  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Proxy Module...

Can the proxy module stream the "live feed" (camera recording or not) as well as have "takes" playable off the HTML server?

How much delay in a live stream?

Don't know yet but our target is as low as possible. Obviously, this also depends on a number of things related to the wireless devices, decoding speed, bitrate, and inbetween frames.

1) What is the limit of simultaneous streams that the module can handle?

2) In addition to "live streaming", can you stream any clip from a CF card? Multiple clips? Is this managed by a web interface?

3) Is there an open API to be able to write our own interfaces for this?

4) Does the streaming server support time displacement so you can jump to a point in a timeline? ie: start=XXX

5) I'm wondering if Red has plans for using modules like this beyond the camera itself? for instance, the ability to drop this module on the Red Station in some way, and have it transcode media while copying between storage devices? That could be just as huge from a workflow perspective especially where its not practical to have this module on the camera itself.

6) Can the module be used off the camera to provide access to stored media? ie: Stream clips from a Red Station.

7) In places where em interference or lots or network traffic make wifi impractical, can we assume streaming access is also available over gigabit ethernet?

Good questions. I can't go into details about most of the questions because I know they will change.

#7: yes, the ethernet on the module can be used for streaming.

Okay, I expected too much in the wrong direction then, great to hear about other modules and I forgot about H.264 being useful for rushes on mobile devices. We are so used to handling proxies from the raw R3D. Probably I got misled by the word "proxy".

Opps, maybe I was right?
Avide Media Composer 5 supports EOS H.264 and AMA rewritten to support formats natively. Can Media Composer 5 work with Proxy module's H.264 with metadata and XML?

Streaming is excellent, but having h264 in cf isnt usefull in my opinion. I'd prefer to pay a bit more and have a module that streams in h264 AND records in prores/DNxHD in the same time, not 2 different modules.

Let's not forget that best editing will be done realtime in many platforms and apps that open R3Ds natively. Best use of H.264 will be for wireless on set viewing and dailies if you don't own a RED Rocket™ (you should BTW).

However... there will be plenty more surprises along the way.

I'm not sure if Red will be able to do a ProRes module. That requires them to get into bed with Apple. And last time I checked Red doesn't get into bed with anyone because they are "The Rebellion" and like going it alone redefining everything as they go.

Arri on the other hand is known for their collaboration with other companies: Zeiss, S.two, Codex, Keisoku Giken, Fujinon, Sony, and Apple. I'm sure I'm missing a few too. Red doesn't have these kind of relationships with anyone really...

Apple owns at least one RED ONE and they love shooting RED. I am led to believe they have a strong relationship and there is a lot of mutual respect. You are just blowing smoke.

EDIT: Actually, I think is it two REDs.

Apple is holding a suite at hotel conference room during NAB. They clearly say new software and hardware to show.

Apple hardware rumors

Good to know. Any details? Where did you hear this?

Apple may be planning to use NAB to announce updated MacBook Pro models. I could see a Final Cut Studio update being announced as well (especially with all the cameras RED and others are announcing)

MacBook rumor here.

Thanks. I hope they will say something about updating the Mac Pro as well.

Apple announcement...

Apple announcement...

I heard from a technician of an Apple Certified Repair Center that very soon they will announce the 3 quad-core (12 cores!) Mac Pro. Not more details, though... :emote_22_yikes:

we're about to order a red rocket, which i'm pumped about.

down the line there will obviously be a ProRes module.. will having the ProRes module negate the need to a red rocket for non-native workflows? Will this module record full debayered ProRes HQ on the fly? won't be a complete substitute for the red rocket, but might be a good alternative for some people.

Proprietary ethernet connection? I would say that is a bad decision guys.

I second it looks beautiful and if we can really stream a decent quality image to iPads and such, that rocks.

I also second Jay's comment above.

Cheers,
Damien
