  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Problem ulocking Touch screen

pretty sure you have to hold down the lock icon, not just touch it.

You have to hold it down for a few seconds is the trick with it...

Well, I've tried to unlock the screen till I thought it would be quicker to re-install a firmware, which I did, and it did unlock the screen. Not sure why I could not unlock it normally, the corner of the touch screen might not be the most sensitive, or may be I have bad fingers.

I find that if I put my finger in the corner outside of the screen area (so on the screen housing) and roll my finger down onto the screen, I have an easier time hitting the lock/unlock feature of the screen. If I just try and hit it normally it takes me a few times. But doing the outside roll down I always get it on the first try.

Is there a way to disable the lock function permanently? It is the number one problem I have with assistants using the camera on a rental. the screen gets locked by accident, they freak out and cannot unlock it.

+1

The lock function on RED's touch screen is purely idiotic. This NEEDS to be a hardware switch. The touch screen does not always function properly. I've had this issue too many times on set and though it can usually be solved (after multiple attempts and finger holding for 20+ sec) it is nevertheless an absolute pain when encountered in the heat of battle.

Agreed. I have had mine lock several times and had to re-install because it would not unlock. I can't think of a time that I want to lock it.

We have tried to address the screen locking/unlocking annoyances in the next major release. When the next beta is release please test out the new implementation and give more feedback; thanks.

Trent,

I'm really glad to hear that this problem might get fixed. For my particular camera and screen the issue is way better now than it was early on, but I still dread touching that upper right hand corner of the screen.

I'm sure the ability to lock the menu is of use sometimes with a big crew. For myself, usually operating alone filming natural history, it has just been trouble. It is easy to accidentally lock, which is indeed only annoying. My emotional response does gets a bit stronger when it then mysteriously refuses to unlock, despite the tenderest of touch and stroke : )

Unlocking is much simpler in the new implementation (and you don't need to read the manual or ask on the forum how to unlock in case you accidentally lock it). It is also more difficult to accidentally lock it since the function is no longer multiplexed with the menu button.

has this been fixed yet? we are dead in the water on a documentary because of this issue.

How are you dead in the water? If the LCD is locked and you are unable to unlock it, you can force it unlocked by resetting to factory defaults by holding down the power button for 15 seconds on boot.

This didn't work for us, we tried. We ended up having firmware emailed to us and reinstalled the software. We were down for about :90 minutes.

I programmed the bottom right button of the side handle to be the lock/unlock. I find the button too easy to hit for normal use and this way I can always unlock it if I accidentally do it but never have any of my other settings changed inadvertently. It works well for me.
