  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

POSTED: EPIC Firmware v1.6.44 (Release) and v1.7.9 (BETA)

Look around and formats

Look around and formats

As I understand it the look around area (at least for 4KHD and 2K) have been disabled to allow for maximum frame rates...

I understand it is not trivial to implement (it might be as complex as adding another format altogether) and areother features like playback have priority but is it planned to have the look around available when shooting at 24/25/30 ?

Also a more general question regarding formats : Do any of those have a chance to be added in the next few months/builds :

- a 4K (4096 x2304) 16/9 format (would be useful to get matching R3D files for multi cam projects shot with an MX and Epic at 4K)
- a 3K format (for higher frame rates without going to 2K)
- a 5K 16/9 crop (I can shoot FF and add frame guides / crop in RCX but just curious if this one is on the 'to do list' or not)
- a 1K format on the Epic for ultra fast frame rates (would be more of a toy than a real PRO feature at that res, but would be amazing to have a 1024 x 1024 crop at hopefully 600-800 fps for shooting some natural/scientific phenomenons)

I know someone else may ask for 4.5 K or whatever exotic format and I'd understand if limited resources would not allow for those request but thought I'd just ask if more formats are planned for the Epic in a 'near' future.

Thanks for any info on this and the look around ....

Hi Mikael

4.5k is a very un-exotic format for me... It does, I grant you, depend on how you define format. For me the size of the sensor and how big a imaging ciracle is used is important. 4.5k in terms of width is very very close to S35 and pretty much bang on the same as a F65, ALexa etc.

I consider the current (albiet usefull and exciting) EPIC FF format very excotic... both in terms of size and aspect ratio.

just a thought?

Michael

Yes 4.5 K is a very cool format too. I don't use it much here as I got used to the 4K 16/9 workflow and just crop to 1.85 when needed but it's a great feature to be able to use the full R1 sensor width, sorry I just meant it could be hard for RED to please everyone and add every existing R1 format to the Epic...

Someone even suggested a user adjustable sensor crop in another thread. I imagine it could be a real nightmare to support such a feature for RED (both in camera and in post) and may never see the light but would be the ultimate solution ! Just set a custom frame guide, apply it as a sensor crop and it calculate the max allowed REDCode/ framerate/ HDRx depending on total pixel count/datarate.

For those of you like me that are waiting for your Bomb EVF, the HDMI port will now work with the Zacuto EVF for a temporary solution.
