  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Prometheus...

Sorry but you must not be using CS6...
I can playback 1/2 debayer 5 k on my laptop...no scrubbing issue....at all
Also for same image resolution debayering increases file size...as you are dealing with 3 rgb values per pixel instead of 1, and reds wavelet encoding is very efficient....in fact with identical image resolution I challenge you to find a format that would be smaller file size to r3d...even degrading the image to 8 bits you would have an extremely hard time. Debayering would therefore triple file size even with a wavelet codec...not to mention you now need 2 versions of the material not including redundancy...
Editing raw is here....I have been doing it via cineform for 4 years, now adobe/red have got it down to a science

I prefer edit 1920x1080 DNxHD 36 (debayered at half-good) on my old laptop instead of working with R3D.
They are 20 times lighter then R3D, cheaper to backup and you can store them in a cheap 1.8" usb drive.
Then, I insist, EDL and relink to R3D.

I've to wait a couple of months to watch this film in theaters =/

Andrew, you seem to not understand that "I'd like to see you do better!" is a horrible argument.

Just defending a film that is getting way more flack than it deserves. One of the reasons why I don't have much respect for movie critics is because they love to criticize the work of others without producing anything of their own (other than their often BS movie reviews). Putting together a film is extremely difficult work and believe me, the people who worked on this film poured thousands of hours of work and probably got very little sleep putting this thing together only for people to slam it like it was made by bunch of film school dropouts. It was not a phenomenal film but it is no where near as bad as people are claiming. Yes, the script is a bit rough around the edges. Yes, I could have used another revision or even another writer to polish it up a bit but there were some interesting concepts that we don't see too often and it showed a level of ambition that is seldom seen. Inception was quite similar, problematic at times but unique.

watched last night and thought it was a technical and visual marvel. I have no complaint with the story other than they give so many things that i would have loved for them to go deeper in to for explanation. I was left craving much more and questioning lots. Which im ok with. I wish i could have learned more about the characters or maybe if they each has more charisma and been less ambiguous i would have been more satisfied. But i was left with a beautiful taste in my mouth and hey maybe theyll make another where they spend more time talking about what they set up in this one. Its a fine line between packing seats with action and a slow moving in depth movie. They gotta recoup the costs of making it. All in all i applaud the efforts of everyone who got to touch this movie. And hope there is another in the works.

Nice! You wrote my 2001 review! ;) Except I wouldn't even give it 2/10 :P (BTW I love Arthur C Clarke books, the movies are just terrible imo and don't translate to the screen well).

A lot of people say this without realizing the original 2001 book came out after the movie.

2001, Alien and Blade Runner all received mostly negative reviews when they were released and were viewed much more favorably over time. I absolutely think that those films would receive equally negative reviews if not more so if they were released today.

2001 and Alien may have debatable good and bad points and I'm sure in this age of media traffic they would get their share of middling reviews. But IMO nothing in those films is as obviously wrong as the combination of flaws in Prometheus. I was genuinely baffled at points. There's a big difference between having an opinion on what is a good film, what pushes your personal buttons, and having a script that really doesn't make sense. All I can think of is the script went through so many re-writes that things just got a bit more jumbled as it went on. Or of course it could be that those missing chunks are in the script and have simply been cut for pacing purposes. Without them the film does have more problems than most hollywood blockbusters IMO. For me it wasn't as simple as saying I like it or disliked it. I like/dislike many films, but they at least make sense. I enjoyed a lot of Prometheus, but it was so disjointed I left with a dazed feeling, not sure if what I had seen was finished.

Everyone and their speculation... Sure, hitler hates Prometheus. I hate hitler. It started out as a horror film. A B Movie about being trapped in a ship with an alien that is indestructible. It was sent on a spin when a unique and historically relevant visual artist was brought int the mix. what made ALIEN and all from there a bit different is the cinematic projection of horror embodied by a giant phallic beast equipped with vagina dentata all over the place. So what you have is your journey ending in being raped by a giant alien penis with vaginas and more erect phallic weapons equipped with more and more vaginas with teeth and more and more violent erect penetrating foulness, followed by your very essence being absorbed into the proliferation of this obscene and consumate universal rapist which devours and expends all life.

The film is awesome and it totally delivers a new development on the most obscene - it adds what dogmatic folk would consider blasphemy. It's totally rock and roll and a totally enjoyable cinematic experience.

To answer all the questions about facets of the plot I decided to watch other films. What I came out with is that Charles Bronson doesn't seem to be actually playing the harmonica (I play that thing myself), The death star would be prohibitively expensive for the empire to build, and Bill Pullman is not the same person as Balthazar Getty. Oh and dead people don't really get up and eat the living....

Prometheus is amazing. I will watch it over and over again. Next time I will watch it without the 3d.

I so wish I lived in LA today!

Wow! Nailed it! (what I loved about the original Alien and didn't even realize it!)

