  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Prometheus...

With any story that demands suspension of disbelief, after the audience has done it once, then further events in the story need to follow that initial story logic. Sadly, Prometheus didn't do that.

First Weekend Revenue:

Madagascar 3 = $60M
Prometheus = $50M

Well . . . there ya go!

I could just watch Noomi Repace for weeks on end. Somehow the emotion of the film seemed lacking. Not sure why hollywood insists on putting these perfect model women ( Charlize Theron) in roles where they are suppose to be physically threatening. It is a fetish that seems to have no end. Technically the film is a thoroughbred, the 3d was awesome and I hate 3d.

She looks like a model because she's not human...

My point was that there seem to be a bunch of people saying - "this was random and that was random". The fact is that nothing is random in Ridley's world. Whether or not people are interested in looking deeper is their own business.

I read this though as "I didn't understand the movie either, but it's Ridley Scott so... obviously I'm missing something, because Ridley Scott can't make a bad movie."

The simpler explanation is that Ridley worked with a writer who is infamous for writing nonsense and made a bad movie full of nonsense. It happens to the best. And if *nobody* can figure out what Ridley deliberately was trying to say then it's a bad movie for failing to communicate. Confusion does not equate depth. There was more depth to Transformers 2--people just didn't assume there was some hidden meaning to all of the plot holes.

I once screwed up a shot and it got featured on the front page of Gizmodo. There were conspiracy theories in the comments that it was an homage to 9/11 and all sorts of insanity. The truth was I fucked up a render pass. :P

Lets pause this Prometheus conversation for a minute... I think we might have found a story more interesting...

Do share.

So now Gavin's "fuck up" and its responses reflect on interpretations of Prometheus? Does one "insane" and unrelated theory have any bearing on other theories? There is more to the world than what passes through that narrow strip called gavinland.

I loved the film but the 3D killed it for me. Incredible lighting and the shots were amazing but I thought the 3D was pretty poor. Ghosting in every other shot and some of the FX heavy shots like the EXT scenes during the storm were un-watchable in 3D. Maybe it was because it was IMAX 3D?

The first time I tried to see it the computer running the compression of the 3D file crashed and they had to cancel the showing. At least I will be able to go see Dark Knight Rises in IMAX for free!

I can't wait to see Prometheus again next week in 2D.

Really? Come on dude, I love me some Michael Bay...but give Prometheus some credit. TR2 doesn't even TRY. It's just FLUFF. Prometheus is TRYING. You may not like the shit it's selling, but it's trying really hard to be a GOOD MOVIE. That's obvious in every frame.

Prometheus has ambitions, Dark Night style, but leaves us all wanting a bit.

Maybe because the 9/11 Bush themes of Dark Night were more relatable...and the death/creation/Oedipus themes of Prometheus are more abstract, more personal.

The fact that Prometheus has engendered so much discussion I think illustrates the scope of it's ambitions...how tantalizingly great this movie almost was.

I read this though as "I didn't understand the movie either, but it's Ridley Scott so... obviously I'm missing something, because Ridley Scott can't make a bad movie."

And please...no one for a second can possibly think Ridley can't make a bad movie. Has anyone seen Robin Hood? Its like a bad, made for TV movie. It's legitimately terrible. Name me ONE great movie he's made since Black Hawk Down? He's been coasting for over a decade...until NOW.

That must be one terrible theater. I have seen it in Imax 3D and regular 3D and it looked great. The best 3D I have seen.

My guess is it was your theaters issue because even people who despise 3D have been talking about how good it was.

Yeah could be. Which is funny because they have Prometheus playing on 4x 3D screens and 1x 2D screen and the 2D screenings are sold out for days while the IMAX 3D theatre I sat in 3 days after release had dozens of empty seats. The image quality was absolutely terrible. Not sure if anyone else saw it at Scotiabank Theatre in Toronto this weekend, maybe it was just me? I wonder if because of the crashes the day before they lowered the quality of the compression or something?

I was genuinely surprised at how bad the 3D was because all I had heard about was how great it is supposed to be. I know Darius has lots of experience shooting big 3D films, that was the whole reason I even gave the 3D a chance in the first place. I've tried.. I've really tried to enjoy 3D but I just can't get into it. There's nothing attractive about a close up in 3D for me, and then I pay $20 to get the worst projection I've seen in years. In this case, it really kind of ruined the magic of the film for me and I now HAVE to pay again to see it in 2D.

I can't even imagine how much more ass Prometheus would kick if it was shot in 70mm IMAX instead of digital 3D :D

...
Gavin's thrilling sequel to Prometheus:

"Bob sat in the chair."
"The large orange fire..."
"... and that was the best day of his life when..."
"... Prometheus notched an arrow--"
"--her screams rang out--"
"--And tha----to they sought--"
"42"

SFBLOL... I just spit my chai all over the table... That's awesome!

movies are hard...but for this website and thread... EPIC absolutely delivered some of the most delicious digital footage ever captured and screened in 2K

and forgive me RED but in Bridgeport, Togard, Oregon. The Stadium Seating ImAx 3D was stunning and the SOUND WAS FUCKING EARTH SHAKING!!! - when the Prometheus thrusters ignite on landing. HOLY MOTHER OF GOD was that a movie going moment my seats and flesh were pounded by base. unreal.

Syrupy smooth visuals. crisp resolution, shadowy and inky blacks and these were early early EPIC cameras that kicked some serious ass on this film.

The rest was a lot like that messy black stuff. me no likey.

I much preferred ACID FOR BLOOD... and ASH and BISHOP obsession with the PERFECT organism was far cooler than David's
earlier more neurotic (pre-fixed) android quibbling "big things have small beginnings" -

I loved the film and I think everyone complaining about the open endedness needs to take a step back and look at reality, something which is ALWAYS open ended and appreciate the mysteries that life (and films) might throw at you. I like that I had to read plot analysis after the film to learn more. I look forward to seeing it again, and though I might be biased because its such a good series, don't we have another two films to watch before Alien to technically tie up all these loose ends? I think a lot of the plot issues will be resolved and for the ones that don't come to a neat black and white ending, s'way she goes mate...interpret your hearts away! Plus regardless of love of the plot we should all support it simply for the excellent camera choice... Its good to see high end stuff shooting Red, makes me happy to be a fanboy...

If the goal isn't to tell a story then you can just point a camera at some scenery and let it run. Which is fine. But that's different from what we generally define as a "story". There's plenty of room in the world for open ended non-narrative work. Tom Lowe just put out a nice one recently. But he comes back and tells me that Timescapes is an epic sci-fi film about time travelers I'm going to call bullshit. ;)

"The story is all taking place behind the rocks."

Lol nice one Gavin... and Al that link was truly hysterical. I do hope some of the plot ties together at some point... but with another 2 films between this and Alien I am sure at least some of this will happen...

At least one can hope...

I'm sure you are not holding your breath Brian. Scott said this was not an Alien prequel so it isn't meant to be historical. If I understand him correctly the stories are not likely to tie together because they apparently were never meant to. Perhaps this was meant to be a story from a mythical past as it would be told within the Alien universe.
