Hi all,

I'm experiencing a strange quirk within Premiere between my system and the Red Rocket X, and was hoping someone may have some insight.

My company just received our Dragon upgrade a few days ago, and eager to test it out, fired off a few shots. I brought the shots into Redcine X first, and playback was super smooth with the recently-installed Rocket X as well as OpenCL enabled. Right now the side panel of the CPU is off, so I know the Rocket is working because I can hear the fan spinning up when the red footage plays.

Next steps were to bring the R3Ds into Premiere Pro CC just to make sure everything was running smoothly. I started up a new project, imported the footage, and with OpenCL enabled started to cut on both a 5K timeline and a 1080 timeline (for client monitoring). Initially playback is smooth, but once I can hear the Rocket fan start spinning, the computer locks up during playback and almost immediately shuts down the computer. To clarify, the computer doesn't fully shut off but goes back to the Reboot screen with the Apple icon. No beach ball, no warning really, the machine just dies.

I called Red support and they suggested trying to get the machine to crash in Redcine first. Using a combination of new Dragon footage as well as Epic footage I slapped shots together on a timeline, stacked multiple video and audio layers, and even at full-res playback couldn't get the machine to crash. I could hear the fan spinning the same way as it did in Premiere, but I couldn't get the machine to die. Since it doesn't crash in Redcine, Red support assumes it's a Premiere issue.

That said, do any of you have any thoughts as to where the problem may lie? We thought the Rocket X may be drawing too much power, but after checking our work and conferring with Red we have the power lines set up correctly. The one thing we haven't tried is playback without GPU support, but that only seems like a stopgap to me. Ideally we would use both the Rocket X and GPU for full horsepower. I did have an original Rocket in this machine that was able to cut R3Ds in Premiere without issue, but with the new Dragon we wanted to upgrade to the new Rocket X. Also, I'm working out of a 2012 Mac Tower, ATI Radeon HD 5700, fully loaded with RAM.

Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Anyone else experiencing this?

Is it as simple as uninstall-reinstall or is it a deeper problem?

Thanks!

Considering that very few people have a Rocket X not too many people are going to be able to compare and help you... Have you talked to Adobe?

UPDATE:

Talked to Adobe and the best we could come up with was that between Premiere, my GPU and the Rocket-X there was some sort of power draw that overloaded the power supply on the computer. After a little tinkering we were able to connect an external power supply unit to both cards. Here's where we stand now:

I can no longer get the computer to crash in Premiere using the Rocket-X and GPU (Redcine X and DaVinci have always been stable)!

BUT

My new problem is this: When using the Rocket-X in combination with CUDA in Premiere, I consistently get freezing issues with my timeline. The computer itself is not freezing, just playback. Once the freeze starts I cannot get Premiere to refresh the video stream, and usually have to either disable the Rocket (via Source Settings) or restart the program. Playback using just CUDA is solid and consistent. Playback using just Rocket is non-existent. Playback using both works for a short while (1-2 minutes at best) but if I try to do actual editing it will freeze, and simple playback will freeze after a point (hard to say exactly what that point is).

So, does anyone have any advice out there? I'm on the latest Rocket-X drivers (1.4.36), CUDA is updated, Premiere CC is updated. Should I reinstall the Rocket-X drivers (also is there a way to wipe them to start fresh)?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi Jonnie,

You might contact RED tech. They have additional firmware and drivers, that you might be able to roll up and back. Certainly worth a call and I think that they would have interest in ferreting out this issue. If you only have one version of upload able firmware for the RRX, it won't reload, AFAIK-at least mine won't. I have CS6, but have been on a personal boycott of Adobe, due to the cloud update program, with mixed results to date...

Thank you very much

Hi Nick,

Thanks for your reply and help!

Another quick update: After talking to Adobe on Friday, they mentioned that they're starting to see this same issue from multiple customers. Supposedly they're working the issue up the food chain, and hopefully I should hear something this week.

When we initially talked to RED tech, they were pretty confident the issue was between Adobe and the cards in my computer. Going through all of RED's recommended stress tests in Redcine-X, I still haven't been able to replicate the crash, and because of that the hardware should be in working order. We'll see what Adobe says when they get back to me (supposed to be early this week). If they still have no solution I'll see if RED has any other ideas.

