretty much all I can say about it. If I kept it, still use it, and like it that's about the best review I can give really.

I will say that the resolution of this screen might not be for everybody, but most figure out how to scale text or whatever and that works for them.

Thanks again for your insight Phil.

sorry - ignore

Jimmy be aware that this will cost you a whole TB2 'lane' (2 ports) (The 6 ports are divided into 3 sections)
So this makes 4 ports for the 2 monitors at 4K 60hz. (Because of bandwith)

Hi PHil - You use it as a primary monitor then?. I always thought of using it as a secondary monitor which I can properly calibrate but would like to know what works for you.

Yeah, it's not an ideal situation but I have found that I can run slower I/O on the same TB2 lane that my LG 31MU97 is connected. I have one fast SSD RAID that will get the third lane dedicated to it. When the new Mac Pro came out, I never thought that I could saturate all of it's I/O so quickly. I'm looking forward to Thunderbolt 3, but don't expect an updated Mac Pro until sometime next year.

It was 1299 a week ago when I pressed the button.

Will, press the price button and it will show the $1199. Wish I would have seen that on Sunday when I ordered mine. :( Oh well, mine arrives tomorrow.

I think this might be the panel Eizo is using in their upcoming 4k display.

I'm wondering if there's something good for NAB around the corner with these two recent price drops I've seen from B&H. How long as this monitor been out?

Almost four months of wide availability.

Well I wouldn't say "availability".

I had to cancel twice due to vendors missed delivery targets.

Finally got one from BH and glad the price dropped.

Ordered it next day from Amazon with no issues!

Well this was back in November up to January.
We gave up on it after that.
Im glad cause we saved a bit now.
Dont really care if they announce anything new, it usually takes months after anyway.

It dropped 200 dollars in 10 tens.

If you need glasses at 5' from a 55" display your in trouble. :)

My point was the opposite. The difference between 4K and 1080 is very obvious on my 55" from 5'. On the 31" LG on the other hand, I found the value of 4K to be less obvious. For my purposes, the size of the screen turned out to be much more important than the accuracy and true 4K of the LG. I already have a nice Flanders reference monitor that is my primary tool.
