  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hey guys, no one seems to be able to answer this question, hopefully someone here has the answer to this... I want to edit a sequence in premiere, then bring it into resolve for color correction and grading with my RED footage, then back to premiere for a final edit. Now, simple things like a flattening out the timeline (via DPX or another format) from premiere to resolve work fine, but now I am dealing with a flattened image and not RED Raw files. So here is my question: Does anyone have a solution for bringing a timeline from Premiere to Resolve (while still maintaining basic dissolve transitions and time remapping), doing a grade in Resolve, and rendering it back out to premiere for a final edit? I have seen this tutorial before (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0S2MJT9wDY) and it doesn't work for the workflow I need (transitions and time remapping are lost amongst several other flaws). Any suggestions or tips on what you guys use for workflow between these two programs? Thanks in advance!

Well, I think I found my own solution to this problem. It seems to work as of now with only a minor glitch... 1 - Edit my timeline in premiere with my RED footage 2 - Render all my shots with effects on them as a 16bit 4:4:4 RGb image sequence (DPX or something similar). 3 - Export my timeline via XML or AAF to resolve. 4 - Grade 5 - Render resolve timeline as a DNxHD, and export an XML or AAF from resolve 6 - Import your XML or AAF into premiere and link it to your rendered Resolve footage.... The only problem is the footage after being relinked in premiere doesn't have out points, so I have to trim the clips again. Does anyone know why this happens? Can anyone improve on this workflow? Thanks in advance. Big thanks to Mathew Scott for helping me getting to this point so far.

Jeasuuussss.
Edit in PPro using RAW, export FCP XML, import into Resolve, grade, select FCP roundtrip (yes, it will work for PPro as well), select folder for render and render with codec of your choice. I suggest Prores 444). Open XML with PPro, done.

For your final step do you need to export an XML from resolve as well, or use the same XML you created from PP? Thank you jeasuuusss.

lol, yes you will need to use an xml form resolve... try it out and come back if you have trouble

Yep, everything seems to work! The only thing that gives it issues is transitions or time remapping. As long as I bake those effects in and render it out as a 16bit DPX or something like that (then bring those clips back into my timeline) it works perfectly. Thanks everyone who contributed!

That's funny.
You ask for help and then you ignore it. Do you always do things the hard way?

No, what's funny is you posting a useless reply that simplifies a post I had just created. Have you tried to export and XML with dissolves , time remapping and transitions? I have not gotten it to carry over round trip no matter what I do. This is the work around I have found that other people may find helpful. Drop the attitude and do something useful.

If you bothered to follow my "useless" advice, you'd see, that all those things do work perfectly with XML.
Your, so called, "work around" is what one would call a Rube Goldberg solution.
And you're welcome!
What a jerk…

Unfortunately "Time-remaping" or non-constant time changes, do not come through insofar as I'm aware. (Unless this is new with Davinci 10)

Constant speed changes do work, though for some reason there is a bit of weirdness on coming back to Premiere if you have handles, so it requires a bit of manual finessing.

Transitions come through well enough. If the correct one isn't applied on the conform back to premiere, just switch it out.

Sizing and re-framing also works OK, but there are a couple gotchas (mainly to do with working with different sized media or different sized timelines)

Cheers,
-Alan

No, it does not work, try it for yourself and find out. And I did say thanks, go back and read my posts. Again, drop that attitude. No need for childish names, you're a big boy now.

that's what I have experienced as well Alan. Anything with a time remapping doesn't come through at all, while the transitions seem to be hit and miss. Thanks for confirming the issues I have had, at least I know it is constant amongst others as well. Maybe in future resolve 10 updated this problems will be a thing of the past.

Time remapping does work with XML and AAF in V9. The only problem it's read only and can't be re-adjusted in Resolve. if you use FCP XML roundtrip like I told you, you'd see, that it works. Instead you're waisting time inventing your unneeded "work arounds"

You have funny way of showing gratitude by being a jerk.

Then you have a magic version or resolve 9 as others I have spoken to says it does not carry over. I also get errors with time remapped clips in the resolve error log, on top of the clips not carrying through.

Do not post replies with attitude then get mad when someone calls you on it. This will be my last post on this off topic side conversation. If you for some reason would like to finish it send me a pm. I'm also local in LA if you would like to chat further.

You continue being a jerk.
Drop the attitude and you may learn a thing or two.
If you think I have a "magic" version of Resolve, then you may believe it when Rohit Gupta says http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/364/665
"You can export a XML (from FCP 7 and X), and AAF from Avid Media Composer to bring across the speed ramps into Resolve V9"
Satisfied?

I have to agree with Jake here. Not on the "jerk" part, but the fact that Resolve should bring across any speed ramps from either a FCP7 or X XML or an AAF from Avid. That was not the case on the earliest builds of Version 9, but it was implemented some time ago, either late 2012 or early 2013. Version 10 also supports speed ramps, with the added benefit of allowing multiple interpolations, including optical flow (not available in Version 9).

Thanks for the input M Most... With resolve 9.1.5 (latest version before 10), upon importing an XML with time remapping from Premiere Pro, I get an error regarding the time remapped clips. Then in the timeline itself the clips don't have any time remapping on them. Then with resolve 10 the clips actually carry over, but do not render properly (they lose their time remapping during render for some reason). You mentioned that from FCP7 or X an XML or an AAF from Avid will work, but I'm not using either of those NLEs. I'm using Premiere pro.
