  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Prometheus...

"Your Amazon.com order of "Prometheus (Blu-ray 3D/ Bl..." has shipped!" WOOT !

I have all ready been watching Prometheus on my higher resolution ipad ... actually looks perty good on the ipad but not very immersive . I also want the blu-ray for the added material.

Also, in a wider context, I am going through a bit of emotional debate on projecting it. The 16:9 fills my room way better then the 2.4, also Prometheus imax 3D was 1.66 or 2.0 aspect ratio. The 2.4 ratio is only 858 pixels high through the blu-ray ... which when you spread it wide on the projector that is 15 feet wide with that real crisp with blu-ray algorithm (i.e. not doing the dcp jpeg2k circle fuzzyness) ... kinda looks a bit icky. From a kind of old school viewpoint, I prefer the 1.66 aspect ratio in my projector room but I can't get Prometheus at high resolution in that format(lmao ... I'm hoping Ridley will do a 4k Prometheus I when Prometheus II comes out, possibly update the sound a bit too?).

As a side note, since i'm using Prometheus as my major reference point for my own film(I mentally compare my film to Prometheus as I watch my dailies being projected - it's sometimes depressing), I am rethinking 2.4 as a standard format for home laser systems in favor of 16:9 ( 2.4 doesn't fit most rooms very well ... and that 858 bit resolution is a hard pill to take). Also doing a DI that is the superset of 2.4, 2.0, and 16:9 (i.e. 2592x1080 so i don't have to uprez the 2.4 to get a 16:9), is just a bit too non-standard for my workflow. hmmm ... hmmm???

I felt bored, somehow it never really got to me. Visually astounding though, it makes me proud to own the same sensor. It also enlightened me to see so much darkness without noise, at least on a 35mm print

oh there's noise in the movie, lots of it. Couple possibly be a film grain effect too, but you can see it. Still looks good with the noise IMO.

Far better movie than people give it credit for... sad actually, we defend the atrocious and knock the ambitious. The reality is nothing is perfect and this movie is far from it, but unfortunately I feel people are far to hard on it but ah well to each their own. Oh and red letter media has a horrible perspective on the quality of movies upon thorough examination, give me any sci fi or future tech (or sudo intelligent) movie and I will tear it apart just as bad as he does, but why... far to many back seat directors and negative Nancy's these days. I find it funny how movie's like inception and avatar are applauded and defended to the death but Prometheus is torn apart.

mah to each their own, I loved it, had some plot holes and annoying character moments but what movie doesn't, my main issue was the cliched dialogue but in a corny old school sci fi way it worked for didn't for some ah well.

Stay passionate

My question for everyone that chooses to bash films is this: where are yours? What theatre or rental place can I pick up a copy of your work? How many people saw your film, and what's the gross earnings?

Whether you liked this or that film or not, the fact of the matter is that the arts reach us on an individual level that most other people and things (even our closest relationships) can't.

If you know what makes a great plot or great dialogue, then show all of us.

Haha, fair point. Its so much easier to sit back, from the safety of a computer, and lay summary judgement on a movie...than to trudge up the mountain, and make one yourself. Sometimes, we all vicariously WISH we could be a great film maker like Ridley, and so...maybe in a moment of fantasy...we judge him harshly as if we too...are great film-makers...?

Hey...we can all dream, right...?

Huge thing which I admire about Ridley is how much he gives back to the community explaining his workflow, so we can make better movies. I got the blu-ray today and it has over 7 hours of info in it, with TONS of story board and process info.

I btw really like watching the French version of Prometheus, they did a awesome ADR job, voice actors are great (French version has a more informal conversational feel then the English version, kind of like the original Alien).

I am a great fan of Ridley Scott and I can say this is not his best. I am talking as a movie goer, I don't have to make a film to understand when I get bored. In fact I am entitled to say what I felt through the movie even if I were at the lowest level of the cinema industry, that's the beauty about art, it's democratic. This is a film perfect in form, yet, I did not feel engaged, but that's me.

The look and the sets of Prometheus really shines in 1.66, the weapon vault had a really high ceiling and was framed to show expansive height, also the surgical abortion sequence was vertical in its action. One shot in particular shines in 1.66 3D, the Alien warship crashing and crushing Charlize, it made me want to stop renting the Alexa and talk my clients into the Epic, but we have gotten addicted to Prores 4444 in camera (the Meizler module is going to be a game changer).

um... I think it's rather quite the opposite way around. why would anyone let lindelof continue working on scripts after they've (hopefully) seen what he did to lost (last season)? but I guess it's a question of priorities. the movie is visually stunning and has great vfx, that seems to be good enough for most people as we've seen with avatar. I myself prefer just a little more substance to the story.

as for your question about the whereabouts of my movies... I live in switzerland, there's no real film industry there and I have no intention of trying to make it in hollywood.

Just for those who are curious, a lot of the questions or "holes" in the story are filled in in the deleted scenes. Why the hell did they cut them?! They answer pretty much everything haha. It also develops the character of Vickers and the Captain which is nice.

nice to know. :)

Good for a laugh maybe. "The girl with the dragon in her couchee" sure.

Does it answer any of my questions, none.

There is a lot to this movie, the more I search and ask questions, the more I come to understand people have dismissed the plot and story quickly and might have missed the deeper "questions" this movie asks. I am still asking.

I'll have to check those out.

It happened with Kingdom of Heaven too, huge chunks missing until the director's cut. Ridley should be allowed to make his long films...
