  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Questions..?

There is no Ana mode enable on Scarlet yet AFAIK.

Well, in that case... :)
That just a stretched preview, and you can mark any clip as ana in RCX...

If you need to see it stretched, DP6 and a few others do that...

Dear Jarred, I have a question about the new Red Laser projector. The specs sheet speaks about "no calibration", does this mean, it is with a kind of self calibration, and maybe (hopefully) as accurate that it´s possible to use it for color grading on the big screen?
Thank you,
Marc

My question isn't a question as much as an attempt to beg prettily for putting this item higher on your priority list - MOBILE RED ROCKET.

I bought my SCARLET to be my dream field camera. It is my dream field camera. I keep it super lightly rigged with an EVF and side handle and Canon lenses. It's light, beautiful, compact, and I love the images it produces. It has an eensy weensy flaw, though, and no end in sight to this situation. It's my dream field camera in every way but one. No ability to data-check in the field. I looked at the Maxx Digital Mobile Rocket system and an $8K price tag to be able to data-check my $9750 camera leaves me a little breathless - without camera-generated proxies, there is still no good way to do this, except to bring my data into my studio and data-check on a tower.

I don't have these issues with my EPIC-M, which I keep rigged for cinema use. Because feature films can typically afford a data wrangler with a tower. The DRAGON is only going to make matters more pressing because nature, wildlife, adventure, and outdoors shooters are the ones who stand to benefit substantially from the upgrade. The ability to data check in the field made easier would be a huge benefit to this class of shooter.

I work in both fields, nearly equally.

Either designing a firmware upgrade which allows SCARLET users to generate in-camera proxies or else providing a field ROCKET would perfect the system, and I would never, ever ask for anything ever again. Swear..
Meryem, check out the new mLogic M-Link R. http://www.mlogic.com/mlink PCIe to Thunderbolt, so you just put a normal RED ROCKET card in it (note that this link is for the standard version of the mLink). I imagine you could power it in the field off an inverter or 12VDC with a little ingenuity.

They are taking preorders for the mLink R RED ROCKET version for $699: http://www.mlogic.com/mlinkr/preorder

Will Red be coming out with any kind of 4K+ flat panel monitors? Not for on-camera use. I'm talking about something in the range of a 32" display for post-production editing, VFX, and color correction. I think the 4K projector is awesome, but there's a lot of post houses and people that don't have the right room or space for that.

PsF is not on the list. And will likely never be.. because PsF is retarded.

:)

Power management is now a priority... thanks for all the voices on this one.

Yay! And for the record, I think I speak for many when I say that power management can be considered one of the cool features. I'd love it if my camera could intelligently manage its own power and battery usage based on settings I can tweak myself. It all adds to the coolness. Anyway, Epic (and therefore Scarlet) just keep getting better and better.

Nice find, Tom - thanks for the link...I will check it out.

Looks good. Might be a nice option, seems to be a bit more compact than the Sonnet. The Sonnet one seems nice and it's near silent for their single-slot version.

My concern with the MLogic option is heat issues. It doesn't look like there's much ventilation, so if you're transcoding footage for a long time such as overnight will it start to have serious performance issues from heat or even get damaged? Not sure the other TB options have much better ventilation though either. has anyone seen these in person and can comment on that?

Tons of the Sonnet and a few Magma boxes at NAB at various booths. The Sonnet ones seem to be the favorite amongst the "pro" companies like ATTO and those using their controllers, those using the RED Rocket, etc.. Ventilation on the Sonnet ones is great and like I said above, near silent. Of course, if you put a Rocket in one, you have the Rocket's fan to deal with. Ventilation on the Magma box is lacking.

Personally, I'm not a fan of most of Sonnet's products, especially their ExpressCard solutions, but their Thunderbolt to PCIe expanders are looking really good.

Thanks for this thread, Jarred. We just got our Gunner, handles and some SWAT rail stuff today and I've been happily playing with it all day. It's really nice. The two purchases which I am absolutely sold on now are the new EVF and a Pro IO Module. Right now I am using a SmallHD DP6-SDI as my monitor for handheld and, while it is a lovely monitor, an EVF would make a much better tool for the job. Also, I feel that the Pro IO module would be very useful for us and would also serve to help balance our handheld rig.

Thanks for that info. Did Sonnet give a shipping ETA? Any mention of the reliability of the Rocket in it? I imagine it will require Thunderbolt aware drivers for the Rocket, which would need to be developed by/with Red so are likely only in testing phase now?

ATTO H680 and R680 cards are rock-solid in the Sonnet. Sonnet had the Rocket in one of their enclosures at their booth. They claim it's solid. Said to be shipping end of May. Special drivers should not be needed for anything.

The next camera build adds support for RGB curves in camera.. and in camera modification of those curves :)

Brave men! :)
Looking foreward to the next bunch of "why does my footage look noisy" set of explanations... :)

R1 will get a firmware update to add RC3/RG3 soon. We love the R1.. it is what started this all.

OK.. time to go eat.

Good. RG3 will probably work well for on-set matching of the new and older crops of REDs

Similar pixel size of 5 microns remember... so your 4K will be slightly smaller than MX 4K. 5K will be a but smaller than MX 5K. and 6K will be a bit bigger. Bigger.. but still be able to fit some of the S35 lenses that have a larger image circle out there.

What size is the image circle for full sensor coverage (2:1)? Wondering if my LDS UPs will cover.

Jarred will the Projector Beable to be Shoot from the rear???

-Will HDR-X be possible at 4k with Dragon and Scarlet?
-Will be possible to shoot 5k,4k,3k,2k and 1k without cropping with Dragon?

-Will be possible to shoot 5k,4k,3k,2k and 1k without cropping with Dragon?

Only the people at RED know for sure, but with the information given so far we can expect, Yes on 4k HDRx with Dragon on Scarlet since they're going to be upgrading the support boards in the camera as well.

And for the second question, same deal, only people at RED know, but based on how its always been and how its likely to always be, RED will not include line skipping in any of their products because it does not lend itself to great images. So no, cropping will be required to change resolutions.