Thanks for your help, and I'll keep you all updated!

I am encountering a similar issue in Premiere CC with my standard Red Rocket. Works great inside Red Cine X, enable the card via source settings in Premiere and the playback no longer works. When using just the Mercury playback engine in premiere I can view 5k footage at 1/4 just fine, with red rocket enabled it won't even playback 1/8. I originally thought it might be a voltage issue on the motherboard since it was an older board. Replaced the board and still no dice. Tried re-installing premiere and still no good. Have you seen any updates on this?

I am having problems with my Rocket card and Cuda card combo in Premiere CC. I can playback 1/2 res with Cuda only but with Rocket card enabled my plackback is stalled out.

Any info would be great.

Having same issue of stalling with new Premiere Pro CC ( 2014 ). Rocket-X works in Red Cine-X, but can't seem to get it to work in Premiere. Dropping frames then timeline is completely unresponsive. Anyone figure this out yet?

Seems to be working ok on my system.

Dual Xeon X5650 CPU
48Gb RAM
Rocket-X
Dual Titan Black OC
BM 3D Extreme I/O

Playing back 6KHD, Rocket-X enabled. CPU's running at about 9%, GPU1 running at 12%, GPU2 running at about 40%. I'm using a Blackmagic 1080p/23.98 timeline with playback quality set to full. Not sure if the Rocket-X is pulling it's share of the load or if the GPU's are handling most of it.

Does Adobe Premiere Pro CC using use the RRX Card?

Seeing the exact same thing on my timeline with Ppro. With older Epic MX files and newer Dragon. The timeline just goes to crap after about an hour of putting a sequence together. 20-25 clips, nothing fancy/special, basic cutting without effects.

Just got our Rocket-X so too early to tell performance yet, but I'm noticing in Premiere that clips without scaling or scaling set to an even number like 50% playback smoothly, while clips that are set to some other percentage like 45 or 62 tend to play back stuttered. This is on a 1080p timeline working with 4K and 5K material.

Sometimes the playback over Rocket-X is smooth and sometimes it's jerky. I can't quite figure out why though. Whereas the GPU debayer without Rocket is at least more consistently smooth. This is on a fully loaded newMac Pro 12-core.

Might not be a RRX problem, might just be a crappy software problem. Can you get the same thing to happen in another NLE? FCP-X?

How do you really know the RRX is even being used?

I guess I don't. Other than playback is now worse with the Rocket-X, in that it just stalls and doesn't want to play any R3D's. The Rocket-X works great in RedCine-X. So maybe it's either the Red SDK or Premiere's implementation of it being bad. I haven't had enough time with it in DaVinci yet. But Premiere so far is a bust. I guess it's time to email Red support to see if they have any fixes.

One trick to know if the Rocket is being used is to open Premiere, get some stuff in the timeline, make sure your Rocket is enabled in source settings then open up RCX. If the Rocket is not on in Premiere you'll be able to use it in RCX. This is what is happening in CC 2014.

Just an update on my end if this helps anyone. Still getting hanging on the Rocket-X with GPU debayer. I'll turn the Rocket-X off and be able to edit ( I clicked Prevent App Nap on Premiere Pro CC 2014 ). Exporting is fast when the Rocket is off, but it also is using all the CPUs as well as full processor load on the GPU ( GTX 780 ), which I've never seen. Rocket X enabled export is slow but CPU usage is at 1/8 and GPU is running at about 1/2. 4K timeline, some adjustment layers, etc. Seems to be some mangled hand offs on serving up frames when Rocket-X is decoding on CC 2014. GPU debayer works better though. Footage is 6K FF 48fps at I think 7:1 or 8:1.

Hmm, this is all very concerning as I am debating on getting a RRX with my Dragon upgrade. I work in CC 2014 and I typically just import my .r3ds and work in a 1080p timeline. I never leave CC as I do all my grading and export from there. For performance goals, I'd like to edit at maybe 1/2 res smoothly in CC. Sounds like RRX is not really beneficial for the cost, correct? If so, should I invest money in a 10/12 core Mac Pro instead?
