I did forget to mention the Manfrotto 501 Head. It's a cheap head and not very fluid, but for dollying, it does the job.
Anthony - I'm going to have to buy a new tripod to handle the extra weight of the Scarlet/etc.

What would you buy today for a 'reasonably priced' (whatever that means?) head that could be used for dollying and other purposes?

And is that dolly always going on a flat surface like a table - or can they be used on a tripod (or some kind of super tripod able to support it)?

I ordered my Scarlet Dec 30th, but have very little knowledge about equipment, so I'm trying to come up with a game plan for some movement in my videos!

Thanks!!!

Just wondering what kind of Mount you have there, ?
Not the T. PL .

Simon,
This is the Canon Al mount with this lens attached
It is not a super clean piece of glass, but allows us to get super zoom shots that we use for some of our films. We shoot PL glass and Canon glass usually. The reason this is on the camera is we are testing it on the Scarlet. It covers(we built it for the 7D), just checking sharpness, aberration issues, etc. Again, this is one of our specialty lenses. If you need this type of shot affordably and portably this is a decent solution. It weighs about 4 lbs.

My camera is scheduled to arrive next week but the side handle is still on back order and i am looking to power up my camera. I like the rigs posted but would like to have my camera up and running. I see the different powering options people are using and would like to know if anyone has tried or used the Anton QRC-epic. Any info would be greatly appreciated before I order something.

Will post pics later.

The Manfrotto 501 is a very popular head because, for the money, it does a good job. For roughly $180USD, it's hard to beat. We have 4 or 5 of them. For panning, I won't use it. It's just not smooth enough. I have another fluid head I use. But for just sitting on a tripod, it's not bad.

If you want a better pan/tilt, the Manfrotto 504 is good.

My personal opinion, I think these tripod heads are great because of the low cost and return in value. They do the job you need them to do. There is a reason why Manfrotto sells so many of them.

If you have a bigger budget, I would go with the Sachtler 0407 FSB-6 Fluid Head. This is a great head for about $1300 USD.

The Midas Mount dolly system can go on a flat table, or be used with a tripod and C-Stands.
The Midas Mount video will give you an idea of what you can do with it.

I hope this helps.

Anthony - thanks for the detailed reply! Choosing a good head (I can only get one right now), will be important for me.

I have a 15" teleprompter, 5 fluorescent softboxes, boom mike & stand and an audio input box which should all work ok with the Scarlet. But, everything else - I've got to purchase - and must figure out what equipment to buy to get some motion in the studio, and also on-location?

Your RedRock shoulder mount looks very interesting as it could be used both in the studio (as you have used it), and on-location. Dual-use products really appeal to me, as the Scarlet ended up costing more than I had planned!

The devil is in the details when I start to think about it ... if I move the camera closer while shooting, how am I going to change to focus as I move? There are so many details I'm ignorant of - that are probably best learned on another forum. Do you have any recommendations for forums for learning to use equipment? Everyone here is Way farther down the learning curve than I am!

Thanks!!

I would like to know to. That evf mount looks nice!

Disagree. I found the movement to be decent but not great, and fluid drag to be wildly insufficient.

If you have a bigger budget, I would go with the Sachtler 0407 FSB-6 Fluid Head. This is a great head for about $1300 USD.

Disagree again. US/German made Oconnor/Sachtler were already overpriced. Now that they're both made in a single factory in Costa Rica, they're bordering on Arri/Sony levels of price-gouging. Seriously, Vitec is evil, don't support them.

Cartoni Focus HD supports twice the weight for $300 less and has an awesome movement.

I have the Cartoni Focus HD and am in love with it. It's very smooth.

Hi Michael, I currently own a Sachtler and am considering the Cartoni Focus HD for payload reasons. One thing I love about the Sachtler line is that you can set the drag to "0" can you do this with the focus HD? I mean at the "0" end of the continuous drag system is the head completely lose? Thanks, Adam

+10,000, Manfrotto fluid movement is miserable, they are not real heads. Unless you go with the $5,000, $10,000 O'Connor setup, Cartoni cannot be beat. Sachtler always felt too spring loaded to me.
