  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Pro Plasma... something or other

I am using the Red Rocket to 11 series through HD-SDI. It works well. Have not tried it with HDMI input. I suspect it would work fine but I doubt it would provide 10 bit. I believe the Panny requires dual HD-SDI input for that. I could be mistaken.

Interesting they skip LCD word in the LED display description in the link you posted, but that is LCD display with LED backlight. I've been using TVLogic XVM-245W which is LED backlighted and 10-bit panel with 12-bit process and also HP Dream Color is LED backlighted and 10-bit panel.
They are both very good as far as the color balance and reproduction goes. Interlace playback is not as good as the latest plasma.

There's often a disconnect - especially here - between what people say and what they really need and mean. Very, very ,very few projects discussed here are distributed on film. They are primarily finished for HD and SD video deliverable formats, be that DVD, BluRay (rarely), Internet viewing, or one-off projection in a rented screening room. Even those that purport to go to festivals are usually delivered as HD screeners. The need for film output by the vast majority of posters here is rare and usually unaffordable. There are a lot of posts here about "working in log," but I have found that what they often mean is "transcoding to Redlog" because they're been told that format is the best way of retaining the most information. So when I talk here about monitoring solutions, I try to keep in mind that video format viewing is really what's being called for, even if it's sometimes described as something else.

Now, that's not to say that there aren't any projects discussed here that get recorded and distributed on film. There are. But very few.

I just checked here in the UK with a couple of Resellers of Broadcast kit. They say they are selling the 11 series Panasonic Displays as requested by facilities as their prefered Colour Grading display for both Broadcast and DI. So what's happening in LA with these displays also seems to be happening here in the UK.

Wow, next thing you know London will also have serious traffic congestion and smog.

Wait a minute - London already has serious traffic congestion, and the smog is just called Fog. Never mind....:001_unsure:

Did anybody try the MXO2 mini with cs4?

Mike, Agreed on both points !

I've seen one of the monitors now and looks very good to me. I Havnt got one to run tests on though.

In practice are there any pros and cons about HDMI 1.3 or later (ie greater than 8 bits) and dual channel HDSDI to feed it with. The only comment Ive heard that its doesnt accept some standards of the Psf formats. Also HDMI is more convenient for us.

Frank,

Are you monitoring single or dual-link? I've not been able to get dual-link to work out of the rocket going to the Panasonic, I've tried on two different systems. Thanks.

Hmm, my understanding was that this was a great secondary monitor, of client monitor. Using it as a standalone grading display seems questionable?

I'll definitely be getting one to work along side my FSI

Your understanding is incorrect, at least according to almost every major post facility in Los Angeles - all of whom are using it as the primary display.

Yes, depending on your viewing environment, you can see a reflection, as is with most professional monitors. And yes, it can present with burn in issues if you leave a static image on the display for an extended period of time. You do not want to use these as a computer monitor. However the 11 series displays are absolutely wonderful.

This thread has been really helpful but I have a bit of a novice question. I'm currently using Flander Scientific LCD's in my HD bays and there is a approx. two frame delay when viewing through the LCD's. I have to monitor audio through the embedded SDI signal passing through the monitor.
Is there a audio delay when using the Panasonic 11 series?
Thanks.

If you're using Final Cut, that's where your delay problem is - the audio is made to be in sync with your computer display. If you're using Avid, there is an adjustment for that (it actually delays the video to your computer display to match the audio delay that you set for the external monitor so that your external video and your computer screen video are in sync with each other, and both are in sync with the audio). The only solution I can think of with Final Cut is to use an external audio delay to match the video - but be aware that by doing this, the audio will be out of sync with the computer display.

Mike,

FCP does have this capability. In System Settings, under the Playback Control tab, there is a Frame Offset setting. This is what we've always used to sync our external monitors in FCP, just like we used to in our Avid systems. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it works the same way, by delaying the video to the computer display.

Thanks for the input. i have both Avid and FCP systems. I have not found where this adjustment for delaying the audio in the Avid can be found. There is also nothing on the Avid boards about this solution.
I'm also still wondering about an audio delay going through the Panasonic TH-42PF11KK with HD-SDI input board.
Thanks,
Doug

Dbl check that you are not running the original firmware. The new firmware on the Flanders solves the delay issue.

I went to see the Sharp LED backlight LCD TVs at Yodobashi Camera and looked quite nice, still LCD though and very expensive. After seeing that I decided to buy 3 several months old Pioneer Kuro Plasma 50 inch at good price.

Hi Kaku-

What model KURO did you buy? I found 3 brand new discontinued KURO's

KURO 600 Series (60") super slim 2.,5" depth.in a high end video store here in Portland...in a window, and the store was closed so couldnt see
exact model number. Just KURO 600 on box.

Mike Most... Are the comparable/superior to the Panny 11 Series talked about here for grading? They actually use the Panasonic screen but Pioneer guts
and superior calibration tools.

What's a "good price" to offer for these discontinued models?

Thanks