Actually, god's honest truth, the biggest bummer about Prometheus was the complete lack of giant black penis creatures! All we got was a silent, buff, waxy alien with big pretty eyes. I'm not even mentioning the squid because they're just not scary, they're comical. I want my money' back!!

DNXHD36 is 1/6th the size at 1080p....
i have $130 1.5tb usb 3 external drives that hold 5+hours of 5k...and can edit right off the drives....so it's not like you cant store raw on USB drives....it may be cheaper to backup.....but you still have to backup the RAW right? So now you've added 1/6th more filesize not to mention countless hours of rendering the proxies..
if you are using final cut, I can understand...but online offline is a dying breed as we get modern software and hardware....
not sure what the big 'sin' is editing raw...

I'd like to see you try to write something better. Not a phenomenal script but far from atrocious. I am working on an extensive review that I will post later but I am really trying to figure out why this is such a controversial film. Writing is tough. As a writer, it is quite difficult to put something together that it successful especially when you have everyone and their cousin looking for problems. If films like 2001, Blade Runner or Aliens were released today, they reviews would be equally mixed.

I would have loved to see IMDB posts about 2001 if it were released today, "Oh my God, most disappointing sci fi film ever. What the hell was up with those monkeys? It seemed liked that stupid scene would never end and I could totally tell that they were dudes in monkey suits. It was like three hours of dudes walking around a spaceship saying nothing and then it gets all trippy and pretentious. Seriously, the movie explained nothing and the ending was beyond stupid. For real, the dude turns into a space baby? Retarded. I guess the evil computer was cool but otherwise, this was a total waste of time and money. 2/10"

I can see what you mean. In the years since, 2001 has gained the respect of critics that were formerly harsh. But the problem I have with Prometheus is that rather that inspire a sense of awe and "what if" as did 2001, it seemed to suck the oxygen of science out the story. Its not as if its questions weren't answered (in good sci fi they don't need to be) but that they weren't asked at all.

I just saw Prometheus and I think that just about every criticism I've read so far is bunk. Some want more blood and gore. Some want answers. Some want questions. Some were expecting to see god: but they'll need to pay the boatman more than twenty bucks for that honor, and they'll need to travel through a few more layers of purgatory first.

It does feel so very appropriate that this creation was birthed with the help of the RED camera.

People might have a few things go say about the story. Personally, I left the theater asking questions and looking forward to re-watching the first two films but NO ONE can say the film didn't look great. I was expecting to see some noise in the dark locations but these guys did a fantastic job and it reminds me, I have much to learn. The Epic help up under fire.

I would probably enjoy a longer version.

Lots (huge amount) of stuff taken out in theatrical version. It is 100% clear to me. Directors/Extended cut will be wa-a-ay better. Has to be TWICE longer at least.

There was a handful noisy shots in there...and surprisingly they weren't the darkest scenes! Someone said that there were limitations with light because of 3D? But that didn't really make sense to me....

Yeh muted response from the critics ......but I don't give a dam . I'm trying to remember critics response to the original "Alien" & "Aliens" something about B grade plots or something from memory....& look at how these films rate now.

Anyway great SF film sure there are some story line bits "like the snake' that are a little overdone ...so what this is SF. Obviously "Star War's" never had any "snake bits" !

Yes, this movie raise questions...... so what.........if you don't like questions go see a Disney movie or a Rom.com. ; )

Dam this is a handsome film & dam this is SF at its best, apart from 2001, Blade Runner & maybe the 1st "Star Wars'. So don't be turned off by the naysers see it & bask in great 21st century cinema.

Alien and Blade Runner: Good simple plot with maybe one or two sub stories. Great momentum... starting slow and building well like all great art. Telling the story in the characters actions not their dialogue: the number one aspect of a great script. About human journeys. Building tension via suspense. Good looking lead character with charisma which is attractive. Surprise, never guessing what will happen next but when it does it feels totally plausible. Characters you care for and when they die, you wish they didn't.

Promethius: None of the above.

Yes, i would give Rilpley a job on a space ship for mining. No I would not give that other woman a trillion dollar voyage because she saw 4 black circles on some cave in Scotland which made her feel uneasy about her necklace which represented her dead father. Seriously.

1/6? Are you using compression of 16:1 at 5K? Or 10:1 at 4K?
I'm talking about 5K Full 5:1... And some shot at 3:1. Single disk USB can't sustain a speed of 90-140 MB/s every time in every part of the disk, specially if your disk is big and you files are placed really far from them self and the magnetics heads have to work a lot.
And what if you need more then one flux at the same time?
In 1.5TB you can store 5h of 5K, it's right, probably is good for spots or promotional videos of some minutes, but a short of 10 minutes usually have around 10h of data, do you work with 3TB of data?
you can have the same amount of footage in 60GB in a 2.5" hard drive bus powered and you can edit where you want in a lite setup :)

The edit will be at least of three days? Good, spend the first night to transcode when you're ssleeping :D

Excuse me for the Off topic
