PROMETHEUS Reaction (((NO SPOILERS till June 8)))

I enjoyed the fact that this inspired one of the better Downfall parodies i've seen in a while. Already linked above but for those who missed it:

I could never of appreciated all those jokes if i hadn't wasted.. i mean spend.. $16 going to see this film. You've just go tho laugh it off.

I'm not going to hate on Ridley Scott. I'm just going to assume he could of made a better movie if he went in with no script at all, and that being stuck with some TV writer was beyond his control and something he just had try make the best of. Would be easy to be bitter but for me it just goes to prove the old adage- anticipation is better than realisation

Best sci fi since Blade Runner?

What about Moon? Hands down the best Sci Fi movie in awhile. Better than Prometheus.

I mentioned MOON in an earlier post on page 1. MOON is great but they are completely different films...Prometheus is more of a "ride" than Moon. I enjoyed Prometheus more.

As for your post to Mark about 90% of people not liking it, haha, not even close....

I thought Prometheus was beautifully shot and edited, the stereography was among the best I've seen (right up there with Hugo, and better than Avatar, IMO), and the Epic acquitted itself admirably; it's a fantastic looking film, and in IMAX 3D, the benefits of oversampling seemed pretty clear to me. Yes, there were major screenplay and character problems, and those certainly keep it from being a great film, but still, I thought it was one of the better major blockbusters I've seen in awhile, and Ridley Scott's best movie since Blade Runner (though in terms of quality, it's still a far cry from either the original Alien or Blade Runner).

I can understand the disappointment at the narrative issues in the film, but frankly, I don't quite get all the vitriol directed at the movie, which is essentially an adaptation of "At the Mountains of Madness" in space. With some stupid scientists who need to learn how to follow protocol.

On paper this movie probably sounded very good. All the elements for a great movie are here. The overall arch and premise of the mythology are intriguing enough. Then you have the players in this story. Other than David, everyone else did not have much to do with this film. The stakes should have been high but you certainly didn't get the feeling anyone was too worried about anything. From the get-go, I wasn't convinced at all of the believability of this crew. When characters are to embark on a journey, who want to feel their passion and you want nothing else than to join in the pursuit. Failed for me there. I didn't get the sense why this crew went along. The idea that people signed up for a 2 year mission to space and not knowing why was a bit of a stretch. They approach a moon on the other end of the universe with a bunch of round buildings and wonder if it's a natural phenomenon. "God doesn't build things in a straight line". This crew acts like its summer camp and can't wait to go outside and play with their new alien friends! You would think that the shear idea that there might be alien life might evoke some emotion of mystery and caution. Nope. They all act like first timers and yet they aren't concerned about hostile lifeforms because they're on a research mission. The geologist character was farcical. He brings some cool mapping devices that everyone is surprised to see. He has no way of seeing any feedback from this data. What? He gets lost with his buddy (a character that I have no idea what he does). It was like a Friday the 13th scene. "What... they didn't make it out?". I guess all that hi-tech POV cameras didn't help get them out. Then they decide to explore the caves and decide to play with the some clearly friendly serpents. Ugh... A trillion dollars to put this mission together and these are the best they could do? The Charlie character didn't seem intelligent enough to put a skateboard together. What was the point of making the Weyland character so mysterious and supposedly dead to reveal him actually alive on the ship and no one cares. The hologram gag was confusing. Was David able to access it at will? There was also enough info to guess that Vickers is indeed a robot. I guess they'll play that up in the sequel. I found the script sloppy. It's got nothing to do with the overall mythology, but you don't want to hang out with loser kids while the cool kids are in another room with the real food. Thats how I felt. The only characters worth watching was tension between Vickers and David and they really didn't play that up too much. Weyland was also a wasted character. Eternal life is a heavy topic but sounded childish coming from him. Didn't feel anything when he died. Didn't feel anything when Charlie died. Definitely not when the geologist or mystery worker died. Almost laughed when Janek and his two side kicks did a roller coaster hands up to their death. Oh boy... I could go on... I know I'm dealing with details here, but I wish I real got a sense of the "dangers to mankind" Damon Lindelof had the same problem with lost. He justified the ending of LOST as being about the characters. People wanted to know more about mythology and he decided to end it about the characters and leave the theories more of a mystery. In Prometheus, we got something pretty thin with characters in my books. Theres a lot of discussions about the symbolism and references to ancient myths and if you understand them, the movie makes more sense. That unfortunaltey does not create suspense and motivation. I don't want to compare this movie to anything to make my point. I feel this movie was attempting to connect the dots of the universe while we had to watch a few dumb kids argue about if it's ok to take their helmets off.

