  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Quick Look - LG 31" DCI 4K Monitor

did u mean the general graphic card output ?

u can use ICC profiles, but that will not calibrate to a target gamut (which is what calibration is all about)... but it can pretty accurately correct the 1D, greyscale and target white point... which may already be enough because this screen is not gonna be used for color critical work anyways... ;-)

it appears most folks use it for general OS display and/or editing...

I'm looking into a 4k TV as an option and deciding if a single monitor setup is for me first. Researching mostly at the moment. I'd say the LG 31" Display is worth $300 in a year and believe the current price is overkill. I actually saw sharper images on a smaller display at Fries playing 4k images of Hobbitown and some ruins in South America.

The small GUI ruined it for me. I just can't work at the cost of going blind like Phil can, the guy is a wonder!

I found 31" 4k isn't much different than 2k at 31". So I'm going larger in search of my 4k editing glory!

I currently use XVMs and FSI's CM series so my goal is just having a GUI that's in the ballpark (relatively speaking). The majority of work is rec 709 realm too. I'd like to scale down to single GUI display along with more accurate color between the grading monitor and my timeline. I'd be very surprised to find this panel running less than 50% off original list within 2-3 years, especially since most are only UHD vs DCI 4K.
 
NAB should be interesting this year. 4k TVs are out, there not that expensive, 4k monitors under $1000 very soon. I haven't been in the market until recently for a 4k screen. Finding the right one will take some time and research. I took at look at 10-20 screens, most of which were 4k at Fries Electronics. The Samsungs seemed to look the best and were recommended by the head video/audio guy. He also mentioned the LGs OLEDs that are coming are going to be pretty nice.

For $2500 there are some very good 4k options it seems. Not that long ago they were rare and cost $20k+. So this is nice to be where we are at.

FSI has some great user feedback, I'd like to support them. $3-5k for 1080p just isn't going to work. Why buy anything 1080p now if 4k is here? We've arrived.

Did you pay $6500 for your CM250 OLED?

Quick question about LG, Im getting this blurred right side of the screen.

Any quick answers?

Little less. They run good deals now and then, especially with show models.

Eric - how are you feeding the monitor? DP or TB?
 
Is it exactly at the half way point? Where does the blur start? I didn't have this happen with mine but there is a mode for Split Screen Coloring for comparison. I didn't explore it much, maybe Phil has an idea.

Don't really know what the blur is. I'm not experiencing it, but I'm also not tech support. But it could be a few things I imagine. I'd start with inspecting the panel for damage perhaps?

Yikes! That I can afford to deal with.
Took forever to this display approved then purchase.
Its about an inch from right bezel.
You can see the basic desktop icons blurring and ghosting double images.
Ill try and post a pic.
But Im going to test other cables first.
It does not show up with REDRAY.
 
The blurred issue comes up when I use the DP to TB cable.



With straight HDMI, the display is pristine.

My other issue is that this sucker falls asleep all the time to the point where it takes minutes to get going.

I better spend some time on it soon but work sched is too crazy at the moment.

Tried ScreenResX and same result.

Its the 60Hz option that causes it.

Tested with resolutions under the 60Hz refresh and they all do this.

Its only on Mac Pro since the REDRAY looks fine.

Wow setting it at 6100 plus is crazy to look at :)
 
After checking around the only fix I have for new Mac Pro with this display is to update to Yosemite.

I can now get Full 4K at 50Hz which is way better than previous.

Plus that blurred right crap is gone.
 
All my strange behaviours of the LG disappeared with the upgrade to Yosemite.. so guess you shouldn't have any problems anymore, glad it wasn't a hardware flaw.

Yep Im glad cause I forced this purchase ;)

Now to sit down and see if its good for Motion Design and 3D work.
Im sure NLEs are fine on it.
 
I love after effects on it! 3D work takes some time to get used to...(for me)
 
My panel arrived last night. Looks good so far for being BStock and few hundred off list. No physical damage other than the bottom of the panel appearing to be loose from the bezel. It doesn't seem to affect illumination or create color shifts from what I've tested so far. Basically I can tap the bottom of the screen and see a gap between it and the bezel. Id wager that's not standard?

Still waiting for some 4K GPUs to arrive before testing more. Anyone receive a factory test sheet with perfect illumination?
 
I thought that was a weird option. The screen is 4k but goes past 4k resolution? Up to 8k scaled? What's going on here?
