  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Prometheus...

2012 will be a year for RED to remember forever...

Jim

i think he took a very smart decision by not making a Blade runner sequel (and prequel as planned), his thoughts was always to come up with something fresh on all the levels, one more interesting thing about him is regardless of how advanced are the CGI now, he is always the "shoot it real" school.
really can't wait to see the film (and others shot on RED) on the big screen.

P.S: the hobbit announcement trailer is expected to be released today! 2012 is gonna be a very interesting year for RED and for film making.

Great accomplishment! Visual story telling at its best combined with Epic imagery. Can't wait to see the trailer!

Jim

I'm so happy for you and RED. It must be like Chirstmas morning to get to be on some of these sets and know that some of your favorite filmmakers are using a camera you created.

Im all for seeing people realize even their tiniest dreams.

Way to go.

David

Congratulations mr. Jannard. Both Blade Runner and Alien are films that are even more brilliant than they understand themselves :p

To get the director of such films to embrace your system must be an amazing experience. I also bow for getting Fincher onboard, as he perhaps is the closest i can think of as a modern Kubrick, and a brilliant visual story teller.

Unfortunately, accomplishments like this will not change the mind of the common Arri-snob. But that will turn out as a fantastic opportunity for the rest of us...

For Red shooters, users, and supporters this is turning out to be an amazing week. 4k feature release. Two major motion pictures releasing their trailers both shot in Epic 3D. A lot of beautiful work to look at coming up.

"If only I could see what Ridley've seen with your eyes!"

Jannard, with true Masters like Scott going RED, Your work is becoming personal to me.

Blade Runner is my favorite movie. Alien is all world. To have Prometheus "Shot on RED" is such an honor.

Watch.

Jim

This is soo good, I am proud to be onboard for the RED experience!

I had the great pleasure to meet Ridley on set of Prometheus in Iceland and then spend time with him in Hollywood. He is an incredible personality. I was so happy that he was thrilled at how Prometheus looked. It made my day/month/year/life. :-)

Jim

Heh. Hope you enjoyed the country, I've been there a few times now and am a confirmed Icelandophile. I'll be shooting in the same location, as and when Hekla erupts - and she's primed, inflated and ready, she could go any day now. Or next year... you never know. Nasty dangerous volcano - gives virtually no notice: quakes start, within 30-60 minutes she's in full eruption. Webcam: http://eldgos.mila.is/hekla/

"Game of Thrones" was also shooting in Iceland recently, on Katla volcano - us volcanophiles saw the lights of their set on the Katla webcam. Alexa for them I think.

Can't wait for this movie as well, look forward to it!!

2012 will be a year for RED to remember forever...

Jim

I can only imagine what a great filling must be to know the insane amount of Movies Shot on RED will come out on Shot on EPIC
and also considering the Sizable budget spent on them as a total, CONGRATS!!

But Christmas of 2012 our first Movie, Shot on EPIC, will also be out, so 2012 will also for sure be an year to
remember for me as well, and in more of a way thanks in part to you and RED... ;)

Obvious question for JIM…

So when do you and Ridley get to watch Prometheus on a RED 4k laser projector in RED Laser 3d?

Cheers,

Eric

I can't wait to see this movie. As an assistant photographer in the mid 1980's I was very fortunate to assist Annie Leibovitz as her second assistant when she was in the UK. We spent two days shooting Ridley for Vanity Fair. The first day was on the set of 'Legends', where I still struggle to get my head around the fact that we were there while they were shooting the snow scenes and would helicopter in fully grown pine trees as the ones on set 'died'. Annie was so blown away by the whole set. It was huge and very magical. Anyone who has seen the film will know what I mean when you think this was not on location but in a studio at Pinewood. I remember one point when they were about to turn over and Ridley said 'stop, we need to move that bank of 10k's 10' right'. Hanging from the roof it took three hours to move them and he then walked up to the monitor said 'perfect' and the day began. At that time I could see no difference (I would now!) but we were all, including Annie just blown away by his attention to detail.

Day 2 and we spent the day with him shooting at his house. A dining room that was just straight out of one of his movies. The most amazing chandeliers hovering over the dining table. Every part of the house lit to perfection.

I was in my element, working with my hero. Bladerunner was my favourite film and is still certainly in my top 5. Fantastic pictures - Vanity Fair loved them. How did it all end?

I got told off by Annie for talking to him too much. But that was short lived - Annie took all us assistants to Mr Chow's, which back then was one of the finest restaurants in London. We drank Crystal champagne and laughed the night away! Those were great days unencumbered by the financial gloom of today!

Lets not also forget that Ridley (via RSA) was the chosen director by Steve Jobs for Apple's groundbreaking commercial.

Added to that maybe, just maybe there is more than meets the eye between Prometheus and Alien (and Apple)?

Whatever way you look at it, Jim's comments hold true. I would add that 'visually' he is probably the finest director dead or alive the 20th Century has seen. Plus lets not forget Tony, his brother. How desperate were all of us to be Wolf (or any pilot) in Top Gun?

Iain thanks for sharing the stories…

It’s funny about the trees dying. My old man was an art director on Empire Strikes back, that was going on at EMI about the same time… In that situation my father was going completely mental over the number of bloody trees that they had to build for the swamp scenes with Yoda… They just thought Lucas had totally lost it and the trees were carrying on (as I remember it) beyond and out the stage door. At some point a back drop has to kick in, but I think Lucas wanted to go the extra mile to make it a convincing environment. They spent an absolute fortune on fake swamp trees… You just don’t figure that that is going to make a massive hole in the budget… “More trees…!”.

I also got to do some work at Bray Studios in the later mid 80’s and there was this myth about the classic alien bursting out of Hurt’s chest and abdomen and that the cast was not warned (obviously apart from Hurt) so that they could get a genuine scared reaction caught on film, while chicken guts and blood etc. was doing its thing. I don’t know if that’s true or not…?

I think also that RED having a presence at Pinewood is wonderful, and really hoping fingers crossed that Pinewood goes from strength to strength. I am hearing very encouraging things that I hope to check out first hand in 2012.

I assume Jim on his 2012 Tour will make a stop in Pinewood (Iver Heath) too?

Nice One!

Eric

Blade runner is one of my favorite movies too… my late Father was also a production designer on some notable movies and when he saw Blade Runner he felt very sorry for the production designer as you couldn’t see any of the sets as it was so dim and dingy most of the time… So it’s funny that sometimes a production designer or art director has rather different take on “lighting”; back then so much craftsmanship went into every detail.. I hope to see more of a return to that way of thinking slightly over CG (In some cases).

Really looking forward to seeing very juicy texture and detail in S-3d for Prometheus in 4k no less.

Fingers crossed this reinforces “Good” S-3d and makes it a super worthwhile experience.
