  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Problem Free?

Incredibly reliable! One minor glitch in the first week that a firmware restore fixed right up. Since then, nothing but smooth sailing 100% of the time.

Mine's been great. Its had about 55 shoot days in 10 months and it's never missed a beat. It's never held up production in anyway and the pics have always been great. It's recouping it's outlay moneywise so all is well.

Worked with about 30 Epic cameras over the past years, in all conditions and in some extreme environments and terrain with ton of shaking going on, some with stabilization some without, never a single problem, apart some bugs that might come up, easily fixed with reboot, or on extreme, (only happened once) with a SW Re-Install, and to consider that this were always when using BETA FW, never a single issue on any of the cameras using RELEASE FW.

Best fo all, all cameras went back to RED... For FREE Upgrades, some minor some major... Try and get that with any other manufacturer... ;)

Interesting post. Of course some are going to have problems with RED. The Alexa has problems. The Sony F65 has problems. Film has problems.

The question is whether or not the problems are manageable and whether there is support...

:)....Dang Mr. J just came in and took all the worry out of me.

1x EPIC-X (shipped winter 2011 iirc);

No problems on release-firmware!
Some glitches/problems with beta-firmware (but it's clearly stated to not use those on commercial jobs - so it's your own risk/fault if you do so without extensive testing and/or good preparation)!

New OLPF-Frame was sent to us after just a few days and only one e-Mail to RED, didn't look into the bad-antenna-reception issue (we don't really use our REDmote) but I'm pretty sure if there's a problem it could also be sorted out with RED...

Ahaaaa so that's what it is the problems or bugs or w.e occur from the beta firmwares ok cool got it. I'll definitely be fine then cause I'll just stick with the release lol. That just made me feel a lot better

No Complaints from me Jim, after sales support is one of your companies strengths.

In fact i am going to NAB this year for the first time and i would love to shake your hand. Its a bloody long flight from Australia!

No problems here. Both our Epic and Scarlet have worked well and have not gone back to RED for repairs. Our Epic M went back for some free upgrades, but I would never complain about that!

We've had our Scarlet for a year, shot about 100 short spots and a handful of longer features. There are still a few software glitches but that's generally improving with firmware updates. No lost footage and nothing that's required more than a reboot on the camera to clear. And the footage is in a different league to anything else we've ever used.

Cheers, Hywel

Our Epic-M sensor was showing weird purple lines on our footage when we got it. Sent a log file to RED and unfortunatley it had to go straight back to RED for a repair. That went very smooth, got great help with the paper work for the Norwegian customs from RED (so I didn´t have to pay VAT (sales tax) on it twice).
Then a year later it went back for a free upgrade, thank you RED.
I´ve used this camera in harsh conditions. Shooting a lot in the mountains in winter, out on the open atlantic ocean in winter etc. Never had a problem, other than small glitches when I´m on Beta firmware (and that is to be expected, and nothing a quick reboot wouldn´t fix)
We had the camera for 1,5 years.

Problems happen but I'm happy to know that there is a dedicated support team at RED that is always there when problems arise. Fast response and caring service. Loaner program saved me on a shoot. I don't think there any other camera manufacture on the market that goes above and beyond like RED.

if someone says no problem he is %100 lying :) its bullshit of course there were problems..still Red Epic best camera out there
Well Kemalettin, I don't bullshit anyone, my camera has been problem free, 100%, for the past 9 months.
Speak for yourself brother, not for me.

95% of problems I have seen from day one with Red ones were people doing stupid things, bad practices, and lack of preventative maintenance. No bullshit, no problems.

In general I think Reds DSMC program is quite stable when one sticks to release builds for firmware/software and someone Reducated (or very familiar with the camera) is working on the set. Even with non traditional workflows I find ways to make things work and roll with the punches. The traditional Redmag workflow is quite stable, no problems ever.
