  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

PRO IO MINI - WHO WANTS IT - VOTE HERE !

In your mock-up I think the ports themselves would practically be banging into each other, forget about the electronics to run them all. I think you're overestimating how much they could shrink it.

Still, I vote in favor of it because of how much more affordable it could be!

Love the idea of a Channel 1 / Channel 2 XLR input -- good idea, Mark.

Everything I do is double system sound, so extra audio is not important to me.
I would like a mini IO with 2nd EVF/LCD port, contact closure remote trigger port (like Red One has), the equivalent of a Deneke SB-3 with a BNC timecode in. It would have capacitors or a small removable battery that keeps time code during camera battery changes. If room for more would add P-Tap and 1 SDI out.

Yes, don't make the Epic any bigger.
If you put all the modules on it the Epic becomes bigger than an Alexa.
I want to keep it as small as possible.
So plus 1 for an new smaller I/O module.

Looks real good to me although I would be happy with a single 5 pin canon XLR port that could take two channels with a simple breakout stereo cable. Drop the 5 pin audio out as a stereo headphone jack would do the job. Space saved could go to an extra HDSDI port and a red LCD/EVF port. Whatever the combo of ports the compact concept is a winner.

I realize this is probably a hard thing to build and that is why its not already being built.... but if it ever does get built, I'll be one of the first to order it. One of the reasons for the ProIO not being something I have is that it is too large to go along with my quad battery module (I'd have a huge camera!), and I don't need everything on it so why waste all the space?

+1 Anything to make my EPIC/Scarlet if need be without too much compromise

Put my vote in.

That said, many of us come from the world of features and commercials where recording audio into camera was often not the standard and double system ruled (and still does). I would love a "cine" mini I/O option that didn't even have XLR inputs - just EVF, SDI, D tap, and 12 volt lemo. 99 % of my jobs the audio into camera is just a scratch track or we don't use it all. I'm sure I'm not alone. And if I need audio XLR's there are a few well integrated baseplate/xlr adaptor systems out there. My guess, the audio xlrs is one of the reasons the current I/O module is such a beast.

We got our pro I/O today... Love it. The thing is, the times when you need both touch screen and a EVF and extra ports... usually if you think of it, those times are the times when small or big size does not matter. When putting the pro I/O on and a fat lens and matte box and the quad battpack and other stuff you allready gone way passed the small handheld setup. Fur sure then the camera will not be something you have hanging around you neck on your sunday stroll in the same way as your canon 550D... So having it small (brain side handle) for handheld, steady cam, and camera rig work and then putting on all the needed modules on when shooting from dolly or tripod is not a bad way to go.

We have to consider, Not to far ago we where actually shooting with 2 wiper cams. Those cameras demanded one D6 woodoo tape deck each on set... The tape decks where about one cubic meter each and weighted about 80 kg... (giving us HD uncompressed 8 bit 25p on tape for as little as 1500USD per 60 minute tape ).... then that was the future for sure :)

WOW!!!! that looks so wrong.... But Im sure it works perfectly.

I refuse to make mine grow that long. I'm so use to a simple little power house.

Actually, Im a liar.. I have 2 more EPICs set up in full production mode... which sometimes get quite big... but they are still not that long.

I don't think RED troll these forums much anymore.... Like the good old days.
We havent heard a peep from anyone... sadly .

2500 hits over the last 15 hours must mean there is solid interest in these two modules.
The QUAD battery module was ... sort of flop for most of us (and possibly RED) but that got made and distributed... and now selling second hand for as low as $500... (no fault of REDs) Not everything they make is going to be gold.

I hope the powers of RED see the necessity of these module ideas over something like the quad module.
