I wonder what goes on in the minds of a respected cinematographer like Roger Deakins. Another year and another Oscar nomination and another miss. What would he be thinking? Does he crave for such an award?

Or are we fans more thinking about these things than the master himself? I wonder what drives him. Is he above all this and just thinking about creating more art?

Well, David Lynch hasn't yet won an Oscar. Hitchcock never won an Oscar - only a lifetime achievement award or something. But I don't think they really care as much as we do. Lynch deserves to be known as an Oscar-winning director, but I think he cares more about his next project.

I can pretty much assure you that Roger puts more stock in the respect he receives from his peers. We'll never know what he really thinks of the Oscars unless he comes out and says what he feels, but the feeling of respect he gets from fellow cinematographers, actors, directors, etc. probably means a lot to him. If he never won an Oscar, he would still be considered one of the great cinematographers of all time.

He's an A-list cinematographer who has the luxury of being able to pick and choose his projects, he's accepted as a close collaborator by some of the biggest-name directors in the world, and makes big, big money. I would also bet he's still a very happy man. All of these things are worth far more than awards.

Wow! This link has got his views. Awesome. Quoting Roger Deakins below:
"I work as a cinematographer because I love doing that and I love filmmaking. And you know, the Oscars are a celebration of filmmaking. Anything further than that doesn't really make sense to me".

"There's some great work out there, some great cinematography that doesn't get nominated in that category. In the same way, there was a great Russian cinematographer Vadim Yusov ["Solaris", "Andre's Childhood"]. He never got nominated for an Oscar! But then, nor did Kazuo Miyagawa ["Rashomon", "Yojimbo"], you know, the great cinematographer who shot for Kurosawa. He probably produced more work than most cinematographers, frankly, and probably inspired most of us. So you can't really judge".
