  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Premiere to Resolve Round Trip workflow

Thanks for the input M Most... With resolve 9.1.5 (latest version before 10), upon importing an XML with time remapping from Premiere Pro, I get an error regarding the time remapped clips. Then in the timeline itself the clips don't have any time remapping on them. Then with resolve 10 the clips actually carry over, but do not render properly (they lose their time remapping during render for some reason). You mentioned that from FCP7 or X an XML or an AAF from Avid will work, but I'm not using either of those NLEs. I'm using Premiere pro.

Actually, the latest one, before V10 is V 9.1.6.
You may lose your time remappings, depending on how you do the render. That is correct and that is how the process had been designed. If you had followed my original directions exactly as written, instead of calling me names, you'd already know the answer.
But as I already told you in private, I'm done trying to help you. I'll let someone else do it from now on.

Just to cap everything off, here is what I have found, through the input on this forum and a few others as well. This seems to be the most consistent working solution for me. Without any transitions or time remapping: An XML from Premiere to Resolve and from Resolve to Premiere works great. The tricky part is unique transitions and time remapping (ramping especially).

While shots with certain transitions will carry over and shots with constant time remapping will carry over roundtrip... For the shots where unique transitions do not carry over, and shots with changing time remapping or ramping (pretty much anything that gives you an error or doesn't carry over roundtrip) this is what I have done:

1- Edit your clips in Premiere pro using your RED Raw.
2- Clips with unique transitions or special time ramping - transcode into a 16 Bit DPX or something like that (use RedLogFilm not any preset looks). This bakes in the effects and still gives you plenty of information to color with. Then put them back into your timeline.
3- Export an XML from Premiere Pro.
4- Import the XML into Resolve and your clips should follow.
5- Color.
6- Render your timeline as a "Final Cut Pro XML Round-Trip" (I like DNxHD 10bit codec as a PC user) and don't forget to Export an XML from the Resolve conform/edit page.
7- Import the Resolve XML to Premiere, your clips should follow, thats it!

Of course, without any unique transitions, time remapping/ramping, just take out step 2. Hope this helps people!

It's not very smart to color grade time remapped shots as there is a lot of frame
blending going on. You should do it the other way round if its a needed effect. Color grade your first edit (exported from your nle)cuts only in resolve then render all clips back to the NLE you can then create all your time remapped effects etc. Way you an continuously color manage your footage with resolve if need be as you lock your final cut. Every time you export a render from resolve which is super fast to do your clips are continuously updated in your NLE. updated. by the way the optical flow retiming in resolve blows premiere out of the water.

Very helpful. I've been looking for this info for awhile

Thanks!

Jesse! Thank you so much. Worked perfectly and saved me a ton of headache. I owe you a few beers for that one.
