  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Please, help me decide what to do.

In all seriousness though, I'm 100% certain they will pay something eventually. It won't be what I billed them and I will very likely end up giving them a massive discount to get any money out of them, but it's still better than fighting it out in a court room and ending up with less money than I started with. One guy against a massive multinational; you know how it would end.

Because IF it's possible that they'll be able to pay your bills next year, you'd be off the hook: as far as i understand they would then be part of next year's bookkeeping/taxes, and you'd have a year to decide where to spend the dough?

Gunleik, if I told you I would never wander further than 10 meters from my front door with the RED ONE, would you still make the same recommendation?

I haven't decided on a head or a tripod yet. They would have to be something I can use with EPIC S35 as well, of course.

My suggestion is buy RED , go out and shoot , scarlet might be ready in 1 year...or maybe ready in 1 year and in your hands in 2 years...

Paul, I took another look at the used R1 you found. The kit he's selling contains way too much gear I have no desire to buy at this point, and quite a lot of stuff I probably wouldn't be able to use with EPIC S35. Oh well.
 
Petri, if you don't mind me asking, what are you planning on doing with the camera? You mentioned no commercial work, and not wandering more than 10 meters from your house. Is it just something you want to learn, you have a project you are shooting at home, you're a FX guy who wants to shoot plates, what is it that you plan to do with it? That makes it a lot easier to determine the kit. I can say this much, there are several levels of RED production.

1. Entry Level. People stepping up from HDV, DVCProHD, etc. Minimal kit purchase topping out at around $22K. They don't have all the bells and whistles but they'll get by and make it work for them.

2. Professional. People who have owned professional cameras in the past, will utilize as much gear they already own as much as possible, and their RED packages top out anywhere from $25K to $60K.

3. Cine/High End. These are the people that need all of the gadgetry needed to shoot movies, high end commercials, etc. They either own already or will buy the best follow focus, mattebox, monitors, tripods, lenses, etc. They will easily invest $60K+, with numbers going into the six figure category.

Obviously, there are grey areas in there as well. Not everyone fits into a nice, neat category but that's generally how it breaks down.

If you can provide information on what type of projects you'll be shooting I think you'll get some very good lists of what to buy, the essentials that will fit within your $30-$50K budget, and give you flexibility for the future.
 
My opinion is that you 'd better buy all accessories and then get paid twice the price of one (or two) scarlets. You'll be charged of 50% of the sum, which lets you just enough to buy your gear after.
Yes, you'll "loose" virtually some money, but there would be still enough for your scarlets !
And these would be yours, not your compay's. Later, if you have some more money to spend, your company buys your scarlets (thanx to the bill)... you get some money back and your company gets scarlets...?Oo ^^

i really don't know much about it, but i'm pretty sure a gift is defined in the U.S. tax code as a gratuitus transfer where the donor does not recieve anything in return for their gift. if they do recieve anything in return - it's value is deducted from the gift. if they recieve the exact same valued amount in assets back - it does not count. if they claim it does... i'm pretty sure that's the illegal activity we're talking about. also i think there's about a 10,000 dollar limit on the nontaxable gift anyways.

there, may however be a loophole with children and spouses...
 
Even children aren't a loophole. The $10,000 per year gift limit still applies, though I think it's $11,000 now.

When I got to Australia I was delighted to find that there is NO gift tax, and even more impressive, NO death tax! You can give someone $1000,000 in cash if you want and no inheritance taxes.

There are capital gains taxes, but that's it.

Hi Steve, and thanks for posting. No, I don't mind anyone asking.

The not wandering more than 10 meters from my house referred to me buying the R1 for a learning tool to 'play' with until I can trade it in for EPIC S35. The R1 will allow me to learn the workflow and to understand how things happen with a RED product. I wish to avoid buying any accessories that aren't compatible with the EPIC.
 
buy a great editing system with a ROCKET and a good tripod and you've already spent about half of it.

buy a good light kit, buy a good audio set-up, bam there goes another $10K...

I can easily spend $50K without ever touching the camera...

buy the RPPs and sell them minus the VAT/duty/shipping in your country, and you'll still do much better than by forking it over in income taxes...

there are legal ways...

i'd love to have this "problem"!!
 
Depends on the type of company, but I think he cannot sell these items bought as company gear. Or with severe loss.

My opinion is still buy accessories and get payment from your company (price of the cam x2) sothat you get enough money to buy the cam later as an individual, AND THEN, sell it to your company(and get money back as individual). Think about it ! I bet this would be a great solution !
