  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

PRO IO MINI - VERSION 2 - WHO WANTS ONE !!!!

Am I aloud to swear up in here? The Samurai works an absolute treat for me, it's tiny, runs ALL DAY from it's own batteries and the media is also cheap and instantly accessible on my laptop. It's 10-bit ProRes 4:2:2 is enough for commercial use and the image quality is astonishing considering I bypass r3d compression. In fact, the footage I get from my Samurai is cleaner and sharper than anything I render from RedCine-X. Don't get me wrong, a module like the one you created looks amazing, seriously amazing! I would buy one in a heart beat if it was priced competitively, but I just don't get how tragic it is not to have it, when you already have choices like the Samurai.

The 4K part sounds awesome though....that would be cool. But can you really call 4k (ProRes/DNxHD) a proxy?

I would buy this.

But it needs to happen very soon.

Alexa is killing it, C300 is killing it. Red RAW scares clients and producers.

Is there any reason why we Red could not use the current Redmags?

With over 15,000 hits on these threads and countless amount of people putting their hands up for one... I'd say with the lack of response from RED on this subject...
I'm thinking we may have all been told (via the silent treatment) that this idea is dead.

Matthew,

You are a lucky man as my experience with the Samurai has been the opposite. Been through multiple units all with their own issues. It has come down to the suppliers blaming the SDI Output on my camera as no good.

PLEASE DO NOT make it a 4K proxy module. The whole point is a module that allows an easy no brainer fit into standard workflows for undemanding projects, instant dailies, quick turnarounds and technically naive clients. Maybe a 4K option if it was an easy inclusion but if you want 4K use the R3Ds.

There is little doubt this proxy recorder module is coming "early next year" which is tough as I needed it last year.

You need not look at the lack of response here. Look no further than the Meizler announcement and it's painfully clear a mini I/O isn't going to happen anytime soon. Why would Red cannibalize the sales of an all in one uber in/out proxy recorder, pig of a module with incredibly useful, customizable, keep the weight/size low, mini modules? Meizler, altough I'd love one, it definitely robs the Epic of one of its advantages - size. Is the Red I/O box with a Pix 240 strapped to it my Frankenkamera option? Yeah, it kind chafes my a$$ as F65 and Alexa's, have me thinking of putting the Epic on the block. When you look at the number of TV shows produced on Alexa, it isn't just
because it's bigger and not shoot 4k.

Mark,

I'll bet you dollar to donuts that RED is VERY much in the works on small proxy capture modules and the like.. You need to look at their history of how they roll things out. They usually start with the "titanium" models.. Higher cost, and better quality then down the road comes the aluminum models.

It makes no real business sense to announce a ship date on a product that could under cut the sales of an existing product. Also the tech for the proxy recorder as well as the software if being developed on the larger model now.

I have NO DOUBT you will see what you are looking for, but not for a little while yet.

RED does not want to chase Alexia around the block. There's no challenge to them there, they want to SET THE STANDARD by which all others follow. They feel the best way to to this is at the pro level first where money is not that much of a consideration. Then they move down from there.

Of course I am guessing, but I've been around for a while.

The major change I'd love to see would be a massive noise reduction in regard to the fans, but I don' t see how this could be done with the current model.

However I have no doubt that fan / camera noise is a top issue for them.. They will get to it.

I'd love to keep up with Alexa (in terms of rentals). Right now, it's crushing me and many other owners. I think Red should not only chase Alexa but pass it up. They have the technology and the know how to make it so. I don't think it's about challenges. Having an affordable proxy and a small I/O module is about meeting reasonable expectations. it's about optimizing a system at a decent price (that's where Red made its mark with R1). Yet the R1 began its life with two Lemo and two SDI's from the get go. Was it left out for so long from the Epic because it wasn't challenging? Yes, Epic is playing catch up but all the solutions are either huge and/or hugely expensive. The Meizler puts my camera not only one step closer to Alexa and on par with F65 in price but also in size. At that point, I seriously have to think about which system to go with. Small I/O modules as Toia presents keep Red's advantages (price and size).

aha...
20,000 hits over the two MINI module threads... No RED comments.
I hear your pain Ned. Especially when we both know how amazing the 5k EPIC is as a small camera, but the rentals go to a HD pro res colour baked Camera. It's a weird world.

Regarding your Meizler comment.... I think your EPIC with a Meizler far options out a F65 and a Arri... by quite a bit and is still smaller.. and cheaper over all.
Thats only if RED can use PRO RES one day in it.... , which could be a long time off knowing APPLES long winded approval processes.

+1

I don't get the idea behind a 4K proxy, that will make heavy files. 4K is for cinema projection, you're going to want to do a proper debayer w/ color grading. That's not what proxies are made for. Tom is absolutely right, proxies are either for offline editing, for which HD is plenty sufficient, or for quick turnaround or simplified post. whcih is mainly for TV, which is still HD for quite some time. Maybe a 2k option would be nice, but that's also for Cinemas, which means DCP, it seems odd to me to make a DCP from ProRes when you have raw files, but for smalll budget itmay be a nice option. This risk is though, that producers will just say the ProRes is sufficient and refuse to pay for a color grading formt the raw files...

The main point thought, is that ProRes, or DNxHD, 4K files would be really large... unless low quality, heavier thant .r3d ! So yes yes yes to a small proxy module, but HD, 2K option I think is necessary, because it's coming on the Alexa, and if you want to be futur proof, allow up to 50/60p, because that's where TV is headed, way before 4K !

Cheers,
Damien

I don't understand why people are bugging RED to build one of these. Its not going to happen. That's why there is the MEIZLER MODULE.

And this ProRes and Avid DNA codec...they aren't going to add that to the mix. Remember, RED is Digital Cinema...RED doesn't want to pursue the smaller markets. If so, they would of done this years ago.

That's my two cents.

The smaller market are the ones that are buying EPICs up big... Owner operators remember. And are looking for a cameras that do both raw and prores and keeps it all small still..
You have to be mad not to cater for the thousands that want this... over the hundreds that may want the big version....
My two cents worth :))))

It sure is a very nice Mini Module Mark, but it is way too small to have all there, it needs to be double its thickness, unless of course RED can pull miracles.. ;)

Havent they pulled off a (technical) miracle with the EPIC in the first place ?
