  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Playback for EPIC...

Playback is critical. We understand that. We will provide it. Just need a bit more time.

Jim

Playback has proven to be exceptionally difficult. More than you could imagine. We are late. Something we were trying never to be anymore...

This is much more difficult a trick than anyone had expected, but we did have a breakthrough over the weekend. No one wants this to be delivered more than we do.

While I can't offer a date at this point, I know we are "sooner rather than later".

We understand the frustration about this because we share it. The complexity of the code surrounding the single most comprehensive and complicated camera ever made has made this quite a challenge. The only thing I can say is that it will get done. The RED Army is focused on it.

Please be patient. It won't be much longer...

Jim

RED WILL DO...

No Worries...

I know I have been the nosiest on the forum about playback... (sorry) and told off for it... and stopped. :)))

But I have to say. I can and will wait for it as long as it takes... I'd rather it non gliche and stable so If I have to wait a few more months for that... then so be it. I'll be very happy.

My only request is that playback is as simple as a one button toggle play, rewind, fwd, stop... Same as the RED ONE. Pleeeeease.

Thanks in advance Jim & RED team.

PS. They camera surpasses my expectations anyway... so Im very happy anyway.

Thanks for the update Jim! Can't wait to have playback!

Thanks for the update! And thanks for the incredibly generous stage offers, our Epic stage 2 is soon on it´s way home to join our Epic-M and our R1s, we are thrilled!

Mr. Jannard,
Do you mean playing back footage in camera?
This hasn't been available up until now?

I always thought that the camera than can record the footage, can also play it back.
But logically, with 5K and 4K footage, it does seem to require a really fast processor.

Hi eric, not to speak for Jim, but playback is all about the RED ROCKET which is the $4750 USD graphic accelerator card.

Now imagine needing that functionality and processing power in a matchbox.

tough stuf indeed. Cool on the breaktrhough. these updates are awesome and extremely appreciated.

no disrespect but I LOVE when Jim says " we are no longer talking etc etc" Because then he posts more than ever. THAT is what
makes RED awesome... they can't help but talk about how fun it is for things in the Red laboratories.

Meantime, shooting on multiple 64GB cards is a nice interim solution - especially if you have a RED ROCKET and a calibrated monitor on set

I thought this could have been one of those things that just got ported from the RED One. Does it have to do with QT? Or is it just having to generate the higher quality signal? Instead if the 720 8-bit RED One.

In any case I'm sure it will get figured out. Thanks for letting folks know where you are at.

The EPIC isn't supposed to replace Handicams- it's supposed to replace 35mm film. And with film, I'm not used to seeing what was shot for at least 12 hours anyway. The ability to watch EPIC footage at the DIT station mere minutes after "cut" is called is much quicker feedback than would ever be possible on a 35mm shoot.

If EPIC adds the ability to playback in camera, well that's just icing on the cake. For the first 100+ years of film production that was never even a possibility to wish for.

As far as I know, there is no playback function on an Arri 535 yet... So your not _that_ late. :001_tongue:

Thanks Jim, that would be a welcome update, But we've managed more than fine until now.

Anyway, Red Rocks!

THink commercials. It's all about playback with commercials.

Drama, TV, less so. But I get your point.

It's the same with Monitors.

I was watching HEARTS of DARKENESS the other day and what struck me was the relationship that FFC and vittorio storaro had to have during that filming. He wasn't hiding in a tent watching a monitor, he was active in the middle of this crazy set, and not able to see a roll for a week, with millions of dollars of his own money on the line.

Those human interactions between artists (director and cinematographer, et all) are the stuff of movies. Imagine the degree of trust FFC needed to have. Enough to look over after a take and say, "did we get it?" that's it, without seing it.

Playback is a nice thing, but classic films were made with a system of artists working together. Maybe there is not much time for that anymore in this "digital world" but an aesthetic does get lost and an attitude changes when the tools are overused, it changes set dynamics.

I would never advocate giving up playback because that would be stupid, but just notices how people and sets change when it's all about playback.
