  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Post Your Scarlet-X Rig

Thanks Nicholas -

I'm pretty happy so far - It's balanced well enough that I can shoulder mount steady enough to shoot with a 135 at f2. The shoulder pad isn't that comfortable, but I had a good 15-20 pounds on my shoulder for 6 hours and survived. I have been checking out your viewfinder as I shot with that style of setup on the back of my 5d quite a bit.

Yeah, looks nice, with a very low point of balance.

I have build over the last few weeks a Underwater Housing Prototype, Kept it simple and mechanical.
I am out on the Great Barrier reef on some time off giving it its Maiden voyage, test and shake down.
Tested it down to 33msw so far, design depth is 120m and with a glass dome even further.
Have the balance and weight took 2 dives to get perfect... Im pretty happy really!

Red Scarlet, Tonkina 11-16 and Cannon 18-55
RedTouch LCD Screen
powered by a V-Lock Battery pack
Custom underwater Aircraft grade aluminum housing designed for Aquatica lens ports.
Large Acrylic dome and smaller Mineral Glass dome (I am finding the large less technically advanced Acrylic dome to be sharper).
Mechanical controlls for Iris, REC/Focus, On/Off, Zoom, Enter(RedMote).
Coming soon - Geared focus, more assign buttons to change ISO/Shutter etc

Lights are Greenforce, I have both LED and HID.

I have many more photos of the build and test shots underwater, the Tonkina works wonderfully underwater.
Shots of me were taken on a GoPro, The test 4K Red Screen shots are Tiff then converted to JPG.
There is some motion blur as i am only running a 50th shutter, I am keen to see how high I can go underwater before it starts strobing.

I may offer a final version of this housing up for sale, two versions, one long housing that will run 2 V-lock batts and a shorter stubby one that can run off the handle or smaller V-lock batts.

Love to hear feedback, Most of my work is HD delivery so have not setup for larger PL lenses at this time, But I will soon with a little more $$$
This is a housing built by a Full Time Underwater cameraman/DOP and part time engineer.

After a year of messing with different configurations here's my current one. A couple of things you might find interesting: I have modified a Edelkrone hand grip so that I can use my right hand to focus, zoom and hold the camera (like a broadcast lens). I have switched from a Bomb EVF to using the 5" touch with the carbonite cinema scope which is working out great. Also, I have the Paralynx Arrow on it for wireless video which clients really love. The last picture shows my other setup with the addition of the Tilta shoulder pad and quick release plate, Atomos Samurai and A-box. I use this setup less due to the weight but both have their place depending on the shoot. Been through a lot of configurations so I thought I'd share so other might get ideas of what will work for them.

Great combinations Benjamin. The Edelkrone part is very interesting, can you recommend it? Has the camera a good balance?

I too are interested on how you like the Edelkrone Modula 1? I have this piece and was about to sell it as I waited for my Scarlet - how do you like it?

yea its the gini rig.

Price/Quality ratio, I doubt if you can find anything that beats gini though many would argue that they are in the cloning business. And you can read my thoughts on gini

Thanks a lot sir! Intersting points - I might get one just to test it out, I rarely do handheld work so it doesn't warrent serious long term invetment, but this might be a good fit for my needs

How come this thread has fallen that way back? nobody is buying accessories anymore for christmas? :)

To bump the thread, here's a picture of my wife holding our homemade system to emulate a small crane move! Manfrotto tripod (that technically can't handle more than 6kg), an 80$ opteka slider, and books to hold everything together.

As ridiculous as it looks, the result was surprisingly not bad. We are shooting our first feature right now, and it would just not be possible without RED. Our little Scarlet is doing wonders, and produces images that have never been possible for that kind of money.

Happy to year, and let's put our cameras to work :)

I'm such a fan of badass, do-it-yourself, make it work using any object in reach, solutions. There is no doubt in my mind that that setup produced an amazing shot.

Didnt see enough BTS frames on your FB site :(
