  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Pro Plasma... something or other

Picked up a 58PF11UK and so far I'm finding it fantastic (once calibrated). One thing I would like to point out, as mentioned above, if you do go beyond your HD broadcast scope and submit to a festival, for example, it can still be an HD screener. But, if you do end up going theatrical after that - that means you have a theatrical deal - that also means you have financing to do a theatrical grading before you go to print.

Bottom line though, this plasma screen is a tool, grading is a skill. Just as the Red camera is a tool - anyone can turn it on and point it at something, it's how you use it that makes magic.

Michael from Panasonic Professional Display division sent me some settings they used. I don't know if it is proper etiquette to post here, but if you PM me with your email I can send a PDF.

I would like to point out that these settings don't relate to every set and every room, for there are still a million variables. Also, my own settings changed a lot from these settings that were provided to me. But they did show me some variables that seemed to be inherent in the unit.

Additionally, seeing there is no blue gun on these monitors I used a LEE #181 Congo Blue filter when setting bars on the monitor. I also brought in another calibrated monitor and compared the two. So far end results look good.

Connection is through HDMI and word is that most people also have the monitor connected that way. I know this is not the best and not the highest bit rate, but it is delivering a consistency that I can work with.

Cheers,
Dale

From a DVI or HDMI graphic card or a HDMI video card?
In Europe, they are sold(PPP11) with a DVI port, can i expect good results from the DVI port of a NVIDIA GTX285?

You finally choose to go with the 11 pro serie instead of the consumer V10 12 serie..
For calibration, i presume?

Yeah. To quote someone who seemingly is in the Panasonic "know", it was "strongly recommended" to go with the series 11.

Do you think there is a difference between the dvi and hdmi cards on the monitor?
The calibration guide concern only hdmi and hdsi cards;2.2 and 2.5 gamma.I am on pc...
Thank's for the infos you have already given.

Sorry Koffi. I can't help with that. There are a lot of people here that have contacted me who have the Panasonic configured in different ways (and with success). Perhaps they can add to this.

I wonder if Red Rocket will somehow output blue bars? Then again you should be able to drop in blue bars into your timeline and presto. Correct?

Anyone know if we'll see a pro version of the TC-P54V10? I haven't personally seen one myself but I've heard the black level performance is superior to the 11 series. The 11 series is about 9 months old now and Im wondering if I should be holding out if something new is around the corner.

This is the electronics business. There is ALWAYS something new around the corner. The question isn't whether one should wait on purchases, the question is whether the device being purchased is needed now or not, and whether its expected term of service justifies the purchase price.

Thats the standard answer id give to someone else Mike ;) Im aware. Just wondering if anyone had specific knowledge of something new because the TC-P54V10 is getting really great reviews. HD Gurus changed their rating system to accommodate all it's awesomeness. Granted they are a consumer based review site, but im particularly interested in it's black level performance.

The xxxV10 and xxxG15 series HDTVs are amazing, they're using the 12th gen panel, so a newer panel than what is in the 11 series pro monitors. I'm waiting to see what's up with the HDMI output from the RED Rocket. If we're definitely getting 10bit HDMI w/ "deep color", then I'm probably going to go with TC-P54V10 plasma myself. Calibration is going to be the same either way. The consumer panels have very functional service menus with lots of options to disable the extra internal processing and other fluff. Do a full ISF calibration on them to match 2.4 gamma D65 and they should be good to go. At least for all of my needs... If I need more accurate than that, I'll be taking my project to a pro colorist anyway.

with the RED Rocket™ out now, is the HDSDI necessary for the 11 series or one can just use DVI cable output from the rocket and feed that into dvi/hdmi (is this 10bit there? can anyone confirm for sure?) of the panasonic?

curious if anyone is using this setup and what are the downsides of going this route vs HDSDI monitor card?

any good deals on this monitor going now?
thanks!
