  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Problem Free?

Interesting post. Of course some are going to have problems with RED. The Alexa has problems. The Sony F65 has problems. Film has problems.

The question is whether or not the problems are manageable and whether there is support...

Jim

That's a fair statement. My main problem has been the REDMOTE. After miserable performance I did the Antenna Upgrade. It is still completely unreliable. There is similar anecdotal evidence from many on this board. There are threads dedicated to it. In order to use it, it has to be rock solid and 99% guaranteed to work within a 20 foot radius. I have found this is not the case. I hope that the Meizler module is a vast improvement on wireless performance over the redmote in its designated functions.

Other than this part of the camera not functioning as it should, I haven't had any real problems, except a couple frames lost on one shoot. I had more problems with film (neg break in the bath, scratches, flashed mags, bad shortends) and HD tape (dropouts) than with Epic.

I can't speak for the Epic but I'll be sending my Scarlet-X in for its 3rd RMA in less than 12 months (horror story here - http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?82978-Footage-Distortion-from-Scarlet-X). Customer service has been great in terms or response times and shipping my Scarlet back from California (I'm in Canada) but quality control testing seems to be the issue. For example, I spent all day today replicating an issue that the camera was sent in for (just got it back from its 2nd RMA last week) and finally managed to do so about half an hour ago but the SSD has no log file so I may have to redo it all over again, ughhhh.

With all that said, RED puts out a beautiful image and I'm still looking forward to the upgrade path to the Epic Dragon when/if it becomes available to us Scarlet owners (I mean common, I've got to have that 1/10000 lemon right?). But if they can't finally solve the issue on this next go-around or just give me a new camera (why is this so hard?), I might look at alternatives or politely request a refund. I mean, if so many cameras are working so great, why don't they just give me a replacement and then everyone's happy? Anyways, I'm no David Fincher or Philip Bloom so I try to set realistic expectations. Glad to hear all the stories of zero issues, can't wait to experience how that feels!

Sweetness, thanks for all the responses peeps..looking forward to making the biggest purchase of me young life, this coming week hahah. Just been seeing a lot of the corrupted file pictures(distorted images) posted on here. Will really be heart broken if that happens to me hahah

Dustin, Just an update as one of those people that have exhibited corrupt file issues. I recently upgraded the firmware to the latest Beta build and haven't had any issues with the Scarlet since. I still have to restart my Epic on really cold days in the mountains. But I will honestly say none of the issues I've experienced would stop me from buying an Epic. I haven't had this much fun shooting since my film days, and I've had a hell of a lot more problems with film and tape then with RED. Also, the response time on issues is really quick.

Reduser is a distorted view of reality.

For every "freak out" post with caps and exclamations in the title and a few bad frames, you have to remember that there are billions of trouble free clips, frames and images being shot all over the world every single day.

when there is a problem, in my experience, red are very quick to respond and provide solutions.

The fact that the forum exists ansd is so active, that people know that RED employees are here and frequent these forums, makes it a handy place to look for support or help.

i have a theory about these corrupt frames. I think many people watch the images (data) while it is copying. I think that this can cause problems.

As a rule of thumb I either watch from the SSD on the computer and then copy, or copy to the external disk and then watch. I try not to do both at the same time, as tempting as it may seem.

RED are not perfect, but reduser exists because they are trying to be. They welcome and need this feedback, it has made them better.

its important to do it in a constructive way.

zero problems with my EPIC since day one. It has many hours in extreme conditions. It's a rocketship built inside a tank.

if someone says no problem he is 0 lying :) its bullshit of course there were problems..still Red Epic best camera out there

Terrible to deal with absolutes especially when you don't have all the data.

Even on devices with far more problems than the RED cameras there are still people who've had no problems with their particular one. There are still launch xbox 360s that have never needed repair for example.

Even with the most reliable devices out there you'll likely be able to find someone at least who's got a dodgy one.

This is a thread discussing peoples own experiences.

Zero problems here for over a year. Had to re-boot my Epic during a shoot once or twice.
I suspect many problems arise from users mixing firmware. Camera, Redmags (format), Redmote, and RedCineX should all be on the current release firmware.

Redmote performance is sometimes unreliable as mentioned above. I find it only works reliably when it's fully charged.

We have not had a single problem that has negatively affected any shoot we have used our Epic on!

Ahhhhh about to order the epic x today or tomorrow!!!!! Fuuuuuuuuck lol thanks for all the positive responses lol didn't think the thread would get this much love. I feel like I'm one of the youngest who will own one of these bad boys.

never a problem that an off/on little computer trick didn't fix with Scarlet or Epic (1 year each)
after all the rumors, I was expecting a lot more issues...but nothing. I did however fry a macbook pro rendering 5k footy all night though. won't do that again

Working as a camera tech I can tell you I have lots of issues, but they usually aren't related directly to the camera. Drive issues, storage issues, workflow issues, the camera is solid though. The red products aren't at fault for basically any of my issues, ever.
