  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Quad charger flashing red/green

Are there any positive stories of these quad chargers working without issues?...

After a couple years of intermittent use, my experience with the Quad Charger and the smaller RedVolts has been positive overall. I have had the red/green flashing light failure happen before, but it's not something that happens all the time and it's always worked out in the end. I get the same failure with the Travel Chargers as well, but in those cases cooling the RedVolt down first has always solved it. Having the Quad Charger and a couple of Travel Chargers as back up might be a good idea if using the smaller RedVolts. Unfortunately there's no Travel Charger for the XL Redvolts that could be used in the same way. I'd like to think there's some recharging procedure/trick to follow for having the QuadCharger work reliably 100% of the time, but even if such a thing is possible, I've never had to try and figure it out.

I had the issue with XL's on both our Quad chargers and I had one of them replaced. Still this happens from time to time. Pulling out the power cable out of the charger and reseating it again one or a few times and reseating the batteries / letting them cool down usually solves it.. but it's kind of a hackwack process if you ask me. A charger and batteries at the given price for XL's and the quad charger should simply just work. When I rent out the gear clients get's issues with it and it does not really serve the RED reputation that well to have cronic issues with chargers and batteries so I think red should look into this and try to make a fix for it. I'm guessing that the trouble comes from batteries that goes to 0% and then have problems taking charge, I don't know much about batteries but that's what I been told by people that knows more over at the rental house I go to. So to avoid having these problems I try to swap batteries before the camera shut down. And especially I try to do so when running with accessories that adds to the drain even after the camera shuts down.

And yes I did not have any issues when I was only using volts and no XL's.

I bough a Vlock module but I really like the formfactor of the XL module and the XL batteries but if this does not get resolved I think I might go over to using bricks, or actually something with an extra power port as the power outake of the Vlock module and +1 module is quite limited.

Three parts, battery, charger, local power are in the mix. Excluding one after the other might help to find out what causes it.

Are you getting the red/green blinking lights as well while it is on an UPS? (Uninterruptible Power Source)

I had it only once, while a heater was on the same circuit (no UPS), and the heater switched on and off.

So far, I use it since a half year and I'm fine. I had that with travel chargers frequently...

I have the same issue with two quad chargers. One of them was replaced and still has the issue from time to time. It is a shame because I like the form factor of the xl's and redvolts.

I now got this problem on all my 8 XLs and both quad charger... its my 2nd and 3rd quad charger, yes something needs to be done...

My personal experience was that the Quad Charger worked fine with the normal RedVolts, but that the XL batteries, within a couple weeks, caused the charger to fail. I had this happen with four successive Quad Chargers before switching to V-mount.

Had this sometimes with one or two of my standard REDVOLTs. When this happened i just popped them into the travel charger. That one finished the charging with a green light.
The REDVOLTs got uncharged in my Scarlet and after that charged just fine in the Quad Charger.

...until it happened again. ;)

Just got a friend of mine all setup with a new Scarlet Dragon and a brand new Quad Charger with XL and normal Red Volt. Flashing lights on the (cold) XL's are still an issue in brand new quad chargers apparently. Very frustrating, anyone find a different fix then unplugging and reseating the batteries?

Edit: looks like the problem only plagues the XL red volts, side handle ones are working.

Looks like although the revolt XL have flashing lights 90% of the time when plugged in, they are still charging. I can try to reseat, unplug, and replug them initially and no luck with getting orange charge lights to come on. But after leaving them in there for the time it takes to charge them, I can reseat them and they are green an all charged up...

I have two quad chargers, 2 XL's, and 4 regular REDvolts - ALL of them suffer from this problem. Intermittent trouble even with batteries that have been sitting on the bench overnight.

I've reached the point where I no longer use them on client shoots; the sound of panic from client when the video goes down for a battery change is preferable to the pressure of possibly not being able to make it through the day with 'volts.

Perhaps the new 'Weapon' body architecture will render these Batts obsolete anyway?

My Quad charger developed this issue at around month 4/5 and didn't notice the issue until we were on location with 4 "charged" XL's. We realized there was a problem after popping off the first XL and the replacement only lasted 5 min, popped a second one on and same... I just submitted a RMA ticket and am leaving for a job in Taiwan in 9 days. YAY hopeful that I won't have to buy another charger.

Quad Charger problems...

Quad Charger problems...

I get the flashing Green/red lights as well but batteries are not charging while that is going on. Sometimes plugging and unplugging helps but now not so much. Failure 75% of the time. I'm surprised that this hasn't been officially addressed. Expensive for a charger that constantly fails. Put in a ticket today. We'll see what happens.

I had the same issue with my original Quad charger. I originally used it to charge both single RedVolts and XLs before it flashed Red/Green after a couple of uses.

When I got the Quad RMA'd and received the new new unit I only used it to charge XLs exclusively and have not had a problem (cross fingers) for nearly a year. I use the travel chargers for the single RedVolts and Quad for XLs only.
