  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Post Your Scarlet-X Rig

The 504 only supports 16lbs I believe. I have that head myself, but ordered the Miller Compass 25 (supports 30lbs) once I purchased my Epic. I want that comfort knowing that I don't have to worry about my tripod's head weight limitations.

Here is how I have been setting things up lately...

HI Aaron - Nice simple Rig - The way I like it.

If you don't need a mattebox/ff I think its the way to go. Though I think you can easily fit a ff on that setup as well.

Well done.

What do you guys think I should go for if I buy an all rounder Scarlet - In the sense that I will use the Scarlet for both live events and studio work. Canon or PL mount.?
Sense tells me to go for the PL mount but every time I see work with the PL lenses I just love it.

Having an AL mount and Canon lenses will definitely keep the weight down.

I'm definitely considering it...

Brandon J.F. can you tell me what matte box that is please? Most of the other bits and bobs are Wooden camera I think...

Well, as I don't have my camera yet, I can only begin to build my rig... currently working on top plate configurations.

This one is constructed with the following components:

RED DSMC Tactical Top Plate
Wooden Camera LW15 Top Mount
Wooden Camera Rails (100mm and 70mm)
5" Touch with Wooden Camera NATO Clamp
Redrock Micro 15mm Carbon Fiber Rods

We use the heck out of the Chrosziel Aladin II wireless follow focus, so I pretty much always have this controller box and a motor mounted to my cameras.

I was hoping to mount the RED sliding top handle to the rail on top of the rod mount, but it unfortunately won't clear the WFF controller box... so until I figure that out, I'll be using the Redrock Micro top handle and the LCD attached to the rails on the side of the top plate (pics coming.)

Scarlet-X #696 in Montana. Loving it!

I just tested this out for Anthony. It looks like my Steadicam IDX bricks give an impressive amount of life. The runtime while idle starting from a full battery is 1.5 hours.

Gives me some confidence in powering the Scarlet off of the steadicam sled along with the sled monitor, FF receiver and motor.

Though, with a 12 second startup time, it hasn't been a problem turning the Scarlet on/off in between setups and making four batteries last through an 8 hour shoot.

I'll look into recording-time battery life in a bit and report back.

Anthony what kind of battery life are you getting out of that vmount?

What are you using, Michael? 130wh batteries? Sounds like it.

Trevor, so you may want to think about hanging your wireless follow focus reciver off the rails on the side of the camera or attach to the top plate on the side. Right now you have it right above the vents and that area can get hot and may cause you problems. Also, you are right in top of of the antennae area for the Redmote and again you may be killing your signal. I def notice a difference on my epic when I have that area obscured (with a metal) and when I don't. Just a heads up as you wait for scarlet and have some time to play with your confit.

I like how you mounted to monitor to the cheese stick on top of the OConnor O-Box. That is exactly the type of application we envisioned while working on the design!

How's that 504HD handling the weight?

I'm looking to get that...

Brandon, I have the 504HD and I love it with the Scarlet. It is only rated for 16lbs, and I was worried about how it would play with the Scarlet, but it has worked well so far. Mind you...I haven't loaded the rig completely yet, it's been a slimmed down config so far (Zeiss ZFs, 15mm LW, FF, short rods, VF Vmount plate and battery). On my next shoot, it will also carry a ki pro mini, a M-one motor, Bartech rx, and a mattebox. We'll see how that goes, but should be fine.

My guess is that the 504HD would hold up well until you get into big PL glass, 19mm rails and components, as everything starts getting much heavier.

Weighed mine this morning - Body + 50-150mm Red Zoom, + Vmount bat plate + 75wh Vmount bat, + Top handle, + 5" Touch LCD = 15.8 Lbs. Can't get much more stripped down than that; would def be over 17-18LBS once I add Mattebox & FF & even LW 15mm rails.

The 50-150 is big PL glass...if one is shooting with DSLR glass, it's staying under the 16lbs. But I see what you are saying, definitely pushing the envelope with 504HD, and it is limiting..which is never a good thing. I would lover to be on a Oconnor 1030, but it'll have to wait.

Was just trying to give you an idea of what the bare bones body would weigh with a PL zoom.
