Quentin Tarantino says why he wants to quit making movies.
"I can't stand all of this digital stuff, this is not what I signed up for" (Video)

I'd say the "Film" business left him behind first. ;-) Though have to say, I can't wait to see his new one.

Kevin

Well, he won't be missed. Gosh, is he able to make a movie for adults ?

Kristin

PS : if all these famous directors who claimed to leave the business did it for real, it would be great, it would leave the place for others

First he says "I think the whole digital projection thing killed it for me." I want to use film.... Then says "If I do something epic again I will do a HBO miniseries."

My grandfather would say "he is taking out both sides of his mouth".

The reactions and the look from the other directors sums it up. Seems to me like Quentin is tapped out and using the digital revolution as an excuse to let himself out the back door. I respect the guy for what he has done for cinema, but I'm a little surprised with his commentary on the future. Content is still king and I'm glad he'll still write.

I wish I could say this bothered me, but it just doesn't. I agree with Kristin... he really doesn't make films for adults anymore. They're so over the top, and so outlandish, they simply become ridiculous!

Just like SLR imaging... you either grow with the times, or you get left behind. I guess that's true with life... can one imagine if someone said "I won't live in a house with air-conditioning!" (Hey, I'm in Phoenix, so that's a good one!), or I refuse to use these electric/battery operated cameras... I only want to hand crank.

Digital projectors are NOT "public TV" as he suggests... They are still higher quality than those at home. The sound is generally better... I also find it interesting that his films find their way to pay per view, subscribed channels, plus DVD and BluRay... I guess he's not a "purist" in that sense... oh no, gotta make that money. I believe he's trying to act "cool" by being a "film guy." Once his bank account drains he'll be onto the next movie... one can only hope he actually gets back to make quality films instead of the same type of thing over and over.

Yeah what does doing a mini series or a long form of storytelling differ when telling in film versus digital?! He claims he's doesn't like this digital era of making films and in that case rather do television to tell a longer story. Hell, he could have done that years ago when film was around. Has nothing to do with the medium. It has to do with storytelling and the product. He wants to creat a longer more fulfilling product of storytelling. Obviously he doesn't like digital but then again he'll do a longer digital product cause film is dead?

Sad he has this sort of stance instead of embracing the technology and seeing the advantages it offers to the industry. If he wants to shoot on film he still can, it just isn't going to be as available as it has been in the past.

I for one enjoy Robert Rodriguez's work more and he embraced the digital filmmaking process a long time ago - kudos to you Robert and thanks for all your movies Quentin..hopefully sometime in the future he'll see how bad his comments come off and see that digital really isn't that bad after all.

I am very good friends with David Worth, He is the Director of "Kickboxer" with Jean Claude Van Damme and was the DP on "BLOODSPORT" and 2 films for Clint Eastwood and is now 70 something years old. Its interesting, we were just talking about this the other day how many of his colleagues can't seem to progress with the times. They are fighting the technology instead of embracing it.

Many of them are out of work because they refuse to except the way the industry has taken new strides in technology. David however, has embraced it and Im happy to report that he is doing great and now teaching others at UCLA FILM SCHOOL how to re adapt to the new times! He is a perfect example of "flowing with the times" in our industry.

If Mr. Tarantino wants to stop making films, thats his choice but I think that just opens up the door for NEW "film" makers to fill the void. Funny thing is, He couldn't even go back to his OLD job at BLOCKBUSTER VIDEO.....The new technology has eliminated the need for that company into extinction!! lol

I really hated the first generation of digital projectors that showed up in cinemas and back when the last 3 Star Wars movies were coming out I couldn't imagine even considering shooting digital. My first film was 35mm Panavision and I was as much a "purist" as one could be.

RED changed that.

Now I can't imagine going back to shooting on film and the digital projectors in theaters now are mostly top notch. In fact it often looks better than film projection.

He seems awfully young to be a dinosaur.

No wonder REDUSER gets a bad reputation.

1. Let's see some links to your films where you have JUST ONE SCENE that beats, say, a Christoph Waltz scene in Inglorious Basterds. Or shut up about his directing prowess.

2. Let's see one film shot on RED with skin tones as good as those in Tarantino's films.

3. The guy puts his money where his mouth is and runs an art theatre at a loss in LA showing film prints... I saw Badlands there and it looked a damn sight better than the pixelated garbage that AMC calls IMAX. Or what you see if you walk into one of the average screens at the Arclight.

If anyone wants to start your own digital theatre with better projection than Tarantino's then by all means let us know.

But yeah, on average things just aren't there yet. I'm not saying they won't be in the future - and obviously Tarantino should consider backing superior digital technology instead of holding on to film.

But I mean Red just announced their 4K distribution platform based on Rec.709... which has a terrible gamut compared to film. This is the "better future" ?!

I don't understand why the projectors are an issue as I feel the Barco and Christie projectors are beautiful but he has his own set of standards that who am i to argue. Don't forget that be has shot digital in the scene in Sin City he directed for Rodriguez. It's obviously an aesthetic choice he prefers as well as the history of Cinema which is very important to him. I think he just wants to be associated with a specific moment in time and even he says himself that it's a young mans game. I interpret that as "I'm not a young man anymore and therefore don't think I can truly relate any longer with the style of storytelling that people have come to expect from me so therefore it's almost time to pack it up". Like a great fighter he wants to go out on top not slowly fade away. I respect that and his opinions on film vs digital even if I don't fully agree with his point of view.
And, lets face it the guy has done more with his career than 99.9% of the filmmaking population, and his opinion must count for something. But the disrespectful posts aren't warranted IMO.

Sorry, can't say that I'd rank him over David Fincher, Ridley Scott or Peter Jackson.

I thought content was supposed to be everything. Apparently not for Tarantino

EDIT: But I kinda understand that because shooting RED is easy, and I could never shoot film... and I hate the way 1080 pea shooters look in post.

Sure - then let David Fincher, Ridley Scott or Peter Jackson post juvenile attacks on REDUSER. They have earned it. But they don't because they are classy and have better things to do.

EDIT: But I kinda understand that because shooting RED is easy, and I could never shoot film...

Why could you never shoot film? What if the story needs it?

Of course if it were easy to pull of a filmic, Tarantino aesthetic on RED, shoot on RED. But at the moment there is a huge gap in that kind of content when you narrow it down to RED films.

The RED-shot projects by Fincher, Scott and Jackson all have aesthetic sensibilities that play into the current strengths and weaknesses of digital. RED fits the stories they want to tell at the moment, so they are supporters. They also can see that it will improve in the future, so they are supporters of that too.

When the quality of RED acquisition improves, I'm sure it will find more fans. But personally I don't want every film to be like Fincher, Scott and Jackson's RED projects. That's way too narrow a definition of the art form.

I don't believe that is true. That is what the home REDRay model designed for connecting to large 4k lcd tvs is capable of outputting. The .RED file format stores more information. As soon as you set up a projector in your house which will most likely be a $10k REDRay projector you loose that limitation.