I will say that this was the best use of 3D. It was very comfortable and didn't seem forced. Like how we look at the world. You forget about it. The 3D trailers before the film were less impressive. The way trailers are edited and with so many dissolved, wreak havoc on 3D.

*SPOILERS*

I'm with you. I think you have touched upon a key theme of the film when you refer to their complete and utter disregard for safety protocols.

We have a group of selfish and immature individuals who have come seeking their creators who, as it turns out have decided to destroy them.

With the exception of the ship's pilot and the heroine Shaw, each of the arrogant bastards has their moment of rekoning and does perish.

The selfless heroine is required to endure monumental tests of character and physical endurance and somehow survives. She has super-human physical gifts that allow her to succeed.

If that doesn't sound like a parable or Greco-Roman mythology hang on... A character named Prometheus (The captain piloting a ship.) intervenes on behalf of the humans and saves them as the heroine goes off to fight another battle.

Judged by the moral standards of the film, most of you all would be smitten by now.

Well Matt, the actual thing Mark said was "Ridley at his best" so I would bet that 90% of the people in this world who give a damn about cinema, would disagree that this is NOT Ridley at his best.

Also, Moon and Prometheus are different films, but they are both Science Fiction... Therefore, my comment on "Best sci fi movie in the past decade" still stand.

And for anyone who cares, here is a pretty spot on review of the film. It's kind of harsh, but I think it's exactly what a lot of people are feeling right now.

I like it. It entertained me and it's as simple as that for me sometimes. Money well spent on a Saturday afternoon.

I will probably see it one more time on DVD or Vudu as well.

So people with a different opinion than you don't give a damn about cinema? Just because the script has holes doesn't mean from a Directing stand point it isn't good. It was very well Directed so therefore can be considered Ridley at his best, as a Director. He didn't write the script...

Cinema is subjective art, don't forget that.

I was saying that 90% of people who actually appreciate movies and cinema and everything that goes along with it, will probably agree that this is not Ridley's best movie. That Alien, Blade Runner, or even Gladiator are his best. Hell even Black Hawk Down was better.

He may not have wrote the script, but he should have known it wasn't as good as people would have wanted to be and as a director he should have not settled for that. And if he honestly thought that this was going to turn out to be great and please a great amount of people, then it shows that this probably isn't Ridley at his best.

I honestly don't understand why you are attacking me on this, but oh well.

This would conclude, that most people probably think, that Prometheus is not Ridley at his best. Im sure the low numbers have to do a lot with the script, but as I stated before, if he read it and was okay with it and thought it would be great, some where along the line, it didn't turn out to be.

Please don't get me wrong. I some what enjoyed this movie. It was definitely a ride, if you overlook the many plot holes, which im sure Ridley had nothing to do with. But at the end, was I blown away? No. Did I think Alien was a million times better? Yes. And that is why I think everyone is so mad.

We were waiting for this epic adventure to bring us back to the world Ridley created and just completely blow us away, but at the end of it, it kind of fell flat. It didn't have the impact that the 3 other movies gave me afterwards and that is what everyone was probably hoping for.

Anyone who gets mad because a film they went to see didn't live up to their expectations deserves a swift kick in the ass.

For all the people that hated it. Ridley thanks you for your cash donation.

I can't wait to get the BlueRay. Take my money I say.
Irrespective of logical flaws, it was still entertaining... And that's the only reason I go to movies.

Watched Alien 1 when I got home. Simply and contained... Was tough to watch, only because it was old... But still good for what it was. When I watched it 20 years ago and shit my pants. Today... No so.
Prometheus is not the prequel...
Watch and see.

sorry man, not trying to attack you. Just a difference of opinion. You make yours, I make mine. Thats all

Awesome movie.. Except "oh it's ok, hey little guy" I wanted the little creepy thing to do exactly what it did, because he needed to die.

Yep, I'm with you there Justin. I loved the movie and the plot holes were not too much a distraction for me...except this one scene with the biologist baby-talking a serpent looking new life form. Probably the dumbest scene I've ever seen in a Ridley Scott film.
